PDF Editor FAQ

What has your homeowner's association done that you don't agree with?

Just about anything they do is aggravating and also stupid. They spent I don’t know how much money to plant numerous live oak trees in an area of only ten to fifteen feet apart. Our power-hungry president walks around sends you a citation if any leaves grow past the fence or if you put your trimmings out a day bedore the pickup although no one is complaining.I was having work done on side of my house for I had erosiion of soil next to my foundation and was tired of adding dirt and it looking awful too. So hired a landscaper which took out two ugly overgrown bushes so we could build a six inch border to level the area with dirt and add river rock and ornamental grass. He came running out screaming for the workers to stop for I had not gotten permission to remove the bushes and do anything. He even called the city to see if they could stop the workers which they couldn’t. Needless to say, I was furious. So, you have to get permission to pull a damn bush out, paint your house, add a fence, and on and on.We didn’t have this when we bought our homes and for several years. But the new guy with ego issues became president by default and now we are treated like children until we get rid of him. Many people on these boards have been deprived of any power in their life and then become HOA board members which makes trouble to all.It has ruined our small neighborhood from being friendly like it was.

Which US city has the most reports of hauntings?

My vote would be for Alton, Illinois. Alton was established in 1818 by Rufus Easton and named after his son. It is situated on limestone bluffs at the confluence of three major rivers: the Illinois, the Mississippi, and the Missouri. It became a ‘river-city’ with much affluent citizens in the 19th century who established all types of trade associated with river traffic.Native Americans had a large interactive interest in the area. The famous Piasa Bird, an ancient painting is on a cliff not far from Alton’s downtown. Relics continue to be found in the area. (Note: Alton, Illinois is approximately 15 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.)During the Civil War, the first penitentiary was built to house thousands of confederate soldiers. The prison was a cold, overcrowded and had an extremely harsh environment. Approximately 2,000 soldiers died during the smallpox outbreak in 1863–1864. There is a mass grave with a memorial which houses remains of these ‘unknown’ soldiers. After the war, the prison was torn down and its limestone blocks were purchased by businesses and homeowners. These were used as streets, retaining walls, walkways, and downtown buildings. The blocks are everywhere in Alton. It is said, the limestone with the rivers’ influences heightens the present day spiritual energy within the city.Additionally, Illinois was a free state after the Civil War. Missouri was not. Slaves often escaped Missouri and fled to Alton. As a result, many slaves were caught in the areas surrounding Alton and murdered (if they resisted going back to Missouri). This was a very negative environment, with negative energy.A sampling of the hauntings:McPike Mansion: constructed in 1869 for Henry McPike, former Mayor of Alton. It has been documented by various paranormal groups as the home of several apparitions and odd events. Persons interested in the paranormal have come from all over the world to document the McPike Mansion. The First Unitarian Church: In 1934, its Rev. Mercer died under unusual circumstances. During a church service, he had a seizure. He recovered and went to his church office to rest. He was found hanging from a high beam within the room, dead. Most thought it suicide, but there were no reasons to suggest he wanted to kill himself. Many believed he was possessed by the Devil. Since his death, the site is very active with paranormal events: whisperings, objects being moved, noises, etc.Milton School House: It is believed (and reported) an apparition of a young girl is seen. Legend, has it a young girl went missing and was later found murdered in/by the schoolhouse.Mineral Springs Hotel: (It is now an antique mall.) When the hotel first opened, a small girl accidently drowned in the hotel’s pool. She has been seen as well as mysterious droplets of water in the area in which the pool once was situated. This little girl ghost has been seen and felt by those touring the hotel. In Alton today, it is a community of about 30K people which has several types of industries. Many now visit Alton for its many antique shops, cultural activities, museums, restaurants and (of course) ghost tours. It is my belief that Alton’s history, the confluences of the rivers, the abundant limestone rock cliffs and rock-bricks used in the penitentiary all combine to make a strong, supernatural vibrating energy which enables the spirits of the departed to linger.Visit Alton, you will not be disappointed.
