I once helped a friend fit a new radiator hose on his Mini. After we’d cleaned up and tried to set off for a test drive, the car would not move forwards or backwards. He put the car in neutral, got out, and we tried pushing it forwards and backwards. It still wouldn’t move.After a few minutes thought, we decided to jack up each wheel in turn to see if it would turn. We started with the front nearside and worked our way round to the front offside. All the others turned forwards and backwards, but this one would only rock an inch or so either way.We thought something major must have happened with the gearbox or something else really bad and expensive. (We were only teenagers and this was one of the early BMC? minis).We lifted the bonnet, hoping for inspiration, and peered into the depths while gently rocking the car back and forth. We could hear a faint clonking coming from somewhere near the inside of the front offside wheel, and there it was.The pliers we used to tighten the jubilee clip on the radiator hose, and had left on a shelf at the back of the engine compartment, had fallen down, handles first, and one handle had gone through the gap in the centre of the universal joint on the drive shaft. As the shaft tried to turn, the handle pressed against the bulkhead.The moral of the story? When finished working under the bonnet, don’t close it until you have accounted for every nut/bolt/tool/piece of rag, etc.
