I have completely rewritten this answer, considering it was written early during my freshman year, when I finally became active on Quora. Upon further reflection, I decided that this answer could not be salvaged, like most things from freshman year.I have cystic fibrosis. I was diagnosed quite late for a patient, as many are diagnosed at birth. I did not have any of the usual markers for CF; failure to thrive, meconium ileus at birth, intestinal blockages, small in stature, etc. In effect, I was a healthy 2 1/2 year old that had a bit of a toddler tummy, was allergic to chocolate (both of these were due to pancreatic insuffiency) ,and got colds a lot. My dad's friend, a pediatric cardiologist in San Diego, thought that I should be tested for CF given my symptoms. My pediatrician was incredulous at this accusation, and she only agreed to the test to rule it out. Cystic fibrosis is diagnosed using a sweat chloride test. Regular results for a sweat chloride test are about 10-35 mmols/L. According to my mother, my sweat test was 109 mmols/L. My pediatrician was sure that this was a mistake, and ordered another one right away. High again.At this point, she conceded that I had cystic fibrosis and directed us to Children's Medical Center in downtown Dallas, about 45 minutes away from my house, not including traffic.The early years were good. I did my treatments, came in for a couple "tune-ups" in the hospital over the years, but it really didn't affect my life that much. I still did everything everyone else did, and I swam competitively, because swimming is great for lung health. After this phase, I played volleyball, both school and club.I was about 13 at the point where my health became more difficult to maintain. I cultured Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or its more commonly known name, MRSA, in my lungs. Due to a lack of beds on the pulmonary floor, I was brought to B4, one of the oldest and most unkempt areas of the hospital. The next culture brought up MRSA. This is not a staph infection I can get rid of with antibiotics. Cystic fibrosis patients culture many types of bacteria in their lungs, and it is only transmissible to normal people if a strange chain of events happens in sequence. But we can transmit infections to each other, through a cough, or just breathing too close.For me, this bacteria has caused more frequent lung infections, especially during cold weather. Since January 2014, I have been hospitalized six times, which is more than the stays from the first half of my life combined. Some of these have been more random, such as a random GI inflammation, or most recently, an exacerbation related to volcanic ash, after I visited Costa Rica and a volcano erupted. (!) You can't really control those kind of things. Currently, (4/20/2015) I am hospitalized for just a regular ol' pulmonary exacerbation. My lung capacity was at 43% when I came in, and it is normally around 70%. They did a bronchoscopy to see why I've been having so many problems ( 3 hospitalizations in 2015!) and to clear some of the excess mucus out. We are still awaiting results.It is true that it can be very difficult to cope with CF. Since we can't be actual in-person friends, we're internet friends, and when someone passes, the whole group mourns. It's especially difficult for me when someone close to my own age passes, because it makes me think of my own mortality. During these times, I rely on my family and faith for support. We are always praying for a cure and believing that God can do all things.There are some medical advancements being made, most notably, the Kalydeco. Kalydeco is a drug that is perfect for the 4% of people with the G551D mutation, which is primarily a gating mutation. I, along with 70% of the CF population, have the DDF508 mutation. I am currently in a study for Kalydeco-Vertex 809, a drug that combines two medications in hope of actually altering the DNA. I have been on this medication since September 2013, and have seen less-than-stellar results. Still, Vertex Pharmaceuticals is pushing for FDA approval this summer, and they are likely to get it, as people have said they have been able to gain weight easier, which has never been a real problem for me. Other more promising studies are around the corner, but until then, the lung transplant is the only true life-extender, so to speak. These are not a cure, even so. A person who gets a lung transplant will be on anti-rejection meds for the rest of their life, and 50% get rejection anyway. It’s not a good way to die.I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. It’s a lot of pain, both mentally and physically, and its really hard to make up this much school, especially in junior year! But if I didn't have CF, I would be scared of needles and think hospitals were scary, and I very likely would not be considering a healthcare career as a PA. I don’t like the path I’ve had to endure, but its gotten me to where I am today.
