I went out to eat at a local restaurant a few days ago. My server was a former student. I was so happy to see her! She was a smart young girl when I had her in junior high and to see her now, all grown up, was just wonderful.I asked what she was doing these days, besides working at the restaurant. She told me she had just graduated from the local community college and would be starting at a state university in the fall, majoring in engineering.She asked me if I remembered showing her class a video on childbirth when she was in my class. I did; it was something I did every year. I was required to teach the major body systems, one of which is the reproductive system. Of course, I had the undivided attention of 7th graders when that subject came along!Each year, I had a special day where I would see only the girls in my classes (the principal arranged for the boys to be elsewhere during that time period.) I showed them actual video of a normal vaginal birth and then video of a C-section. I explained what was going on during each video. Then I showed them actual pictures of the effects of sexually trasmitted diseases on the female genitalia.I did all of this, of course, with signed permission from parents. If I didn’t get a signed permission paper back from the student, she didn’t participate.The following day, my classes were reversed with the boys coming to me and the girls going elsewhere. I showed the boys the childbirth videos, explaining what they were expecting a girl to go through when they pressured her to “be my baby momma.” I then showed them the effects of sexually transmitted diseases on male genitalia. These were actual medical photos- not drawings.Back to the restaurant…..This former student told me that because of that day of videos and pictures, she made the decision not to have children before she got married. She said, “It’s because you showed us those videos that I don’t have any kids now.”I almost cried, she touched me so deeply!(BTW…teen pregnancy is rampant in that particular city, especially among Black girls, which she is.)So…there will be one fantastic engineer in this world who gets to fulfill her dream because she paid attention in class one day. And apparently one day is all it takes sometimes.

For passwords to Mint itself, we compute a secure hash of the user's chosen password and store only the hash (the hash is also salted - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_%28cryptography%29 ). Hashing is a one-way function and cannot be reversed. It is not possible to ever see or recover the password itself. When the user tries to login, we compute the hash of the password they are attempting to use and compare it to the hashed value on record. (This is a standard technique which every site should use).For banking credentials, we generally must use reversible encryption for which we have special procedures and secure hardware kept in our secure and guarded datacenter. The decryption keys never leave the hardware device (which is built to destroy the key material if the tamper protection is attacked). This device will only decrypt after it is activated by a quorum of other keys, each of which is stored on a smartcard and also encrypted by a password known to only one person. Furthermore the device requires a time-limited cryptographically-signed permission token for each decryption. The system (which I designed and patented) also has facilities for secure remote auditing of each decryption.
