I know this answer isn’t perfect relevant to the question, but it’s such a good story.Back in my embedded development days, a hardware engineer counted the number of 0 bytes in an executable image, then accused the software developers of being inefficient because there were some. We asked him if he knew that these weren’t opcodes. We asked him if it was ever appropriate to initialize a variable (particularly a pointer) to zero before using it. We asked him if these zeros were in the initialized data segment, where it didn’t matter if they were 0 or some other value. We rewrote his scanner to read longwords instead of bytes, and the number of zeros decreased substantially. The controversy eventually died down, but for a week the software team didn’t get any work done due to fending off his accusations.At the same company, ROMs had to be stored in document control and also in the Bill of Materials using an elaborate paper process that had to be repeated every time there was a software change. It happened that the process was much simpler for making a change to an assembly like a circuit board or instrument case. Some software wag proposed adding two items to inventory, a binary 0 and a binary 1, and simplifying the change process by making the ROMs an assembly of so-many 1’s and so-many 0’s assembled by compiling the source code.Document control simplified the process for making changes to ROMs instead. Smart.

The community fell apart after less than three years.George Ripley founded the Utopian settlement of Brook Farm (1841–1847) near the Boston suburb of Roxbury to pursue the transcendentalism made popular by Thoreau and Emerson. The basis was choice of work and equal compensation for all work. Ripley soon began pushing the socialist doctrine of Fourierism.Drop City (pictured) took root in 1965 in southern Colorado as a hippie artist commune and gradually came apart in the early 70s.There have been many more such communities. Indeed, we are a truly free nation open to social experimentation and visions of all sorts—spiritual, material, idealistic, artistic, educational, you name it. Anyone is free to pursue his/her happiness in whatever way makes sense to him/her personally, respecting the equal rights of others, of course. And the bulk of such experiments have been, and likely always will be, imbued with socialism in one form or another.All such experiments have been perfectly compatible with our constitutional principles, the Bill of Rights including free speech and freedom of religion, as well as our republican form of government that is constitutionally guaranteed. Sometimes the neighbors did get riled by the free love and late-night chanting. And, come to think of it, I shouldn’t say all such experiments. From the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang to the Manson Family to the Weather Underground to the Symbionese Liberation Army, some of the more anarchic experiments have run afoul of a law or two here and there.But here’s the deal… while you can start whatever Utopian community you like, when it comes to state and federal governance, we are guaranteed republicanism, and that form of governing has zero compatibility with the statism inherent in social democracy, democratic socialism, fascism or state communism—the forms of socialism capable of ruling polities bigger than a community. In this country, all socialism must be voluntary. No one can be compelled to engage in socialism. Remember: We are a truly free nation open to social experimentation and visions of all sorts, and that includes a guarantee not to have someone else’s idea of Utopia thrust on us.
