As one of the respondents pointed out, most of us aren’t experiencing true disasters—no one dies or gets trapped in a flash floods or whatever. And those things do happen, just fortunately not to me. But I have had a couple of notably unpleasant camping experiences. One that sticks out:It was March in Oregon, and I was tired of winter and wanted to get out of the house and out of town. I convinced a friend to go camping with me, and we decided to go quite a bit south to camp at a spot where it was permitted to camp on the beach.We packed up and left fairly early on a Friday afternoon—early enough that we stopped of for lunch on the way at a restaurant that specialized in garlic. It was scrumptious, but we each probably ate 20 cloves.We arrive at our chosen beach, and walk over the dunes to discover Wind. Lots of wind. Big wind. Too much wind to allow us to set up our tents, since we couldn’t really stake them well in the shifting sands. OK. Plan B—-let’s find another campsite. We spend the next couple of hours driving up and down the coast, searching for an open campsite. Most of the campgrounds are closed because it’s really still winter. The ones that are open are full. We finally find a spot, just as darkness is starting to fall. And rain.We pitch our tent in a downpour. A literal downpour, which doesn’t happen that often in Oregon—it’s sort of a drizzly state, y’know? We try to start a fire—and somehow manage it. The flames sizzle and steam in the rain. We cook spaghetti—it’s raining hard enough that it’s hard to get the water to boil. And in the midst of this, our guests arrive.One of the reasons for choosing this section of the Oregon coast was that my friend was sort of being set up with a guy who lived nearby. So he and his friend show up, in the dark and in the rain, to eat our soggy spaghetti and see if there’s any spark. It’s way too wet for sparks of any sort—we’re all cold and miserable. Eventually they leave, after an hour and half or so of stilted conversation, and we retire to our tent and an early bedtime. Where we discover that we reek. Badly. Of garlic. But at least it’s both of us, right? What can we do? Nothing.The last insult arrived in the middle of the night, when I woke to discover myself lying in a pond—our campsite had flooded and we were soaked through. We huddle together on the “high ground” in the corner of the tent and wait for dawn.At dawn it’s no longer raining, and unpack pancake mix for our breakfast. We share a mutual look, and wordlessly pack our gear and head to town. We find a lovely cafe, with hot cocoa with peppermint schnapps and big wing chairs in front of a fire. And smile. And vow to save camping for the summer.

And although Cassadaga is interesting, if you don't know the neat things to see there you will look at the town and say "is this it?".If you REALLY want to experience Florida and blow off the theme parks for a day, there are some interesting things that most tourists miss. So here are a few things you will find off the beaten path.If you are looking for a relaxing day and don't mind putting a little effort down, take a visit to the West Orange Trail and cycle your way through historic downtown Winter Garden Florida. You can rent a bike from West Orange Trail Bikes and Blades at the Killarney Trailhead and ride a short distance east towards the canopy of old Florida oaks that make up the town of Oakland (do I need to tell you how it got its name LOL). Once you have enjoyed that, continue to meander your way down into Winter Garden where you will cycle through the middle of town. I recommend a relaxing lunch at Moon Cricket Grill.If you want to paddle your way through old Florida, it will be a longer drive but I would recommend a visit to Wekiwa Springs State Park in Seminole County. There you can swim in the springs or bask in the Florida sun while the young 'uns splash, swim and search for the pre-historic shark's teeth that are pushed up from the springs. You can also rent a canoe or kayak and travel up the Wekiva River enjoying the natural state of the springs.If tubing is your thing, not too far up the road from Wekiwa Springs State Park is Kelly Park on Rock Springs. On your way up Kelly Park Road you will want to stop at one of the vendors and pick up tubes for the whole family. Then you can enjoy the 72 degree water as you tube casually down the springs. There is no kayaking or canoeing within the confines of Kelly Park. But if you travel just a little up the road from Kelly Park you will come across King's Landing where you can. Just a word of warning at both springs. Be aware of bugs and sunburn. Bring bug repellent and sun screen.The Cocoa Beach Pier at sunriseA trip to the beach should always be a part of any Florida vacation but is one that seems to be missed when it is a theme park trip. There are all the normal places most in America hit, like Daytona Beach (The World's Most Famous Beach). But if you want to step off the beaten path a bit try a trip to Cocoa Beach for a day. There is no driving on the beach so the young 'uns will be safe every place but the parking lot.The great thing about Cocoa Beach is it is a straight drive up SR 528 (The Beachline) to get there. And while you are there, you can stop at Ron Jon's Surf Shop which is an attraction in itself. If you want to take surfing lessons and the waves are good enough to do that, stop by The Cocoa Beach Surf Co. If you are hungry while you are there I HIGHLY recommend a stop at the Shark Pit Bar and Grill to lunch next to their legendary shark tank.If fishing is your thing and you have the young 'uns in tow, go to Jetty Park instead. There you can fish your day away while the kids wipe themselves out riding Boogie Boards among the waves. Boogie Boards are available for rental. Make sure you have a Fishing Permit before you start fishing. A 3 day permit is $17 and can be had from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. For an enjoyable meal while you are there, I would recommend a stop at Grills Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar. I personally love their Smoke N Fish Dip for an appetizer. It is a locals hang-out so keep that in mind as it can get busy. If you are lucky while there (or hit it on a Sunday at around 4 pm), you might get to wave at the cruise ships as they leave Port Canaveral for the Caribbean Islands...Hopefully this gives you some food for thought.
