Also, COEP is more than a decent place to grow and explore yourself. So here I am. Presently, I am a second year student at COEP studying the very same course and hence I am qualified to give overall perspective of this course without any bias. Not following any conventional manner of writing Pros and Cons in the answer. Most important things comes first.Peer group - Most important aspect of any college and the only parameter which prominently decides the excellence of any college. You’ll be spending your 4 years with the sharpest minds of Maharashtra and some includes even to the list of India’s finest. No boasting or no doubt about that. Go to PICT, MIT, Walchand or name any other college; In the best case scenario of being blindsided by today’s trend of taking CS IT branches. But what prerequisites are mandatory for Algorithmic thinking is a sound,nourished mind and a laptop with a great internet connection. So, ultimately you get familiar with sites like hackerrank, stackoverflow, codechef, edx, udacity,udemy only via exposure(even writing this answer on quora is a result of exposure which my brother showered on me) and that’s what all, you get here. This is a bit rare in other colleges. So, ultimately specially in CS related branch you succeed only when you have true conviction and dedication towards programming. Initially, during my first semester as subjects were quite hectic due to excessive drawing as well as architecture based courses and also due to a bit criticism regarding the branch, I was completely dejected in between halfway of the semester and felt like leaving the college. But later after confronting the faculty, seniors, even alumni, I realized that there are ample of opportunities existing in industry today for planners.Masters- As planning is a very diverse branch, majority of the students go for Masters in reputed foreign universities as well as IITs, SPAs, etc. Also, only one batch has passed till now (Planning branch marked it’s inception in 2012) even then Two students are studying in foreign universities with fully funded Scholarship and also this year one of our senior is heading Amsterdam and one student has got into Cornell which is an Ivy League. It’s been only two passed out batches since inception and we have reached the Ivy league now itself. Perks of being in Planning - Maintaining a decent GPA is not very difficult due to obvious reasons and also chances of getting Masters in very reputed foreign University is fairly more easy due to less competition or rather crowd in this field. Eg. 8+ GPA with 320+ score in GRE plus required credentials(Decent btech project, Few insightful internships,LORs, well groomed SOP) might fetch you a seat in Top 15 colleges of the World. Whereas for other branches the criteria will be much more strict as competition being fierce.Civil Services - Also, many students in the final year are preparing for Civil Services exam and many of my classmates aspire to do it from now itself. With almost 17 students getting selected this year from the college. This including AIR 11(Maharashtra rank 1), COEP hosts as an excellent hub for future IAS, IPS,IFS,PCS, etc.Management- Some final year students are also preparing for CAT and GMAT for direct getting into fast train and some out of money craving reaons. Perks- Again CGPA factor gives you advantage as IIMs take graduation marks very seriously as it being a potential criteria for shorlisting of candidates. Also, top IIMs look for diversity in their batch so again probability of converting IIMs is also high in contrary to major chunk of engineering grads.Government Sector- There are ample amount of jobs in Planning sector. Especially, in organizations like All India local self government bodies, HUDCO, CIDCO, ULBS ( Urban local bodies) and many Planning related departments(TCPO, MMRDA, MCGM, PMC, etc) which offer 4–5 lac per annum.Private Sector- Sure, this aspect is the only loophole which needs drastic improvement but eventually even this is improving. As alumni will spread all over the World in coming years, this prospect will also outshine like other. Still, this year though a meager number but students were placed in mass recruiting giants like Cognizant, Infosys, etc. Never to forget that a major chunk of all branches are placed here. (Ranging between 3–5 lac per annum)Startups- Also, few of very first graduates i.e who passed in 2016, have started up with company which deals with Urban Planning, Transportation, Environmental Planning ,etc.Miscellaneous- This aspect is yet to fill as there has been only one batch which has passed out, so not a lot of students have come under the sample space. ;) Still, A 3rd year student, Mayur Girase has made a world record in Dot sketching (dont have entire idea about it, you can google for more info) which has been registered in Limca book of records and has been rewarded with many other laurels. And, also as curriculum ranges from very few core civil subjects, statistics and probability in first year, law related courses to finance and economics related subjects, so you have the liberty to enter any field you aspire to enter. Be it economics, finance, law, etc. So you see, leaving no stone unturned in this aspect too.Life- This is the major reason which propelled me to choose this branch over other branches in varied colleges.( Was getting Electronics in SPIT, IT in Kj Somaiya, Mech and extc in DJ Sanghvi at the respective last rounds of some management quota counselling) And trust me, how much ever i write i can’t cover the width of this aspect. Its phenomenally magnificent and add the best adjective you know. As me being a great sports enthusiast and a person who is enormously fond of numerous extra curricular, this place helps to nurture your talent and help it to transform to the greatest scale. Be it Sports(every possible sport is there which will at any renowned college), Arts, Crafts,( Probably, i think its the best among the whole country. You can see for yourself and find out whether i am boasting or rather stating facts) Dance, Music,( Not occasional but regular winners of Purshottam Karandak, Firodiya Karandak and have also displayed outstanding work at various fests including Mood I,etc) Photography, Astronomy, Kayaking, Rowing,etc and anything, you name it and there will be people who are your “Dad” in respective disciplines. COEP has some serious reputation and fame associated with it so you sure are recognized with some respect. Even a reason to boast to keep your relatives quiet and also a reason for your parents satisfaction although you know that you aren’t some hotshot guy at COEP but it sure does shut the smug faced world.(Atleast less educated uncles, aunties, dada, dadis) :P :P ;)Curriculum and Faculty- To be very frank as i have swore that this answer isn’t biased and am giving my solely true opinion, I have to admit we need tremendous improvement in this area. Curriculum is extremely redundant and needs drastic change as majority of things taught are repetitive and doesn’t give chance to think about ideas or to shape analytical thinking or doesn’t give scope of ensuring any employable skills. As it’s been only one year and it’s my opinion over that period only but sure did we learn some great courses and skills including surveying, basic excel usage for data interpretation,Statistics and Probability ( My favourite course), Fundamentals of Urban and regional planning to shape our planning framework. And best part is that these benefits are rare in other branch and in today’s world hence gives us edge over other graduates of varied disciplines. I think faculty too need to improve over various areas by making things really interesting, ensuring classes on time and pre decided venue, promoting more solid content based discussion and a friendly environment to learn. There are few teachers who do excel in every aspect but many need some sort of improvement. But as I and one of my classmate discussed with one faculty of ours and got to know that from forthcoming year we’ll be offered electives and can study courses of worth 12 credits from other departments. This was already there for all other branches but i guess it will be offered to Btech Planning students too.If you are certain of taking drop and feel that you can improve then i would suggest definitely do give it a try but when compared to better courses ( CS, IT) at other tier 2 colleges, I think Btech planning is anytime better than them. Only if you are very keen on doing some core engineering like Mech, Civil, Electrical then I guess; only then you can go for other colleges. As, I was like many of the students of India who didn’t have exact idea of what i like. So the people which comes under that category, for them it’s a Perfect option.I have tried to make this as exhaustive as it could be but nothing changes the fact that in today’s era where people are doing wonders irrespective of barriers like college, branch, background and what not, it’s very certain that ultimately you only have to fight to find your passion and have to work towards it. In my case I have been just surfing FB and wasting my time !Coming to the point you have a very ample amount of time, by which you can crack your JEE easily if you are determined now! If you ask most of the JEE aspirants where do they go back in their life, they will definitely say its my day when my 10th STD board exams got over !!This is because we(including me) don’t know what to do and how to prepare for JEE and what kind of books to work on and on what basis theory must be learnt and etc… .This is only because we didn’t get much advice from our coaching institutes on how to work on ! They just said us to “Lets Move ON!” !. First of if you have joined any coaching institutes then you go the faculties of that institute and then fell free to talk with them and say that you want to achieve big and what to do ON DAILY BASIS for it ! . Most of the teachers will definitely be eager to help you as they as get excited about you!And hen the most are seniors !! Talk to the person who you know and also you don’t! This is because they know heir secret of Success and their story will give a plot to create your own ! Not only talk to those who got high ranks but also to the good ones who you would have known before, and who is good at his studies but unfortunately lost his ranks ! So with one shot go with buying all the Books of Cengage Learning Media of Chemistry - These books are really really awesome than O.P.Tandon and … . And these books are also personally suggested by my teachers as they are Awesome to the core !
