Oh my gosh, has it changed! That is, at least from the very small program I played in sixty years ago!Two of the main and very visible things that have changed has been the golf season and the mode of competition. When I was a collegiate golfer, golf season was spring semester. It was great for me, in the fall, I took heavier class loads so that I could take a lighter load during golf season in the spring term. Now it is year round.But one of the main differences is that nearly all of the competitions we played in were just one college playing against another (just like in every other college sport) - and the competitions were all match play. That is, each of the six players from one team would play the players from the other team in match play. Each foursome would be two players from each team, with two individual matches and one best-ball match in each of three foursomes. Now all collegiate golf competition is in multiple-college tournaments - usually three rounds of tournament play - and all of it is stroke play (of course) with the team score being the aggravate of the individual scores (maybe four of the five scores each day). We played one or two tournaments as well, but the main thing for us were the match play competitions with one other team.Scholarships? What were they? Oh - some programs probably offered some scholarships, I don’t know. Our program was made up of players who were at the university to major in what they wanted to become - and still had time to play golf during the spring term. And low key? Our coach would suggest that we should probably try to practice a bit in between matches. When I had the time, I would go out on the soccer fields and hit balls.Although I’m not technically involved, I am one of the old guys that hangs out at my local course a lot, know the golf coaches, and have gotten to know most of the players from my university’s men’s and women’s teams. ‘My’ county course is also their practice facility (in addition to all of the practice facilities, fitness rooms, etc., that they have on campus) There are three practice holes at my course that are designated as their practice holes - in addition to the practice range any of us can use. Most of the players are on some kind of scholarship - and, of course, get golf equipment through the team as well. It is still a small program compared to most of the universities they compete against. But it is a huge deal compared to what I saw as a golf team member. Watching those players, both men and women, hit golf balls is amazing. Our driving range is only about 300 yards long - so the guys are hitting “limited flight” range balls into the creek at the end of the range. I’ve been on the range next to one of the women golfers who was hitting her hybrid well beyond my driver.Yes. College golf has changed.
