It didn’t save me, but a mess up helped me save someone else.I do consultancy work from time to time and one of the smaller cultural tourism businesses I worked with was attempting to raise capital for future investment. They’d received a set of grant request application paperwork but due to the tight timeframes and a total mess up in the office, the paperwork wasn’t done and they missed the cut off for applications. They emailed the organisation that had sent it to them and requested an extension and were absolutely delighted to receive one.They contacted me for assistance and frantically sent the paperwork over so I started the process of compiling the needed documents and completing the application forms. But as I continued…I had some reservations.The documents seemed a bit… amateurish and included spelling errors and other minor inconsistencies. The further I got, the more questions were raised. It was a scam.I immediately placed a call to the office to explain the situation. They were embarrassed that they hadn’t picked it up and were also new to grant requests and thus hadn’t known that legitimate grant organisations don’t charge fees for applications.Their f*ck up in the office meant that the fraudulent paperwork landed on the desk of someone who could recognize it for what it was.
