NYU Shanghai is not simply a branding of Chinese university. It is the third portal campus of NYU.The university takes care of their students just like what most American universities do. For international students, most of them (98% for my class) will have a native Chinese speaker as a roommate. They are also required to take a Chinese language course for four semesters (they can take placement test to take more advanced courses if they want). The department of Student Life provides a lot of activities to help students integrate in Shanghai and China while the department of Health & Wellness have certified physicians and psychological consultants. The department of Career Development offers a lot of professional training and opportunities, including workshops, seminars, internship fairs, mentor programs, etc.For academics, as this university is still very young, most faculty are just visiting here while the school is trying to hire more tenure-track faculty. Most faculty are from American Universities and the university leadership generally have a very strong background and connection in the academics. Vice Chancellor Lehman once served as the dean of the University of Michigan Law School and the president of Cornell University. Provost Cohen is the Julius Silver Professor of History at NYU and once served as the head of history department at NYU. Associate Vice Chancellor Wang is Global Professor of Neural Science, Adjunct Professor of Physics and Mathematics, and co-director of the Swartz Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at New York University. Dean Ross is Leonard J. Shustek Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at NYU and he is both an ACM Fellow and IEEE Fellow. Dean Chen is the Distinguished Global Professor of Business at NYU Shanghai and once served as the Polk Brothers Professor in Retailing and Professor of Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Associate Provost Lin is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Therefore, you will have a relatively close relationship with professors and might have some research opportunities. Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund funds students who would like to do some research during the summer break and eight research institutes provide research opportunities to students and faculty.
