Are there employers who actively are open to hiring people on the Asperger's spectrum, making use of their characteristics of intense concentration, analytical task-orientation and unshakable fidelity?I believe there are a couple, tech companies IIRC, mostly in the EU/UK.There are certainly some career fields that are nicely HFA/Aspie friendly - if you can get past HR and into the job.Sterile Processing (cleaning, maintaining, sterilizing and inventory control of surgical instruments) is one that I recently found and wish I had found 26 years ago when I was discharged from the Army. I'd have never gone into University Debt and probably head up a hospital department by now. It's straight forward, moderately technical, detailed, easy (and appropriate) to get obsessive in, and generally let alone by the rest of the perioperative staff (no nurse/surg-tech/surgeon drama). The training for Certification is simple enough, and relatively inexpensive, even through the online course from Purdue. (Not absolutely necessary, but it makes taking the IAHCSMM test easier. I had 18 months to certify. Did it in 8. The test was supposed to take 3 hours. I did it in 1.)It's a super important job and way understaffed and under the radar in most hospitals - making it a good place to become an absolute expert in the tech and invaluable to the Surgery department/Hospital.

Which one?In the US there are two certifying agencies, IAHCSMM and CBSPD.IAHCSMM is the larger and more recogned of the two, and is politically active in promoting Sterile Processing as a professional career field that shouldn't be relegated to the dungeon under the hospital.I took the IAHCSMM CRCST test within eight months of starting the job orientation and passed with relative ease. Ditto for the CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocesor) and CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) the following year.The tests are as easy as your willingness to pay attention and focus on the details of the job. You don't really even need to take a “course” for certification, though I do recommend the Purdue Extension online course backed by IAHCSMM.Remember, this is Certificate, not a degree, and the coursework and Tests reflect that you probably don't have advanced secondary education. (I did, and was also an EMT, so I already had 90% of the terminology down on day 1, but you don't need to.)My co-worker from Morocco took the CBSPD test (our Hospital does not mandate which certifier is used) and passed it the first time, language issues and all.So, in the end, it's really not that hard to get certified, and is definitely worth your time as more and more Hospitals are recognising the legal importance of certification.

In the US, it’s the Sterile Processing Department. Their technicians clean, sterilize, inspect and prepare surgical instrument trays for surgery. Power equipment and other implants are also maintained by sterile processing technicians. Generally, the Sterile Processing Manager will be responsible for ordering replacement instruments or implants. These men and women work in the hospitals and surgery centers.Many Sterile Processing Technicians are certified after taking and passing C.S.P.D.T. course and tests. IAHCSMM and other organizations and some schools offer it. It’s a decent paying job with growth opportunities.
