I used to have a work-from-home job assisting customers with online banking.Our online bill pay service caused a fair amount of customer consternation because some payees didn't have an electronic relationship with our bank, so we’d have to send a paper check even though the customer submitted the bill payment via the website. That led to balancing issues, because customers expected the amount to be deducted immediately, but the payment wasn't actually taken out of the account until the check worked its way through the mail and the payee cashed it.An older gentleman called one morning about this issue, and I knew the call was going to be a bad within the first 30 seconds. He saw the balance discrepancy and said “Now fix it before you piss me off.”Fine. I’ve got thick skin and I know that online banking is intimidating for a lot of senior citizens, so I shook it off. I explained that some of his payees had to be paid via paper check, so he asked me to go through the payees and tell him the dates the checks were mailed.I didn't even get through the first one before he blew another gasket. I said “On March 3rd, we sent-”Then he cut me off and said “Now wait a god damned minute! That's not your money you're sending. It's my money from MY account!” Then he demanded a supervisor.That irked me, but I kept my voice level and told him that I wasn't going to get a supervisor over a figure of speech. We both knew we were talking about his money. I went through all of his transactions, and forgot about the call.About a week later, I went to log in at the beginning of my shift and my password wouldn't take. I called the number we had for work-at-home access issues. They gave me a ticket number and said someone would call me back. The bank called about an hour later, but it wasn't someone from IT. It was the VP of Operations. As luck would have it, the guy who was angry about the online bill pay was the retired CFO. He and the Ops VP were friends, so the VP fired me at his request.I was told that I had to return the computer immediately. Any delay could constitute theft of company property. So I loaded up my computer and headed to the office.No one had told reception about my termination, so the receptionist had to call my immediate supervisor. My immediate supervisor had only been with the company for three weeks at that point and she didn't know about my termination because she'd been doing her orientation and she didn't have access to all the systems.So I got to sit there for the better part of an hour holding my work computer on my lap while my supervisor and the receptionist played phone tag with the Ops VP, who was on his way to visit one of the branch offices in another state. At least a dozen people walked through the lobby while I waited, which added to the humiliation. They finally tracked the VP down and he confirmed the termination.But this tale of woe has a happy ending. I got a better-paying job at another bank. The Ops VP was fired about a year later after he hit a parked car while driving drunk, and the retired CFO who got me fired had a massive heart attack and died about two months after my dismissal.It makes me wonder if I should convert to Hinduism. They might be onto something with that whole ‘karma’ concept.
