So I will dumb it down.If you see a dude dragging his wounded out of the fight to strictly perform their duties as a medic you do not kill them.Similarly, if you see a truck or a helicopter with a big red cross, or other identifying features to signify a medical unit, and they are on the scene to strictly perform medical duties then you do not shoot it down.Now…If you see that medic dragging their wounded to do their medic thing, then come back to shoot you, or they shoot you first THEN do their medic thing, now they pose a threat to you. If you don't kill them, somebody else will.Similarly, if you see a truck with a medical insignia and its hauling some serious firepower, and its operator is employing the usage of said firepower to kill you, they pose a threat. Kill them. It's the same when you see a medical helicopter and their door gunner is unloading on you. Kill that shit.To kill a medic or destroy a medical vehicle who are easily identifiable and is on scene to strictly perform medical duties and does not pose an additional threat would indeed constitute a war crime.*edit*Thanks for the 5.4k upvotes. Did soldiers avoid shooting at medics?
No. I was a medic during the Vietnam war and none of us wore the Red Cross symbol because the North Vietnamese knew that shooting a unit’s medic and officers was the best way to demoralize and break an American unit. Of course, the Geneva Convention says that you are not supposed to shoot medics, but, guess what, the Geneva Convention is not uppermost in the minds of most soldiers in a war.Gary Jackson

When I was 7 or 8, I broke my arm when I fell off the monkey bars on a jungle gym.My dad is a doctor, so after we got an X-ray to confirm that my arm was in fact broken, he decided that he would put a cast on me himself.One day after school, he took me to the clinic where he worked, sat me down on an exam table, and put a cast on my right arm.(Yes, it really was neon pink.)Once he was finished, he stepped back and asked me, “How does it feel?”I responded, “It feels fine, but it’s on the wrong arm! It’s my left arm that hurts!”Yep. My dad put a cast on the wrong arm.After a minute of laughing, he cut the cast off and put on a new one.On the correct arm this time.It only took him two tries.
