My grandparents are married for 65 years now.Granny has weak legs, and Grandpa chokes food. Even if her whole body tremors, she walks up to the kitchen when grandpa’s home. Sits next to him with water in her hands while he’s eating. She doesn’t want anybody to do that except her.Then, he holds her hand supporting her steps to bed.Every time he chokes, she rushes in her weak legs. “ You’ve to be careful, I won’t always be there to get you water.” - She says.Every time she falls, he rushes to her. Convince your brother/sister that even after marriage he/she can sleep next to you with his/her legs over your chest7. Convince your mother-in-law/father-in-law that you are not a terrorist8. Convince the 'society' that I cannot make sure that she is from the same religion/caste as mine before falling for her (not necessarily)9. Convince your girl/guy that this is gonna take some pain yet will definitely be worth it10. I married a young woman that had been divorced about a year, with 2 small children. And we immediately became an old married couple, comfortable with each other. As in soaking in the bathtub together, with me reading a book to her. We had two more children together. When I was recalled to active duty with the Army, and was traveling a lot, she raised our children, and loved me when I did get home. When I had orthopedic surgery on an ankle, she nursed me. When she wanted to learn to drive a 4 speed, I coached her- and she did. We went camping, fishing, and gardened together. So how did our marriage end? In as cruel a way as possible.We found my wife had a genetic disease, called Huntington’s Disease. It gradually destroys your central nervous system, and eventually will kill you. No cure, very little treatment. Over a period of years, my wife lost her ability to drive, to walk, to stand, to talk. I will feed her, bathe her, rub her back, bring her flowers. Somewhere in there, she left me. She no longer knows me- I’m the person that gives her a bath, changes her bed, feeds her ice cream. Her heart still beats, she still breathes- but the person is gone. She can’t cry for me- and I dare not cry for her, or I might not stop. And I still love her.Edit- and last night, I brushed her hair for the final time. She quietly passed away in her sleep, while I was holding her hand.
