Stanford does not have a SymySys Department and the classes for the major are spread out among the CS, Phil, Psych, and Linguistics departments.Indeed, be aware that the classes are taught independently (besides SymSys 100, and a few other ones), so it is true that the courses throughout the major might not all “tie up” together. Nonetheless, if a student plans ahead, and explores around a bit before settling on a program of study, they can design a very cohesive program with classes that, despite offered by multiple departments, still cover connected and mutually relevant content. There is a LOT of flexibility on the SymSys program, so there is room to shift the program towards whatever area you are most interested in. I would suggest you figuring out which specific area within SymSys you are most attracted to during your first year, finding a professor in this area, and talking to them about any potential classes that might be relevant. Also, don’t forget to talk with upperclassmen in the major and major advisors (most major have some kind of professional or student-based advising system/sections) in order to get more major specific advice.Within each Department, there exist certain classes that are more limited to this specific field of study, as well as other ones which approach topics from the perspective of multiple fields (usually cross-listed classes, or ones with faculty from different departments). So, if you are looking for a more internally interdisciplinary class approach, look for the cross listed courses on Explore Courses.Finally, don’t forget to check the CS+X program (X = Linguistics, Phil, or ANY OTHER HUMANITIES DISCIPLINE!). The IISER TVM campus, part of the Western Ghats mountain ecosystem, is arguably one of the most picturesque Indian campuses. Spanning about 200 acres, it is located at Vithura, ca. 40 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, at the foothills of the Agasthyamalai hills. It includes a substantial tract of rainforest that is contiguous with the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. Just don’t come here if you only enjoy city life, as the nearby town is 17km far. The major challenges that the world faces today, namely, climate change, food security, healthcare, sustenance, etc., are too complex to be solved by biologists, chemists and physicists independently. The i2 Sc programme includes 5 different streams, each based on a core discipline and associated thematic areas.
