PDF Editor FAQ
What is life like for a well educated person in prison? Can they get respect by knowing the law, or teaching other inmates?
With three degrees, a Bachelor’s, Master’s, Ed. S., and ABD for a Doctorate due to being incarcerated during my dissertation studies, from my experience inmates with formal education can be looked down upon by other inmates. In the institution I was in, majority of the population had a diploma, GED, or was working toward a GED from a program on the inside. A few inmates were college educated. But if one, stated their higher education status, you were an outsider. It was automatically interpreted as you thinking you’re better than everyone else. Some college educated inmates resorted to becoming commissary…. they would share their commissary to keep friends. Then the goal of the other inmates became to prove how the educated were nothing on the inside. They would pick on educated inmates, do manipulate things to show them that although you might have book sense, you had no street creds or inmates creds for that matter. Coincidentally, that was also the same case when dealing with COs and the counselor.Given that my resume and experience exceeded theirs by far, the counselor initially pinned me as a know it all. Why? Because I told her there must be other forms of punishment or enforcing consequences than placing inmates on lockdown for 30 or more days just when they didn’t agree with her on an issue. I told her from my observations her tactics were awful and something should be done. Well, that didn’t bid well with her. I wasn’t placed on lockdown for expressing myself but I did get the shunned treatment and she passed it on to COs. It took me months to build a trusting and differently viewed relationship with the COs. By the time I was released, I was an inmate they trusted to help others, one they came to for advice. The COs would tell the counselor they weren’t listening to anyone except me.But it took months to get there. And for a second, just a split second, during the horrid phase, I was actually ashamed of my degrees. Then reality came back again. So although the institution did not formerly use me, I put my skills to work on my own.I wrote letters for inmates as drafts when they had in-house grievances or needed to complete a request form. I drafted and edited letters of inmates to judges. I did the same with forms and documents for inmates to attorneys or for legal purposes. I also tutored inmates on the block with the work they brought back from their GED classes. I came to be highly respected for my education yes but mainly because inmates knew they could come to me for help. I didn’t ask for anything in return. Being of use was good enough for me.It is my belief that although they do not always, all institutions should utilize the skills of their inmates. It would be a wise and helpful option.
What was the best revenge you've ever gotten?
More than 30 years ago I was employed as a manager of a small funeral home in Chicago for an absentee owner. I inherited over $250,000 in receivables which had never been collected. I decided I was going to collect on as many of the as I could. I started sending letters, and then a letter from my attorney asking for payment. By that point most of the debtors came forward and payed what they owed or set up a payment plan. Because of their ‘good faith’ effort I would waive any finance fees or attorney’s fees and court costs. I was a good guy, I just wanted what was owed me.Now, this was a business which served an Eastern European immigrant community where a flashy funeral for your aged mother was a status symbol. One gentleman wracked up a funeral bill of over $11,000 for his mother who lived in an area of Chicago which was once run down with old dilapidated brownstone houses on the “boulevards” in Chicago, which 20 years later were to become the “it” thing in real estate and development. Now, in the ‘80’s $11,000 was quite a chunk of change, and after paying the $2,500 deposit requested refused to pay the remainder of the balance, just over $8,500 and change. The contract he signed stipulated 18% per annum ‘late payment’ fees for any outstanding balance, compounded. I wrote the requisite letters requesting payment, then had the attorney send a letter requesting payment. After no response a lawsuit was filed and a judgement entered against him in absentia. During the proceedings I had a lien placed on his mother’s house, which he maintained.Flash forward 15 years and the real estate market in this area of Chicago went through the roof and it was time for him to sell the house. But, he couldn’t because of the lien. By that time $8,500 and change with compounded interest and attorney’s fees along with court costs topped $30,000. This guy tried to negotiate a settlement for the debt so that the lien would be released. I would not relent, this guy felt entitled to negotiate. This went on for another 12+ months, all the time accruing interest and fees. Finally, we met in court. I would still not relent while the balance was approaching the $40,000 mark. My attorney presented all of our requests for payment over the years, the judge considered everything and entered his judgement; for the lien to be released the man would have to pay what he owed, including interest, attorney’s fees, and court costs. A debt which started out as $8,500 and change now cost him nearly $40,000 and I could not have been happier. The Jaguar I bought with that money was well worth it.
What is personal loan closure?
A personal loan can be an immediate help for an urgent need. However, a personal loan generally comes with a high rate of interest as it’s an unsecured loan.It should be your top priority to close the loan else it can increase your debt burden. Closing a personal loan does not mean to stop paying off the amount you borrowed. You need to follow certain procedures for a proper closure. Here are few steps to close any personal loan:1. Visit bank with the complete set of documents (as mentioned above).2. You may be required to fill a form or write a letter requesting pre-closure of the personal loan account.3. Pay the pre-closure amount.4. Sign the required documents, if any.5. Take acknowledgment of the balance amount you have paid.6. Since a personal loan is generally unsecured, there is no asset that needs to be released from lien or hypothecation.7. Your personal loan will close automatically once the funds are received by the bank.8. The bank will dispatch a loan closing document that you need to keep safe.I suggest you should check out this link to know out more about personal loans and how to close a personal loans: https://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/learning-center/borrow/how-to-close-a-personal-loan
