PDF Editor FAQ

My wife and I have taken in many parrots over the years. Can you tell us more about your rescue/rehab? We love parrots and my wife in particular has a gift for communicating with them.

Now, I don’t have, nor volunteer (wish I could, but have non near me) a rescue. The nearest one I have is the Tri-State Bird Rescue. They treat mostly treat wild birds. Still cool though.

Who keeps putting tiny hats on pigeons in Las Vegas, and does it hurt the pigeons?

We don't have an answer for that yet. The bird rescue organization said they have a couple leads but did not disclose anything. Dr. Charles Walcott, who has been studying pigeons for 30 years, gave his educated opinion by stating that the birds are in no great harm. Their vision isn't compromised by the hats and their behavior shows that they are unperturbed by them. Although the hats will eventually fall off, the bird rescue organization is trying to capture them to remove the hats. In the meantime, they are causing quite a stir and the community has given names to them. The pigeon with the red hat is Cluck Norris and the pink hat is Coolamity Jane. People have said there is a third one with a brown hat, however that has not been confirmed.

How was the state bird of Utah chosen?

This is a great story:It was May, 1848, and the very first Mormon pioneers had arrived in the Salt Lake Valley the previous summer.(Image: Utah.gov)All was going well, but their future survival, and that of more emigrants that were on their way, depended on their coming harvest, which would be the settlers first real crop since entering the valley. That too, seemed to be going reasonably well. It seemed that the Saints would thrive in their new wilderness home. And then…(Image: Wikipedia)Swarms of “crickets” (actually a slightly different species) descended, seemingly from out of nowhere, on the Mormons’ crops. The settlers knew that this was a serious problem, and began to take steps to fight the insects. However, nothing seemed to work. There were simply too many crickets.Settlers tried everything they could think of. One particularly clever pair tried stretching a rope across their field, one man holding each end, and running the length of the field, the stretched rope hitting the stalks of grain as it passed over the field, knocking the crickets off. Up and down the field they went, the stalks having new crickets on them by the time the rope reached them again. Of course, one can only stay outside knocking crickets off their grain for so long, so this, while ingenious, also proved ineffective. For something approaching two weeks, the crickets raged on, eating and eating. The Saints were frightened. As far from civilization as they were, crop failure would mean mass starvation, and the new colony would come a quick end. It seemed like a lost cause. For what approached two weeks, this went on. All the Saints could do now is pray. And then….From what also seemed to be from nowhere, thousands of seagulls descended on the crickets and began to eat them. They ate their fill, would take drinks, (some stories say to vomit) and then would return to the fields to eat some more.“All day long they gorged themselves, and when full, disgorged and feasted again, the white gulls upon the black crickets, list hosts of heaven and hell contending, until the pests were vanquished and the people were saved." -Orson F WhitneyFor another two weeks, chaos was returned to order as the crickets were devoured by these birds, in what could only have been seen by the Mormons as an act of Divine Providence. The settlers had been rescued. In 1955, when it came time for the Utah State Legislature to select the state bird, there wasn’t much controversy. Only one choice would do.Seagull monument in Salt Lake City. Erected, 1913

I was relieved that non-technical people receiving the documents to sign had no trouble at all with it. The documents are returned promptly. It is great having the option to notify non-signers when a document is signed.
