PDF Editor FAQ
Why would someone choose to live in Indiana?
Like anywhere Indiana has its problems and it has its promise of a better life if you want to work for it and achieve. That being said there are individual places in Indiana that I wouldn’t be caught dead living in and there are cities and even semi rural areas that pretty decent quality places to live.It really depends on like many states the idea of location, location, location. Most people aren’t going to move to Gary, IN unless they have relatives there or something really going on to put up with the high crime and job situation and poverty. That being said there are quality places to live in Indiana just like there are dumpy run down meth infested towns like Austin, Scottsburg, Salem, Paoli, Bedford and a few others. The issue is where are you going to move to and what kind of neighborhood, cultural activities, business activities and employment that you’re going to be looking for. Indiana does have a lot of jobs but sometimes the pay and conditions aren’t always the best. The better education that you have and better job skills means that you’re going to be competing for the better jobs. If you choose to not improve yourself and learn job skills and be willing to work hard, you’ll never get anywhere. If you want to see evidence of this, see my hometown of Salem, Indiana in Washington County, Indiana for reference. Washington County, Indiana has been one of the ten poorest counties in Indiana for decades. Why? A high amount of people without education or skills or job training in the trades, colleges, 2 year schools, etc. They don’t have any real marketable skills so they live in a county and a town that basically has nothing much going for it.Drive 30 or 40 or 50 miles away or more and you’ll find plenty of jobs if you are willing to train and work hard and learn new skills. Factory jobs where you push a button and sit there and make a certain premade formed product are generally on the way out unless its a high skill occupation like making tool and die, certain metal forming or CNC work that pays relatively well. Indiana still has a lot of automotive related suppliers and factories but in most of these towns they are still shedding jobs and moving to higher level and higher technical skilled jobs. The town I grew up in named Salem, Indiana ranks 82nd in the State of Indiana for personal income as well as median income. Even worse, it ranks 91st out of 92 counties in the State of Indiana in regards to family income where one or both adults work and maybe the kids work a little bit on the side. However, that is mostly adults working and both adults working. Therefore, with the low levels of education in Salem and Washington County as in college graduates, trade school graduates and even graduates from Ivy Tech or some other 2 year based certificate program the community has issues. On the other hand you can live 30 miles away in Floyd County, Indiana which is a county adjacent to Louisville, Kentucky and find a much higher standard of living and quality of life. Add in the people that move to Indianapolis in certain areas along with Columbus, Bloomington, Evansville, Jasper and such that have higher standards of living and better jobs for people that are interested in learning and achieving. The same can be said for the area across the river from Louisville, Kentucky being of a higher standard of living generally while counties further out from the metro areas have even worse problems with low incomes, poverty, educational scarcity, lack of quality education and all of those things factor into why certain areas of Indiana have issues. You’ve got certain areas of Indiana that have been overtaken by the meth problem and heroin problem and its a big problem in a lot of more rural areas of Indiana because people simply don’t care or simply get hooked onto meth, heroin, coke, spice, etc. The education levels are low and most of the time people that have something going for themselves aren’t going to blow a 50,000 dollar a year career or job of even a 75,000 or 100,000 a year job on doing something stupid like meth or cocaine or piss their lives away. When you look at these small towns in Southern Indiana mostly a belt between Bedford to Paoli and then over through Salem, Scottsburg, Seymour and the like its characteristic of the population there to be not very well educated in life experience, college degrees, trade school experience, etc.Smart people don’t piss their lives away getting involved in drugs for the most part because they’ve got projects, work, business meetings, family activities and the such. Most of them aren’t going to be hanging around town at 1 am doing meth with their criminal friends and wasting away. The rural area of where I grew up in Washington County has been overrun with meth, criminal lowlifes, alcoholics that get drunk and hit people, drug pushers, bums and people that basically exist only to get arrested and re-arrested time after time for doing stupid things that get them thrown in jail and then wonder why they have problems keeping paid employment or improving their lives.I am currently in my mid 40s and I have to shake my head at the people in my hometown where I have links to family that has lived there since 1806 and I have to shake my head and wonder what the hell is wrong with a good segment of these people. We’re not talking about some 20 something year old caught with smoking a joint by the local cops and then getting a short jail sentence at the county cooker for simply smoking marijuana. We’re talking about people that basically choose to be total idiots and get locked up repeatedly for breaking the law including burglary and theft to get money to buy drugs. Not to mention popping pills of all sorts, meth usage and manufacturing, sitting on their ass collecting government benefits while being able bodied and refusing work despite the fact they are able bodied.Indiana isn’t a horrible state but it has some severe problems with meth usage and meth manufacturing along with people that think the rest of society owes them something as in refusing to work and produce and do something that would be socially beneficial. The next problem in the Southern part of Indiana especially Salem, Indiana is that there is a revolving door justice system that exists and some of these people simply aren’t getting the help they need to live clean and productive lives. The same people keep getting locked away by the system instead of cleaning up their lives and they arrested over and over for the same stupid criminal activity and stupidity that they have been involved in for years. We’re talking about people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, etc that have serious criminal records and felonies on their records that keep them from getting employment and they also refuse to work for a living so that means they’re dependent on handouts while being able bodied individuals who refuse to act in an adult manner. Now you might be thinking I am getting away of why people would move to Indiana. What I am trying to get at is that there are undesirable communities in many parts of Indiana. Then again, you have college towns like Bloomington, West Lafayette, etc that have a higher standard of living and you have a higher level of education and educated people that at least are smart enough to attain some standard of living and common sense not to be hooked into serious drug problems that get them arrested. You’ve also got a lot of bedroom communities in Indiana which are easily accessible to larger cities in Indiana that aren’t exactly small towns and more like suburbs to the point that everyone won’t know your business because everyone doesn’t have time to stick their nose in your business and they have enough of a life to deal with paying house payments or rent, feeding their kids, working, watching TV or partaking in social events or hobbies or the like. Not to mention some of the interesting cultural events and sporting events in Indiana like motor racing, college and high school basketball, pro basketball, professional and college football etc. There are also a lot of things to see and do in Indiana in various places even though you might have to travel a couple of hours in some cases or up to 5 hours from North to South or vice versa. Some of these things are Indiana Dunes State Park, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Chicago, IL and its great number of attractions. Central Indiana of course has Indianapolis and things like the Indianapolis Zoo, Children’s Museum, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts, an extensive park system, bars, restaurants and pretty much anything you really would want.Rural parts of Indiana have events and festivals and places like Brown County, Parke County, McCormicks Creek, Patoka Lake, Lake Monroe, scenic drives along the Ohio River or in various areas of the state, etc.Would I like the economy in Indiana to be a lot better? Of course, but a lot of that is due to the lack of education in rural areas of Indiana and the fact they aren’t to be able to compete with next level type of jobs and occupations if they’re busy doing drugs, not paying attention in school, being criminals, refusing to work and educate themselves and expecting a government handout. I also understand that people fall on hard times sometimes by circumstance but also sometimes by their own bad decisions and refusal to push themselves to higher level pursuits. So in essence if you want to be a bum and expect someone else to do the heavy lifting for you, you’ll find it in certain towns and cities of Indiana. Just like you’ll find opportunities just like anywhere else in the United States. One thing that can be said about Indiana is that certain areas of the state government are trying to drag the rest of the state kicking and screaming into the 21st century and its that some small town habits are dying very hard and its going to take a lot of pain for people to open up their minds and get out of the 1950s.In certain rural locations those times of walking into a factory and thinking you’re going to be successful economically and fiscally and getting that job for a lifetime isn’t going to pan out and you’re going to have to get skilled trades or an education or come up with your own business plan and find a way to make it work. A lot of people in Indiana haven’t quite figured that out yet.So if you’re thinking about moving to Indiana do your due diligence and your research and find out what kind of place you are thinking about moving to because nowhere is going to be a total nirvana or paradise and nowhere is going to be perfect but maybe you can find someplace that will work out for you quite. Just don’t expect that many very rural parts of Indiana in the state are going to have a lot of opportunity and if you gravitate within an hour of a mid sized Indiana city you’ll have a better than decent chance of having a better quality of life. It’s sad that I have to say this but the biggest event in the past 20 years that happened in my hometown of Salem, Indiana was that they got a brand new Walmart Supercenter in the town 28 years after many neighboring communities only 20 or 30 miles away have had them since 1988. One example is the small impoverished Southern Indiana town of Paoli that has had a Wal Mart Supercenter since about 1996 and other towns like Bedford in 1986, Seymour 1988, Scottsburg 1988, Corydon 1986, Clarksville 1988.However, Salem got all excited about this event in 2016 despite the fact that some of the city fathers, small businesses and local population claimed it would run out the overpriced and underperforming local retail sector. The laughable part about the entire episode is that the people claiming that it would run all of the small businesses out are the ones that are now shopping at that very Wal Mart Supercenter. Before, they would have to drive to Clark, Floyd, Scott, Orange, Jackson, Harrison or other Southern Indiana counties because they couldn’t find products in their own counties and the local population was driving 20 to 30 miles to go to Walmart anyway.Of course, the scions of Salem and so called local community do gooders cried that it was going to decimate the center of the community even though the center of the community looks in many ways run down, trashy in appearance and many of the businesses were simple craft businesses or such small enterprises that they really don’t produce much. Even worse is how the local government including county commissioners and county council spent years dissuading companies that wanted to relocate to Salem, Indiana like Valeo Sylvania and countless other plants that wanted to open in the local industrial park area but finally went elsewhere because of the politics and wrangling of the local good old boy corrupt politicians including law enforcement that looked the other way when drugs were being brought into the community and looked the other way when lawyers and other government officials knew these drugs were going to hurt the community and turn it into a run down dump. The do gooders always want to talk about how they are preserving the community and the so called character of the community all the while it being a haven for meth abuse, meth manufacturing, criminal activity and such. As someone that grew up in Salem and the surrounding county, its quite a shame what the community has been reduced to over the last 30 plus years all because a few people had to have their way. If you’re really interested in bettering your life stay away from certain areas of Southern Indiana especially like I said that belt between Bedford to Seymour and then down to Paoli over to Scottsburg including Salem which is a laughingstock these days.
