Your reputation was tested in many ways, mainly through verbal debates or armed combat.These people were literally in the arena, fighting for their honor…and their lives.The more risk you incurred upon yourself, the more honor was bestowed upon you. The people who were spectators incurred little to no risk, so they gained little to no honor.This is not the case today.We live in a culture where people who do nothing, people who spectate - dictate waaaaaay too much of our collective societal thought.All talk…with no fucking action.After all, we don’t need action. We live in a society where things come to us. We don’t have to go out and seek them. Amazon Prime, ready-made pizza, a la carte eCommerce clothing stores…these things are luxuries. These things…our ancestors could only dream of.Our ancestors… were not sedentary in any capacity whatsoever.Their time was either spent scanning the landscape for opportunities or actively pursuing them. They had to hunt and forage…or else they died.That’s not the case anymore. You can live your entire life in a passive, sort of “durrr” state not contributing to anything, not on the prowl, not on the hunt.When the human being, the human animal does not hunt, it will naturally go into observer mode.Sitting on a couch, staring at a screen for hours on end - that’s observer mode.Sitting and scrolling through the news feed on Facebook or Instagram constantly - that’s observer mode.Clicking video after video after video on YouTube - that’s observer mode.There is nothing inherently wrong with “observer mode”. Our species would have died out long ago without the ability to scan the environment for opportunities and threats.The problem occurs when someone spends a majority of their life in that mode. Scanning, scanning, scanning…with no execution.Who are these people?Some of them include your self-help junkies, social media “political theorists”, cyber bullies/keyboard warriors, “social justice warriors”, new age “gurus”, moral crusaders…the list goes on endlessly.People who passively observe are now encouraged to do so. They are the ones who are gifted with all the acclaim and given all of the praise.All of the upside with none of the risk.One of my friends criticized me for doing yoga.“That’s such a girly thing to do. It doesn’t do anything anyway.”I replied: “Well, have you tried it?”“Well, uh…I took a class once or twice.” Translation: no.I was out with some other friends. I saw a woman I was attracted to, so I approached her. I was rejected. I was met with laughs.“There’s tons of girls here. Why don’t one of you guys talk to one and show me how it’s done?”Response: Dead silence.I was talking to a trainer at the gym I frequent about travel. The subject in particular was Europe.I told him I’ve been several times and it’s always an awesome experience. I then asked him if he’s ever been.“I kinda always wanted to go, but you know…all the stuff with terrorism and all…I just don’t think it’s that safe, y’know?”“Where did you hear that?” I asked, puzzled.“You know, I see it all the time on TV and everything…”So this guy is concerned about Europe, a continent with some of the safest cities in the world, while we live in a city that has one of the highest murder per capita rates in North America.And to top it all off, he got his “info” from television…The person who sticks their neck out, who puts in the work, puts in the effort, and puts their foot in the arena…is now the one who is subject to endless criticism and questioning, as if they committed a crime.If I didn’t answer these people in the affirmative, throwing their inane statements back at them - they would stand unopposed.That’s not how it should be, but lo and behold - it is.It is easier to go on Twitter, make a fake account, and say things that you wouldn’t have the gall to say in real life.It is easier to watch other people have sex than to have it yourself.It is easier to criticize a professional athlete for being on performance enhancing drugs than to get in comparable shape.It is easier to say a Grammy-award winning, multi-platinum musician “sucks” than to be one yourself.It is easier to tear apart a TED talk than to even have the qualifications to be invited to speak at one.It is easier to say a business is a terrible idea than start one yourself.It is easier to destroy than it is to create.All of those things require little to no effort, yet people heap praise on them.It’s like praising a fire-starter instead of fire-fighter.Do you think Elon Musk sat around and engaged in debates whether Tesla would fail or not?Do you think Mother Teresa sat around and “prayed” for people and children to live a better life?Do you think the people of the 1960s Civil Rights movement continually sat and engaged in rhetoric of a change that needed to happen in America?Do you think the Wright Brothers tried to debate all the people who said humanity would never take to the skies?The people who are moving and shaping the world? They aren’t sitting around bitching, complaining, and passively observing.They are out getting knocked on their ass, getting back up, and trying again.You know what the life of a passive spectator is like? It’s hell. Absolute hell.The life of a perpetual spectator is a narcissistic, self-indulgent perversion that feeds on its own negativity, envy, complacency, cowardice, and anxiety. They seek pleasure as a way to fill and ignore the gnawing emptiness inside. As a result, these people are always searching for the next high, the next hit, the next buzz, the next stimulus…and they never find it.The life of an active participant in life is a perpetual high, a perpetual stimulus. It’s a high that you can’t package, a high you can’t smoke, snort, or swallow. These people have no time for anxiety, self-pity, or any other creations of an idle mind, because they are doing.Your TV is not an accurate depiction of reality. Your Facebook news feed is not an accurate depiction of reality. People aren’t murderous savages and the world isn’t an unfriendly place. No one is out to take your money. The opposite sex is not as scary as you think. There is no collective conspiracy to “keep you down”.But of course, you wouldn’t know that if you don’t get out from behind your screen and interact with the world.Life isn’t lived up in your head, through theory, through rhetoric, or mental masturbation. It’s not lived through a 2-dimensional representation of reality.It’s lived out there with actual tests, actual experimentation, actual doing.Human beings are not meant to sit around forever. We are meant to do. You can only be a human being only if you are spending some of your time doing.If you are a perpetual spectator, you have talked enough. Now show what you are doing.You have talked on and on about problems. Show us a solution.You have hidden in the shadows long enough.
