Warning: You will cringe!On one morning, I met my six year old cousin in a closet. I am a girl, and he is a boy.I don't know the details, but the story ended up with pants on the floor.No, we did not do “that!” We were six, for heaven’s sake!We walked around, pants off, underwear off, in a circle around the closet.We did this every day, inspecting each other’s privates with great curiosity.It was definitely an… interesting experience.

My first clue, was when I pushed on the door and met with resistance.When I finally got the door open I was met with a very sheepish looking sheep dog, who was the first one through the door.Next came Big Mama, our 300 pound pet pig and her companion, a small rescue pig we called Einstein ( on account of his being brain damaged during a cull).It seems that when I was away, they somehow managed to open the porch door, which closed behind them, and had spent a good part of the day inspecting the house and pushing up the carpet.The garbage can was overturned, and I vividly recall there were coffee grounds and egg shells all over the floor.They also knocked a stack of records off a table and tore down a clothes line, damaging a dress that my daughter had saved up for with her babysitting money. She was heartbroken.As if that wasn't bad enough, somehow a hen had also joined the party and was perched in the window sill.Good times.

I do, it was me! A local general contractor had been audited by its insurance company and had been literally given a 3 inch binder full of safety violations. I was hired by the owner to fix the problems.Now my first clue should have been when the owner told me that I would have a problem with the supervisor in his cabinet shop who refused to install and use guards on the tables saw. Wait a minute, the employee is getting away with basically telling the owner to “F*** off!So I went about my first day inspecting the various jobsites. I would first introduce myself to the job supervisors, foremen, and crew and inform them what I would be doing, and why. At the end of each inspection I would notify the supervisors what I had found and make suggestions on how to improve safety.The next morning I was in front of the owner and grilled on why I was out in the field. I had the binder in my hand and showed him why I was hired. He basically informed me that I was to stay in the office.Anyway, after a week of inspections my report to him showed that PPE was not worn when required. Hardhats, safety glasses, proper boots and gloves were not required. The cabinet shop supervisor refused to even to discuss machine guarding. Oxygen and acetylene tanks were observed by me being hoisted by the crane hook inserted into the caps. Gasoline, O2, acetylene and other flammables were being improperly stored inside the cabinet shop building, and the list went on and on. I even witnessed two men standing on a 2x12 board that was on top of the top rail of a scissor-lift work platform about 20 feet off the ground. When I told the guys to lower the platform down (IDLH), the supervisor was immediately on the phone complaining to the owner that I was impeding productionAfter reading the report and my suggestions on how to comply with safety and address the findings by the insurance company, I was fired for being “too aggressive”.
