I will comment on just one point. I have long been writing that the sari is on its way out as a normal, everyday wear. Sales are rising, and I think even per capita sales are rising. However, wear-hours are declining, and the saris are sitting in most cupboards for special use.As I see it, around 1920, the sari emerged as symbol of wide-spread use, even in places like Rajasthan and Punjab, where it was not normal, everyday wear. And, the Bengali ulta palla style of wearing was an indication of rising wealth. It said that the family’s women don’t need to work so much with their hands - as the pallu style is not designed to leave the hands free,Later, women - as women who were Air India hostesses - learned to overcome the problem with judicious use of pins. That was more than 50 years ago.Today, Hindi movies - I don’t know about other movies - rarely show the lead actress in a conventional sari. And airlines other than Air-India don’t use saris.So, it’s no surprise that younger women buy saris - but they are not exclusive wear, as they were for married women several decades ago.In 2020, we will have seen a 100-year run for the sari. It will still be bought in large numbers and for high prices, but wear-hours will continue to decline in the next 20 years.Off-topicMany of you on Quora follow me and upvote my answers. Though I have never been on the admission committee myself, I have been involved in a couple of casual chit-chats with my grad school advisors which enlightened me on what are the most important criteria for choosing an applicant.The first and the foremost criteria is GPA and it matters much more than you think. My adviser clearly told me that he used GPA as a primary filter to screen applications. When I say GPA, you don’t necessarily have to be the top of your class (though it’s great if you are), but don’t have a GPA that would clearly be considered ‘sub-par’ or low. When I think about it, it kind of makes sense because if you didn’t spend the effort necessary to maintain decent grades, what’s to say that you will put your heart and soul into graduate studies? GPA is also a quantitative metric unlike other parts of the application such as SOP, LORs etc which are qualitative. I think subconsciously, our brain tends to prefer quantitative metrics over qualitative ones just because they make decisions easier. Low GPA definitely hurts your credibility and is only compensated by an otherwise stellar profile.The next important factor is coursework. This was a surprise for me, because I didn’t think it was very relevant while I was applying. Basically, what my advisor did was that he looked at the transcripts provided in the application and reviewed the applicant’s grades in all coursework that was relevant to their field of specialization. This was to make sure that the student’s fundamentals were strong. For example, my bachelor’s degree was in Electrical Engineering and I was applying to Power and Energy Systems, so he went through my grades in all courses related to generation, transmission and distribution of energy. If an applicant had a good grade overall but poor grades in important courses, this was a red flag and they would be immediately rejected.Undergrad college comes after this. Your alma mater does receive some brownie points here. Profiles from well recognized universities from various countries such as IITs, NITs from India, Tsinghua from China etc. received preference over other profiles. However this served only as a tie breaker given two profiles were relatively similar in the first two aspects. My professor would ask me about various universities in India that he hadn’t heard of while reviewing applications. This is how our discussions about the admission process started in the first place. An applicant from a not so known university still got a chance at an interview with him as long as they had decent grades and had taken a good selection of coursework.Apart from these, he’d also look at the research papers published by the students. Most applicants don’t have a stellar research profile in their undergrad. So having a publication in a renowned journal is a good way to stand out from the crowd. Your SOP and LORs are important as well. The SOP is used to get a general idea of the student and to evaluate if they’d be a good fit for the grad school culture. LORs are an attestation of your qualities from a third person’s point of view.Finally, my advisor gave mere look into GRE and TOEFL scores to see the proficiency of the applicant in English but I don't think it was a decisive factor.Hope this shed some light on what you should focus on for your application. To find all the details of how to apply to graduate school, google “owl statement of purpose”.When I look at an applicant, I am trying to subjectively evaluate their potential to work at the research level, original research level of PhD applicants, and then compare them to the other applicants in my research area which happens to be specializations in Computer Science that I am currently pursuing. I do not look at other research areas which I leave to my fellow members of the admittance committee. What I am looking for is the best fit to my current research efforts. I do not recommend targeting professors since they may not have an opening when you are being consider.
