Where can a script writer go to get an agent?

Since this question seems to reoccur frequently from aspiring screenwriters, my previous answer is worth repeating.It’s critically important for aspiring screenwriters to build positive relationships with Industry gatekeepers such as literary agents, rather than burn bridges. I can’t stress enough that for terribly busy agents, managers, producers and other entertainment industry professionals, TIME IS MONEY.Therefore, new writers need to understand when it is the right time to approach literary agents and when it is not. Ignore this advice at your own career peril.Over the years, I have had the privilege to interview well over 40 literary agents and managers, primarily for the Scriptwriters Network, Sherwood Oaks College, and the Screenwriting Expo. I have witnessed probably another few dozen interviews, and read detailed interviews of many, many more in various publications. This hardly represents a scientific sampling. But anecdotally, what is significant about nearly all the literary agent interviews is how similar the conclusions were.THREE CONCLUSIONS will likely surprise many aspiring screenwriters. FIRST, literary agents consistently agree that approximately 95% of submitted screenplays by unproduced writers are not even close to reaching the professional caliber needed for possible sale or even as a writing sample to obtain assignments.The vast majority of the scripts are dreadfully bad, with the writers totally unaware because they never sought qualified feedback on the material before submitting the scripts to agents. However, those poor submissions will likely destroy any future relationship possibilities between those writers and agents. Approximately 4% of the submissions are competent, but not going to sell. However, those writers are probably going to be encouraged to keep submitting material, since they are nearing the threshold of professional quality.That one writer in one hundred will prove the exception to the rule, finding an agent who can get that first script sale. But in my experience hearing of these success stories, many years of writing occurred before those first screenplay sales.SECOND, it is not true that people in Hollywood don’t read, but when time is money, people won’t read anything that wastes their valuable time. So, I wasn’t really surprised when most agents told me they only read non-client submissions to PAGE SEVEN before passing on the scripts. Their belief is confirmed by long experience that badly written scripts through page seven don’t read any better beyond page seven. Agents will often have a reader do script coverage to confirm their conclusions about the writer and the material. Rarely does coverage change anyone’s initial evaluations.The THIRD conclusion from literary agents I want to discuss in detail. Established literary agents all agreed that new writers truly did not understand why their efforts to attain representation fail so consistently. Yet, on Quora and every screenwriting site, the question of getting representation is among the most common asked. So, I will try to convey the common wisdom of these interviewed agents in my response, and hopefully others with knowledge will chime in with their own perspectives. My hope is aspiring screenwriters will benefit from all the shared answers.It is essential to understand exactly what a literary agent’s career goals are in any given month. Put concisely, agents have bills to pay, just like everyone else. They only get paid a maximum of 10% of any screenplay they manage to sell. This percentage is regulated by the state of California. Typically, entertainment attorneys will charge a rate of 5% for reviewing the highly complicated contracts between writers and studios/ production companies. Some high level writers have switched from agents to attorneys to pay 5% instead of 10%, because truly successful writers don’t really need help selling their scripts, as they are constantly employed writing on assignment. Literary managers can get 15-25% commissions, since they are not regulated by the state. However, many are worth every penny of their higher commissions, because they offer greater services to a fewer number of clients than in the typical agent’s client pool.Now, let’s take a typical successful established literary agent to illustrate some points. Many agents will handle between forty to sixty clients. These clients are all PRODUCED screenwriters, proud members of the WGA,west, who are paid writing professionals. These writers have earned commissions for the agent in the past, and the agent needs for this to happen often, because the agent has the same monthly bills that we have.To make the math easy, let’s say the agent currently has 50 writers on his client list. If you are wondering, most agents work LONG hours, but for this example, let’s say this particular agent only works 50 hours per week per month. That means, on average, each of his/her clients will be served by the agent approximately one hour per week, or 4 hours per month. Of course, many of the clients are working on television staff jobs or on feature rewrites or passionately banging away on new specs. This means the agent has more time to promote the unemployed clients with scripts ready for market. These unemployed professional writers have monthly bills to pay, too. So, you can imagine these writers expect their agent to be utilizing every awaking moment to get them paying gigs.Now, try to guess just how displeased an unemployed WGA member is when he learns his agent is attempting to sell a writing sample with potential, written by an unproduced non-client writer? Why isn’t that ungrateful agent working for the client with the long proven track record? Why indeed? These produced writers will be looking for new representation very soon unless assignments are forthcoming. So, an agent risks the likely future commissions of a proven writer when he is attempting that fast sale of the unproduced writer.Now, it’s true that almost every agent spends SOME time reading non-client screenplays. There are Nichol winning scripts, Sundance Workshop scripts, and scripts referred by friends, relatives, and mostly industry colleagues who might include executives, managers, actors, directors, and producers. These scripts will always get read before the blind submission by unproduced writer. This is the reality faced by the unproduced writer who submits his/her screenplay, oblivious to these considerations.To make matters worse, all potential BUYERS of any screenplay, meaning producers, production companies, studios, name actors and/or directors, will be risk averse to honestly consider an unproven screenwriter. With studio movies costing upwards of $90 Million to produce, the stakes are too high to hire the untested. Everyone up the Hollywood food chain wants to be able to cover their asses in case of a box office disaster. “Don’t blame me,” respond those with heads on the chopping blocks, “we hired an A-List scribe with two Oscars.” This accepted logic explains why so many films are written by the same small list of proven writers.Connections, above mere writing talent alone, explains why most new writers achieve that “big break,” hence the truth to the adage “it’s who you know more than what you know.” This is why I believe query letters and pitching events are a long-shot compared to developing long lasting relationships. But writers need to use common sense when pursuing these relationships.For example, literary agents all have ASSISTANTS, who are training to become agents. Those assistants don’t have their own clients yet. So, this is the perfect time for an unproduced writer to make introductions and offer to submit their material. What I suggest, is writers should send their scripts in PDF format, but explicitly tell these assistants, “please don’t read beyond page TEN unless you truly love the material.” This simple declaration will tell any future agent that such a writer understands the value of an agent’s time, and this writer will quite likely get an unbiased enthusiastic read well beyond page ten. Note, the assistant will likely read three more pages than their boss typically does. This particular strategy has actually worked for MANY of my clients.Of course, unproduced writers can pursue representation by literary MANAGERS instead of agents. Do you think most aspiring screenwriters understand the role of established literary agents?

Not sure why my question posted anonymously; I’m still learning my way around the Quora site. But I asked the question to begin a strongly needed discussion to help aspiring screenwriters overcome some important misconceptions about the role of literary agents.Over the years, I have had the privilege to interview well over 40 literary agents and managers, primarily for the Scriptwriters Network, Sherwood Oaks College, and the Screenwriting Expo. I have witnessed probably another few dozen interviews, and read detailed interviews of many, many more in various publications. This hardly represents a scientific sampling. But anecdotally, what is significant about nearly all the literary agent interviews is how similar the conclusions were.THREE CONCLUSIONS will likely surprise many aspiring screenwriters. FIRST, literary agents consistently agree that approximately 95% of submitted screenplays by unproduced writers are not even close to reaching the professional caliber needed for possible sale or even as a writing sample to obtain assignments. The vast majority of the scripts are dreadfully bad, with the writers totally unaware because they never sought qualified feedback on the material before submitting the scripts to agents. However, those poor submissions will likely destroy any future relationship possibilities between those writers and agents. Approximately 4% of the submissions are competent, but not going to sell. However, those writers are probably going to be encouraged to keep submitting material, since they are nearing the threshold of professional quality. That one writer in one hundred will prove the exception to the rule, finding an agent who can get that first script sale. But in my experience hearing of these success stories, many years of writing occurred before those first screenplay sales.SECOND, it is not true that people in Hollywood don’t read, but when time is money, people won’t read anything that wastes their valuable time. So, I wasn’t really surprised when most agents told me they only read non-client submissions to PAGE SEVEN before passing on the scripts. Their belief is confirmed by long experience that badly written scripts through page seven don’t read any better beyond page seven. Agents will often have a reader do script coverage to confirm their conclusions about the writer and the material. Rarely does coverage change anyone’s initial evaluations.The THIRD conclusion from literary agents I want to discuss in detail. Established literary agents all agreed that new writers truly did not understand why their efforts to attain representation fail so consistently. Yet, on Quora and every screenwriting site, the question of getting representation is among the most common asked. So, I will try to convey the common wisdom of these interviewed agents in my response, and hopefully others with knowledge will chime in with their own perspectives. My hope is aspiring screenwriters will benefit from all the shared answers.It is essential to understand exactly what a literary agent’s career goals are in any given month. Put concisely, agents have bills to pay, just like everyone else. They only get paid a maximum of 10% of any screenplay they manage to sell. This percentage is regulated by the state of California. Typically, entertainment attorneys will charge a rate of 5% for reviewing the highly complicated contracts between writers and studios/ production companies. Some high level writers have switched from agents to attorneys to pay 5% instead of 10%, because truly successful writers don’t really need help selling their scripts, as they are constantly employed writing on assignment. Literary managers can get 15-25% commissions, since they are not regulated by the state. However, many are worth every penny of their higher commissions, because they offer greater services to a fewer number of clients than in the typical agent’s client pool.Now, let’s take a typical successful established literary agent to illustrate some points. Many agents will handle between forty to sixty clients. These clients are all PRODUCED screenwriters, proud members of the WGA,west, who are paid writing professionals. These writers have earned commissions for the agent in the past, and the agent needs for this to happen often, because the agent has the same monthly bills that we have.To make the math easy, let’s say the agent currently has 50 writers on his client list. If you are wondering, most agents work LONG hours, but for this example, let’s say this particular agent only works 50 hours per week per month. That means, on average, each of his/her clients will be served by the agent approximately one hour per week, or 4 hours per month. Of course, many of the clients are working on television staff jobs or on feature rewrites or passionately banging away on new specs. This means the agent has more time to promote the unemployed clients with scripts ready for market. These unemployed professional writers have monthly bills to pay, too. So, you can imagine these writers expect their agent to be utilizing every awaking moment to get them paying gigs.Now, try to guess just how displeased an unemployed WGA member is when he learns his agent is attempting to sell a writing sample with potential, written by an unproduced non-client writer? Why isn’t that ungrateful agent working for the client with the long proven track record? Why indeed? These produced writers will be looking for new representation very soon unless assignments are forthcoming. So, an agent risks the likely future commissions of a proven writer when he is attempting that fast sale of the unproduced writer.Now, it’s true that almost every agent spends SOME time reading non-client screenplays. There are Nichol winning scripts, Sundance Workshop scripts, and scripts referred by friends, relatives, and mostly industry colleagues who might include executives, managers, actors, directors, and producers. These scripts will always get read before the blind submission by unproduced writer. This is the reality faced by the unproduced writer who submits his/her screenplay, oblivious to these considerations.To make matters worse, all potential BUYERS of any screenplay, meaning producers, production companies, studios, name actors and/or directors, will be risk averse to honestly consider an unproven screenwriter. With studio movies costing upwards of $90 Million to produce, the stakes are too high to hire the untested. Everyone up the Hollywood food chain wants to be able to cover their asses in case of a box office disaster. “Don’t blame me,” respond those with heads on the chopping blocks, “we hired an A-List scribe with two Oscars.” This accepted logic explains why so many films are written by the same small list of proven writers.Connections, above mere writing talent alone, explains why most new writers achieve that “big break,” hence the truth to the adage “it’s who you know more than what you know.” This is why I believe query letters and pitching events are a long-shot compared to developing long lasting relationships. But writers need to use common sense when pursuing these relationships.For example, literary agents all have ASSISTANTS, who are training to become agents. Those assistants don’t have their own clients yet. So, this is the perfect time for an unproduced writer to make introductions and offer to submit their material. What I suggest, is writers should send their scripts in PDF format, but explicitly tell these assistants, “please don’t read beyond page TEN unless you truly love the material.” This simple declaration will tell any future agent that such a writer understands the value of an agent’s time, and this writer will quite likely get an unbiased enthusiastic read well beyond page ten. Note, the assistant will likely read three more pages than their boss typically does. This particular strategy has actually worked for MANY of my clients.Of course, unproduced writers can pursue representation by literary MANAGERS instead of agents.
