The answer is to grow with it. In business, you have to adapt or die, so to speak.Find ways to offer more value over what your competitors offer. Value comes in many forms such as faster service, better quality, competitive pricing, more convenience, offering more services/options, better relationship building with your customers, etc. The list is very long…The key thing is to understand that just because your business model worked before, that doesn't mean it will continue to work. A small business should always be working to improve their business model, not waiting for competition to come around before they do it. The first day you stop trying to add value to your business and start to coast is the first day of the downhill slope of your business. You can never stop innovating.Be in front of your competition, not behind it. An entrepeneur's work is never done.Hope that helps!

To begin with I will say that it depends upon your outlook towards life and your expectations from the job. Everyone has his/her own reason for joining armed forces in general and the Coast Guard in particular. You must know yours.If you are hungry for adventure, don't mind uncertainty in life and want to live a life that is far from routine, you will enjoy to be in Coast Guard.The life of a coasty is tough. One spends a long time at sea. It is not a 9 to 5 job. You are on job 24X7! Coast Guard is like a police station, fire brigade and emergency medical service rolled in one! No one but the Coast Guard has ability to operate at sea. Navy is tasked to fight a war and is engaged in practising and training. Saving lives, enforcing law, protecting environment and assisting fishermen, scientists, customs and police, are some of the Coast Guard tasks. Often we are the first responders to disasters.One has to accept sea sickness as part of life! Sleep if you get it at all is at a premium. You don't get to see your family often. No festivals at home!You don a handsome uniform, but the price you and your family has to pay is huge.If you go with passion, then it is a very rewarding life. One saves lives, catch smugglers and poachers. You are always on look out for terrorists. Any disaster and you are at site. Adventure is routine, day to day work.Your family has to learn to deal with their own problems without you and help others too..I retired after serving for 26 years of my life in Coast Guard and loved every day of it.If you have it in you.... you will love it too!Written Jun 29, 2015 •

I was working at a high end restaurant, it was Saturday afternoon towards the end of my shift and I had plans for Saturday night. I was ready to close out my tables and get home.A man came in alone, mid thirties, sat at a table for four facing the ocean. He was in a t-shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals. I had the option of giving up the table to finish my shift and go home but I figured he would be low maintenance, probably only be there for 20 minutes and even if he just ordered a salad and a water I would still make a quick easy 5 bucks.He sat, he ordered an appetizer and a water. Easy peazy.A friend joined him. They ordered a couple cocktails off of the list and another app.A professionally dressed woman joined them. They ordered a few more cocktails and a couple more apps.Then some good news came through, he had just closed on his multi-million dollar house down the street. (I was working at a restaurant on a very expensive island off the coast of South Florida).The woman who joined them was his Realtor.To celebrate, they ordered a $3,500 bottle of Bordeaux.They stayed. They drank. They ordered about $800 worth of lobster, stone claws, and steak.The bill came to $4,500. He tipped me $2,000 and raved about my service to anyone who would listen.Since he now had a place down the street, he came in often. He would ask for me every time. Every visit after his first appearance he spent about $30. He would order one cocktail and a half portion of his favorite pasta dish (which we didn’t offer, but tip me $2k once and I’ll find a way). He would tip 20% on his credit card and leave me $50 in cash if he was alone or $100 if he brought a guest.Any body in a seat is a good body. Someone sitting down to spend $5 or $10 is better than an empty seat.You never know who that person is or what their value will be over time. Treat everyone like they’re a big spender.Even if they don’t have the money to be there, they’re splitting an entree and having water, but they wanted to celebrate something in a nice location. Maybe they’ve saved to spend an anniversary or birthday there. Give them the best experience of their life.
