How do sniffing salts work?
Very, very well.I was sitting at the nurses station at Redland Middle School one day circa 1982 because I’d had another Serious Asthma Attack during PE and the teacher sent me and my blue face in for my rescue inhaler. Pretty standard, really. While waiting, I noticed, sitting on the floor under the first aid station, a little cylinder wrapped in gauze. About 1/2 the size of a chapstick, the side read: “Ammonia inhalant. Use once and destroy”“I think this is a smelling salt!” I thought, loudly, and pocketed it.There was a dot in the middle surrounded by arrows and the succinct instructions: “crush here”. It might as well have been a wet paint sign. I couldnt possibly resist. I popped it and…WOW! It smells like window cleaner times a million. I felt like that pungent odor burned all the way through my skull In at least six different directions. That smell could wake the dead!I think you’d have to smell pure ammonia to really respect how strong it is. You could take Vicks vapo-rub, the strongest wasabi, and the strongest solvent you know, mix them together and not even be in the same ballpark.
What are the hidden gems in Redlands, CA?
There are two different parks with hiking trails, Oakmont and Caroline Park, that are pretty. You can also mountain bike and horsebackride on them (Oakmont is for horses). There's also Prospect Park where you can hike, which has a huge Orange Grove and the Kimberly Crest mansion, donated as a museum. There are two Farmer's markets: a big one on Thursday night, with excellent food booths, pony rides and a bounce house for kids. Also a small one Saturday morning at the Grove Montessori charter farm Middle school. The kids have activities set up for other kids to do, like make crafts. They also sell their own vegetables they grow and bread they bake. They have goats and chickens you can visit, and there's a new park being built next door. There are a few other vendors there selling excellent local produce.Off Brookside avenue is Jacinto farmstand. I love their produce. It's locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables (not organic though). Excellent broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, strawberries, dried chiles, summer fruit, local eggs, avocados and citrus.Another cool thing about redlands in the winter are little stands in front of people's houses where you leave money and take away bags of citrus or avocadoes from their trees. Delicious and cheap! If you have young kids MIR, Montessori in Redlands, is a good school to send them if you can afford it ($1,000 a month). And as previously mentioned there's a Montessori charter public middle school also (free). The public library, Smiley library, is a beautiful historic building and has events for kids like storytime. It also has this fascinating “Lincoln Shrine” on site with Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and knowledgeable docents on site. Also for kids is the Sportball program, classes they can take at local park.Brookside park, my son's favorite, has a fun playground and walking paths. Ford Park has a playground and additionally two little lakes with ducks you can feed, amateur catch and release fishing, and a dog park. The biggest local employer is esri, a geographical information systems company, the largest of its kind in the world. It has a huge campus and draws talented people worldwide.
