PDF Editor FAQ

How often do supercar owners drive their cars?

Honest answer? Not nearly enough. And I tried. I really, really, really tried. The story I’m about to tell draws a lot of parallels from a recent answer I did to the question “What are the things they DON’T tell you about owning a supercar?” (PS. Thank you all for the 2k upvotes and comments in a few days!)First, let’s look at the hard numbers and then explain.Supercar #1: Twin Turbo Lamborghini Superleggera (pictured below with my favorite coffee) -> 1.5 Years of Ownership = 4,500 milesSupercar #2: Porsche 911 Turbo (997.2) -> 2.5 Years of Ownership = 20,000 milesNow, the Porsche is my daily and the Lambo is a “weekend” car, although truth be told, I could drive either of these cars ANY day of the week and twice on Sundays. How is this possible? Well, for one I work from home so driving is mostly for errands and/or pleasure. Also, these cars are in SoCal where weather is opportune 95% of the year, if not more. So no excuses of “winter” or other environmental factors.(Now because of the work circumstance, my story may differ from others who have daily commutes where putting miles is a necessity. But even if I could drive the Lambo to work, I wouldn’t.)Before I owned these cars, I was THAT guy who criticized supercar owners for not driving their cars enough. I thought of it as wasteful. Even ungrateful to a degree.I thought to myself, “Ha, these guys don’t DESERVE a fine machine like this if it’s just gonna sit in a garage collecting dust”.Fast forward a couple years later to owning my DREAM garage…(PS. There’s a pic of that garage on some of my other answers)And what do you know? I became the guy I criticized just a couple years back.Funny how life tends to come full circle.I would go days, weeks even, without driving these cars if I didn’t *have* to.It got to a point where I would sometimes force myself to drive them just to keep the car battery from dying.I’m not going to reiterate my answer to what supercar owners DON’T tell you, but frankly, driving the cars just became more hassle and stress than its worth.I couldn’t afford to just drive “for fun” anymore. Just wasn’t high on my list of priorities. How long can you drive a car the same road, same route, until you get bored? The real world isn’t a track with technical turns. Also speed limits of 45–60 MPH means “take me to jail” speeds in just a few seconds of WOT in these cars. Is it worth it? A few seconds of rush for those kinds of consequences?Nevertheless, I tried.I tried to daily drive the Lambo, even taking it to everyday errands like grocery shopping and grabbing a cup of coffee (as pictured below). But this picture was in vain. What went into getting that car parked in a rather compact spot, setting off literally 3 or 4 car alarms (this V10 is LOUD). Having to perform a 5-point turn due to the long wheelbase.Even the Porsche is a Camry compared to this beast, especially in SoCal where 911s are dime a dozen.Every single time I would come home after driving the Lamb, I had this feeling of “wow, glad that’s over”.Exhaustion. Mental exhaustion from driving this beautiful machine that simply wasn’t made for the REAL world.Attention, traffic, not being able to go all the way, 5-point turns in tight parking lots, setting off car alarms, getting stares, looks, and whispers…In a vacuum, I’d drive it every single day till the wheels fall off. You bet your bottom dollar I’d do that. But alas, we don’t live in a vacuum. And neither do these cars.(Pictured: Me taking the 1,250 HP Lambo on a mundane coffee run. Was it worth it though?)
