PDF Editor FAQ

After reaching a peak of power in the 900s, reconquering Jerusalem, why was it that by 1076 Byzantium started to decline?

Byzantium probably reached its true peak of power around the beginning of the reign of Justinian, but its second peak, so to say, was probably around 1025.The 900s were still a period of recovery for the Romans, but the 1000s were truly the culmination of centuries of conflict with the Arabs and Bulgars. For some time, the Romans enjoyed the status of being the most powerful empire in Europe. Then the Turks. The Seljuks took a prospering and flourishing Byzantine state and turned it into a Balkan empire begging for help from the West in less than half a century. When the Byzantines invited the Turks into Anatolia, they basically doomed themselves to ruin.Basically they began a decline by 1076 because they had lost half of their empire, and with that, a big chunk of recruiting grounds and tax payers.

I just finished watching Silence of the Lambs and I noticed that the police and MS. Starling use .38 Caliber. Was it realistic that they used such guns in those days?

Question: I just finished watching Silence of the Lambs and I noticed that the police and MS. Starling use .38 Caliber. Was it realistic that they used such guns in those days? The other answers to this question seem to forget that the film was AFTER the infamous Miami shootout in 1986. (See below)Following that event where two FBI agents were killed and several others were wounded, the Bureau decided to “upgrade” their weaponry to the 10mm, with Smith & Wesson 1076 being the weapon of choice. Unfortunately for female agents and men with small hands, the 1076 was a less than ideal choice. Additionally the felt recoil from the 10mm is quite pronounced, making its learning curve a steep one. After several years and multiple problems with the 1076, the Bureau transitioned to the Sig Sauer line. This was much better for all involved; however the problem of the 10mm’s recoil was still an issue. The Bureau finally decided toward the end of the 1990s to transfer over to 9mm’s and .40 S&W (a shortened version of the 10mm) and with the exception of agents on the HRT and special teams who can carry .45 ACPs, those became the standards. Most likely because her hands are relatively small as her frame (She’s only 5′3″), it was easier to give Foster a small revolver than it would have been to have her carry, aim, and act with a larger 10mm or even a 40 S&W. As a rookie agent, she would have been assigned to carry the latest weapon and that would not have been a wheel gun in 1991.The S&W 1076Episode One: April 11, 1986: The bloodiest day in FBI history

Why did the FBI switch over to carrying Glocks?

Why did the FBI switch over to carrying Glocks? The Bureau was issuing revolvers up until shortly after the 1986 Miami shootout, though SWAT was issued S&W Model 459 9mm semiautos which were subsequently replaced by SIG P226 9mm’s. The Miami shootout, in which the agents were armed with a variety of .38 Special and .357 Magnum revolvers, 9mm semiautos, and 12 ga shotguns, resulted in a debate within the Bureau about handgun calibers and pistols.Shootout in Miami | RECOILSmith & Wesson Model 13 .357 MagnumSome favored retaining the 9mm but finding better ammunition. (1980s-era 9mm JHP was typically a 115-grain, or lighter, fully jacketed bullet with a tiny cavity. It’s primary job was to function reliably; expansion was an afterthought. It generally performed like ball ammunition.) The other camp favored the .45 ACP. As a compromise, the Bureau settled on a .40 caliber round, but the problem was that the only .40 caliber then commercially available was the 10mm Auto.Smith & Wesson Model 1076 10mm FBI10mm is fine round but is the next best thing to a magnum. It’s loud, has fairly stiff recoil, and requires the pistol be built on a large frame due to the length of the case. The FBI convinced Winchester to produce a 180-grain JHP 10mm load at 950fps, substantially slower than a full-power loading (and ballistically equivalent to a 180-grain .45ACP round.) S&W produced a modified version of its Model 1076, with a lighter recoil spring, in which the new loading would function. (These pistols were unsafe with full-power 10mm ammunition.)The 1076 FBI models proved unsatisfactory. They were big (slightly larger than a 1911), heavy, and difficult for people with small hands to control. Eventually, after the introduction of subsonic 147-grain JHP 9mm ammunition by Winchester, Federal, and others, the Bureau recalled the 1076s and began issuing 9mm SIG P228s.SIG P228 9mmEnter Glock. The only thing wrong with metal-framed SIG pistols is that they’re expensive. In the early ‘90s, a P228 retailed for around $400. A Glock 17 retailed for closer to $300. Of course, the government pays nowhere close to that price. The law enforcement price for a Glock 17 in 1996 was $250 to an individual officer buying on department letterhead. The G was probably paying $50–75 less.Glock 17 GEN 2 9mmIn addition, Glocks have very few moving parts and require less gunsmithing if something breaks, which is infrequent. (The only structural failures I ever saw were trigger pin failures on late-80s Glock 17s that had had upwards of 10,000 rounds through them and I understand Glock made a design change to address that.) Once the Bureau had a contract with Glock to supply pistols and had issued most of their on-hand SIGs, they began issuing Glocks. That would have been around 1990.I am not a Glock fan. I tolerated Glocks the last ten years I was with the government, but I never liked them. The trigger is creepy and the grip-to-barrel angle is just wrong. Never mind the sights. I don’t own any Glocks because I’m not buying a pistol just to install aftermarket parts.A History of FBI Handguns
