PDF Editor FAQ

Can an owner of an AR15 tell me one good thing they ever accomplished with their rifle?

Edit 1/15/19Thank you to Susan M Wellman for her extensive edits - this was originally written on smartphone and needed some refinement with regard to spelling/autocorrect/mistake/typo correction. Also, Comments have been disabled due to irrelevance and pedantry.August of 2012- 2:05amIt was a warm and breezy night; the weekend was upon us and the city of San Antonio had finally cooled off a bit from the oppressive heat of a typical south Texas sunmer’s day. The temperature has reached nearly 106 that day, and the 82 degree, breezy weather was a welcome break from the day’s heat.I’d had a history of snoring and driving my (now ex) wife crazy. As such, I was in bed in the guest bedroom of our 2 story house (3br/2.5 bath). The guest bedroom is directly above the front door. Our neighborhood was mostly young families and/or retirees, in a upper middle class, nice part of town. As such, it was a very quiet place to live in suburban San Antonio. We knew all our neighbors except for one house where three young men from Mexico (which I knew based on their vehicle tags) were living as roommates. I assumed them to be college students from the nearby university. They dressed well and drove nice cars. This wasn’t unusual in San Antonio for Mexican Nationals to send their kids to college in Texas. It’s a mere 2 or 3 hour drive to the closest part of the Mexican border. At about 2:05 am I heard a car door shutting outside the window and thought little of it aside from dismissing it as being “probably my neighbors parking” in the side of the street /in front of their house. Then I heard hushed whispering and decided to investigate. Not long after I heard the doorknob being quietly tested to see if it was unlocked. On this evening the full moon shed an unusual amount of light onto my driveway; so much in fact that it probably saved my life - For I peered out the window and was able to see four men, two of whom I could immediately see were armed; one with a pistol and a rifle respectively. A third man was also armed with a small revolver tucked into his waistband, but was not wielding it at the time I saw themI bolted to the master bed room to fetch my shotgun, which I typically keep ready and loaded with #4 buckshot for home defense which is generally a deadly, yet less structurally penetrative choice of ammunition; for the safety of neighbors and those nearby) As I got to my gun safe, I quickly remembered Id taken my shotgun out shooting recently and had left the home defense ammo in my range bag. Instead, I grabbed an AR15 style rifle (Colt M4LE carbine). This the next most sensible choice for home defense out of the rest of my available firearms, albeit a very loud one…As I came out, and to the top of the stairs which overlook the front door entry way, The door flung open after theee hard kicks from the intruders.I immediately fired at the first armed man who was attempting to lead the quartets entry into the house, striking him twice in the shoulder and arm (he was facing sideways in relation to me). He fell back through the door and into the iron bannister railing and took a short tumble down the porch’s steep concrete steps. Upon hearing the shots ring out immediately upon their attempted entry, the other three immediately turned and ran. Although he was wearing a balaclava style mask, I could see expression of disbelief and shock in one’s of the uninjured sssailants eyes, likely from a combination of the commotion of the shots and his friend’s subsequent tumble down the stairs . Aside from the screams of pain from the man who was shot, they spoke not a word to each other, and yet they all three (seemingly simultaneously) turned tail and retreated to their vehicle as quickly as their respective physicalaties would allow.During their hasty retreat, one of the two with a pistol wildly and inaccurately fired three or four shots in my (perceived) direction; all of which struck my porch ceiling or the front of the house. After his shots had stopped, I charged down the house stairs and could see that they were climbing into their vehicle. Before I arrived at the front doorway/porch area, I was surprised to see the man who’d been shot scurrying to his feet and sprinting to join his co-assailents in their retreat. I considered momentarily firing at him, into their car, or shooting out their tires, but decided against these options as no more shots were being fired and I didn’t want to put any other nearby people in further danger. My wife called police, who had a unit in the area and were able to apprehend the suspects. The man who was shot was airlifted to the hospital - one of the bullets passed into and through his bicep and lodged into one of his lungs, which had collapsed and was filling up with blood . After my report was collected by the officers, my actions were deemed justified. Later on the following morning one of the responding detectives was kind enough to let me know that the man’s condition had been stabilied and he was going to survive. I was actually relieved, I don’t want to ever have to live with taking someone’s life regardless of whether or not it was justified. In addition, I was also later informed that the men connected with another nearby home invasion a few weeks prior, wherein three of their victims were killed, one of whom was 12 year old girl. In that particular previous invasion, the crime was drug related (the owner of the property was a dealer).I was then informed that they had clearly mistaken my house for the house where the three afore mentioned young men were living. It turned out they too were dealing drugs. Never would’ve guessed. Their house was subsequently SWAT’d as well and their inventory was seized. All this time, all this crime had been two doors down from where my then 3 year old son played outside. As for the four men, they were all tried for the murders in the previous invasion, as well as the charges for the attempted invasion of my property, probation violations, weapons charges (felon possessors, and a whole host of other charges) they were connected with a large local gang who I’ll not mention here. One (who admitted to killing the 12 yr old) will face execution. The other three, who all took plea bargains to avoid death row, will never see the light of a free day outside prison for the rest of their livesSo, that’s my story. Had I not had my rifle to nip this situation in the bud, who knows what might have happened. But, regardless whether or not I “needed” my rifle, or any other gun for that matter, no one else should have to justify their right to have one either as per the constitution.Understand this: the second amendment wasn’t out into place so we could have hunting rifles. It is, and always has been an insurance policy against dictatorship, tyranny and/or self defense - in that exact order. It’s the most important check and balance of our society, whether you want to believe it or not. I can’t think of one single mass shooting that didn’t have one of the following factors at play long before the question of how they got the gun and what type it was:- negligence of police/authorities/parents to act on tell tale signs that the shooter was mentally unsound and dangerous- a clearly disturbed person on SSRI drugs as the assailant, who’s mental health history had been suppressed (which would’ve prevented their access to any such firearm had it not been suppressed-terrorism/extremist behavior that should’ve been spotted long ago.
