How does the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses compare with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

Oh, where to begin? Are they prophets? The Governing Body of the Jehovah’s Witnesses proclaim not being inspired, thus none are prophets :The Governing Body is neither inspired nor infallible. Therefore, it can err in doctrinal matters or in organizational direction. In fact, the Watch Tower Publications Index includes the heading “Beliefs Clarified,” which lists adjustments in our Scriptural understanding since 1870. Of course, Jesus did not tell us that his faithful slave would produce perfect spiritual food.—Watchtower 2017 Feb p.26On the other hand, Latter-day Saints sustain the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as such twice every years :It is proposed that we sustain the counselors in the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators. All in favor, please manifest it.Contrary, if there be any, by the same sign.—General Conferences, Sustaining of General Authorities, Area Seventies, and General OfficersThe Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is certainly not infallible, but they certainly do not consider acceptable to “err in doctrinal matters”.Both the Governing Body and the First Presidency (including the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles) have known a period of dissent at some point, however both conclusions are quite different.Between 1852 (i.e. after Joseph Smith’s death) and 1892, an opinion started to be taught about Adam. In less than 2 years, many members started to disagreed with the teaching. Public and private debates arose and there was disharmony in the Quorums because of this. The First Presidency made an official end to this teaching in 1894 and, as early as 1902, the apostle Charles W. Penrose claimed, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never formulated or adopted any theory concerning the subject treated upon by President Young as to Adam." In other words, because this was not a unanimous teaching, it cannot be considered doctrine and has never been. Since then, that teaching has been denied and rejected categorically by Apostles and Presidents of the Church. No Apostle have ever been excommunicated for opposing that teaching within the 40 years it was promoted. There has been no known instance of disharmony since then.In 1980, some disagreement arose between members of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses regarding the significance of 1914, a doctrine that had been officially taught for the past 66+ years, uncontested. Within the same year, all dissenters of that doctrine were asked to either resign or be disfellowshipped. “In his 1997 study of the denomination, Penton concluded that since Raymond Franz's expulsion in 1980, the Governing Body displayed an increased level of conservatism, sturdy resistance to changes of policy and doctrines, and an increased tendency to isolate dissidents within the organization by means of disfellowshipping.”[1] When we consider that the very first member of the Governing Body was Thomas J. Sullivan (1932–1974), we realize that the disagreement did not arose from one individual, but from a teaching that existed over a decade before a Governing Body ever existed within the Organization.AppointmentDisregarding that the Governing Body are composed by a varying amount of elders while the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have always been twelve ever since the formation of the Church, in 1830, following the election of Twelve Apostles also by Jesus Christ Himself, the appointment of said Apostles compared with the Governing Body is quite different. The way a new Governing Body member is elected changed over time. Initially, there was only one “discrete slave”, Charles Taze Russell. However, upon his death, that title was not passed to another directly, or at least the term was fuzzy between the President of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania and the various members of the Society's board of directors. In other words, the way the Governing Body is currently interpreted did not exist before 1943, before Rutherford’s death. Today, new Governing Body members are elected through committees and such appointment separates the individual from the rest of Jehovah’s Witnesses; only anointed individuals, including members of the Governing Body, will be the ones who will actually serve with Christ, the rest of all Jehovah’s Witnesses will be part of another group. In other words, while members of the Governing Body are anointed, part of the 144,000, there are also other Jehovah’s Witnesses who are also anointed, but it is unclear who these people are.The Quorum of the Twelve, as the name states, have always been twelve. At times, when circumstances demanded, there may have been more called as “Apostles”, but never more than twelve have served in their capacity in the quorum. The President of the Church is the one accountable for selecting and calling the next Apostles. If incapacitated, the First Counselor, then the Second Counselor in the First Presidency would. Ultimately, if the First Presidency was unable to call an Apostle, the President of the Quorum of the Twelve would be able to. In other words, the authority to call new Apostles is given to the senior Apostle presiding. In other words, there is never an election process; Apostles are called by revelation, and those receiving this revelation are always those whom the Lord let serve the longest. Finally, every faithful Latter-day Saints who keep their covenants to the Lord will serve with Christ during His millennial reign; we know who they are because they are endowed, Apostles of the Lord are not from a different class, or a different crowd.Futhermore, Governing Body members can voluntarily resign, or step down, but an Apostle and a President of the Church cannot if not through personal apostasy; the Lord is the one electing His Apostles, and He is the one removing authority from those who part from Him.Spiritual FoodMembers of the Governing Body are the only ones ultimately authorized to interpret the Scriptures. Objections to their interpretations are not tolerated and will be met with being disfellowshipped, which also includes being cut-off from family members. As such all contents authorized for studying by Jehovah’s Witnesses must go through their approval. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles do not claim such exclusivity in interpretation. The vast majority of content produced by the Church is not produced by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and all Latter-day Saints are exhorted to receive personal revelations for themselves about any doctrinal matter. As such, the Apostle, Bruce R. McConkie wrote : “Every elder in the Church is or should be an apostle; that is, as a minister of the Lord and as a recipient of personal revelation from the Holy Ghost, every elder has the call to bear witness of the truth on all proper occasions. Indeed, every member should have apostolic insight and revelation, and is under obligation to raise the warning voice.” (McConkie, Bruce R. (1979). Mormon Doctrine. Deseret Book. pp. 46–47)The role of an Apostle of the Lord is to witness of Christ, that is to be an example for the Church and thus they are accountable to the doctrine being taught. They are not necessarily the ones providing the spiritual food.ConclusionThe Governing Body was formed and reformed over time following the corporate needs of the Watchtower, where it’s current organization, today, is very different from the one originally formed, which organization did not exist in the time of Rutherford or Russell. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is pretty much unchanged since the restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ, in 1830, which is also in similitude to the Twelve Apostles during New Testament times.TL;DR; there is no substantial comparison to make beyond administrative functions.Footnotes[1] Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses - Wikipedia
