Discuss the causes and consequences of the above.I wrote about how globalization implied global expansion of the supply chain, how consumerism in the developed countries was fed by cheap labor from countries like India and China. But as a fast growing economy, India has increasing consumerism as well, with a more educated and prosperous middle class, about how India has become both a cheap labor country along with a great consumer society-gave example of Amazon- but said that the new middle class still didn't spend as extensively, because they haven't forgotten what lesser times were.PI:There were three members, a slightly aged person, another in his 30s-40s and a middle aged woman. All three of them were really jovial. I went in after being called by the lady. Let the lady be L1, and the men be M1 and M2. M2 was browsing the laptop as I walked in and didn't take much notice.L1: What is wrong with your tie?G: sir, the thinner end of the tie is longer than the broader end.M1: (laughing)So is that right? Or is that a new sense of fashion?G: Sir, I tied it with the help of a YouTube video. I think that it went wrong somewhere.(Everybody laughing)L1: Do you think a tie is necessary?G: Ma'am, I think it gives a formal appearance.L1: Oh, but it's really okay. We look to undertake maintenance at the plant or if necessary, undertake it's overhaul.M1: Are you alone in this?G: no sir, I have 6 officers in my department who take care of two crude units and a catalytic cracking unit. We are one among seven Areas which undertake maintenance in the entire refinery-L1: is this regular plant maintenance?G: yes ma'am, the problems arise on a day to day basis.M1: so what is typical day at office like?G: We plan ahead for the scheduled jobs the evening before. When we come to the office, we check our notifications on ERP software like SAP and look for any emergency jobs. We communicate with the operations department and undertake maintenance jobs which are of high priority along with the pre prepared schedule.L1: Is there any non regular maintenance?G1: Talking about rotary equipment, we have compressors and turbines which are central to the running of the plants. When they undergo maintenance issues, we identify the problems and try and resolve them. Sometimes, we take the help of original equipment manufacturers like BHEL to resolve these issues. We also have to procure spares for such equipment and ensure that they are not down.L1: Are there any instances where you had to handle such emergencies?G: Having had worked at the plant for just about an year, I'm not very senior in terms of experience. There was a compressor called RC1B which failed at a time when my superiors were absent. I, along with a technician, could trace the line from where there was the flue gas loss and try and repair the seal trap with help from the OEM.L1: So isn't there a system where everything can be monitored from?G: There is a panel from where the plant is operated, but since the compressor was 40 years old, it did not have a flow meter in the particular line, which made it difficult for us.L1: Doesn't that lead to a safety risk?G: No ma'am. There are several trip mechanisms which shut down the compressor and then the plant, if anything untoward were to happen.L1: What is the cost of such a shutdown?G: It would run into crores, ma'am.L1: What is the cost of this compressor?G: It would take about 10-12 crores to replace such a compressor.L1: Isn't Kochi refinery new?G: No ma'am, it was established in the 1960s. However, there has been an integrated refinery expansion project, which has added capacity-L1: Oh okay. So tell me, if this was another place, shouldn't they have replaced the compressor?G: If it were to be designed in an extremely foolproof manner, a compressor replacement would probably should've taken place. However, there was a RLA study that was undertaken by BHEL and it was certified to run for another 5 years.L1: If you were in that position, would you have taken the decision to buy a new compressor?G: Ma'am, I would look at the possibilities, but I would suggest changing the system to a dry gas seal system instead of the current wet gas seal system. (Explained how a dry gas seal works and how it would be cost efficient).M2: Did you write your own SOP-?G: (smiling) yes sir.M2: So tell me, what does this sentence mean? " During the course of my work, the profound business implications of seemingly simple technical activities crystallized my inclination towards management education into a strong will to understand the perspective that optimizes field activities, integrating them into a cohesive whole. "G: Sir, when I was writing this sentence, I was thinking of the various instances when even simple mechanical activities had a great impact. For instance, the plant undergoes periodic turnaround activities, where you have to undertake a great deal of maintenance activities within a very short duration. In one such activity, I was assigned a job that was on the critical path of the duration of the shutdown. When we completed the activity well before time, we received praise, praise that I thought at that point of time was unwarranted, because all we were doing was our job. However, when I later found out that one day of plant downage cost the company 2 crores, and that getting the plant up on time meant that diesel would be supplied to the state, enabling fuel availability throughout the state, I got a brief idea about how simple technical activities could have profound business implications. That was when I felt a need to understand the larger working of the company and embraced my proclivity towards an MBA.L1: So BPCL is now a Maharatna.G: Yes ma'am, it attained the status in April last year.L1: So how does a company become a Maharatna?G: In order to become a Maharatna,a company needs to have an average profit greater than 5000 crores over the last 3 years.L1: So what was the profit this year?G: 8040 croresL1: And the turnover?G: 2.43 lakh crores.L1: So what percent profit is that?G: (they gave me a paper and pen- I used that and said) Around 3% ma'am.L1: Do other companies like reliance fare better?G: Yes Ma'am, Reliance, whose market to abroad countries mostly, have a Gross Refinery Margin of about 11$ per barrel while we are at 8$/barrel.M2: Why do you think that is so?G: In the industry, if you can take heavier products and convert them into lighter ones, there is immense profit. Reliance has invested in technology that enable it to process the worst kinds of crudes, ones with extremely high sulphur percentages, thus reducing their raw material cost.L1: So you think it's necessary for the government to operate an industry with just 3% profit?G: Yes ma'am. The industry employs enormous number of individuals, and fuels the nation. When the government started this in the 1960s, there was a need for companies that provide for the nation's energy needs-L1: But that was when we were on a public sector policy. What about now? Shouldn't we let the private sector take care of it?G: No ma'am, the oil CPSEs contribute the most to the government's earnings from CPSEs. They account for more than 35% of the total revenue from CPSEs. Hence, it is beneficial for the government to run these enterprises.M1: So what do you want to do after an MBA?G: Like I've written in my SOP, my current job, though extremely valuable in terms of the experience that I'm gaining-M1: No. I don't want why MBA? What will you do after an MBA. Tell me an unprepared answer.G: I would like to solve problems as to where a particular company should invest, what it's future policies should be to sustain in the market-M1: So what sector do you want to work in?G: I would consider the oil sector, because I have a little experience there, but these two years could probably open up a lot more options, where I could work on the strategy of any other sector. At this point of time, I do not have a complete idea about what strategy exactly is, but I think I'm inclined towards itL1: That seems like an honest answer.M2: So the government is planning to ban all petrol and Diesel cars by 2030. Where are all these petroleum industries going to go?G: Sir, first of all, as Nitin Gadkari said, they'd only be stopping production of new petrol/Diesel cars, a decision that is similar to the banning of pre BS IV vehicles last year. The cars and bikes would still exist in the market for another 5-10 years after that. In addition to that, the aviation sector is increasing rapidly. By 2022, we aim to be the biggest aviation market in the world, so the demand for ATF would significantly increase.L1: But how much is that? Isn't that only a small part of the current production?G: Yes ma'am, it's about 2.25MMTPA as compared to 15MMTPA that KR is now producing. However, there has also been investment in the PDPP products, a process that would give propylene derivatives and petrochemicals that are used in several businesses such as paints, plastics, sanitary pads, etc. This would open up new avenues.L1: So you need all this infrastructure to make derivatives?G: Yes ma'am. There was a compressor called RC1B which failed at a time when my superiors were absent. I, along with a technician, could trace the line from where there was the flue gas loss and try and repair the seal trap with help from the OEM.L1: So isn't there a system where everything can be monitored from?G: There is a panel from where the plant is operated, but since the compressor was 40 years old, it did not have a flow meter in the particular line, which made it difficult for us.L1: Doesn't that lead to a safety risk?G: No ma'am. There are several trip mechanisms which shut down the compressor and then the plant, if anything untoward were to happen.L1: What is the cost of such a shutdown?G: It would run into crores, ma'am.L1: What is the cost of this compressor?G: It would take about 10-12 crores to replace such a compressor.L1: Isn't Kochi refinery new?G: No ma'am, it was established in the 1960s. However, there has been an integrated refinery expansion project, which has added capacity-L1: Oh okay. So tell me, if this was another place, shouldn't they have replaced the compressor?G: If it were to be designed in an extremely foolproof manner, a compressor replacement would probably should've taken place. However, there was a RLA study that was undertaken by BHEL and it was certified to run for another 5 years.L1: If you were in that position, would you have taken the decision to buy a new compressor?G: Ma'am, I would look at the possibilities, but I would suggest changing the system to a dry gas seal system instead of the current wet gas seal system. (Explained how a dry gas seal works and how it would be cost efficient).M2: Did you write your own SOP-?G: (smiling) yes sir.M2: So tell me, what does this sentence mean? That was when I felt a need to understand the larger working of the company and embraced my proclivity towards an MBA.L1: So BPCL is now a Maharatna.G: Yes ma'am, it attained the status in April last year.L1: So how does a company become a Maharatna?G: In order to become a Maharatna,a company needs to have an average profit greater than 5000 crores over the last 3 years.L1: So what was the profit this year?G: 8040 croresL1: And the turnover?G: 2.43 lakh crores.L1: So what percent profit is that?G: (they gave me a paper and pen- I used that and said) Around 3% ma'am.L1: Do other companies like reliance fare better?G: Yes Ma'am, Reliance, whose market to abroad countries mostly, have a Gross Refinery Margin of about 11$ per barrel while we are at 8$/barrel.M2: Why do you think that is so?G: In the industry, if you can take heavier products and convert them into lighter ones, there is immense profit. Reliance has invested in technology that enable it to process the worst kinds of crudes, ones with extremely high sulphur percentages, thus reducing their raw material cost.L1: So you think it's necessary for the government to operate an industry with just 3% profit?G: Yes ma'am. The industry employs enormous number of individuals, and fuels the nation. When the government started this in the 1960s, there was a need for companies that provide for the nation's energy needs-F1: But that was when we were on a public sector policy. What about now? Shouldn't we let the private sector take care of it?G: No ma'am, the oil CPSEs contribute the most to the government's earnings from CPSEs. They account for more than 35% of the total revenue from CPSEs. Hence, it is beneficial for the government to run these enterprises.M1: So what do you want to do after an MBA?G: Like I've written in my SOP, my current job, though extremely valuable in terms of the experience that I'm gaining-M1: No. I don't want why MBA? What will you do after an MBA. Tell me an unprepared answer.G: I would like to solve problems as to where a particular company should invest, what it's future policies should be to sustain in the market-M1: So what sector do you want to work in?G: I would consider the oil sector, because I have a little experience there, but these two years could probably open up a lot more options, where I could work on the strategy of any other sector. At this point of time, I do not have a complete idea about what strategy exactly is, but I think I'm inclined towards itL1: That seems like an honest answer.M2: So the government is planning to ban all petrol and Diesel cars by 2030. Where are all these petroleum industries going to go?G: Sir, first of all, as Nitin Gadkari said, they'd only be stopping production of new petrol/Diesel cars, a decision that is similar to the banning of pre BS IV vehicles last year. The cars and bikes would still exist in the market for another 5-10 years after that. In addition to that, the aviation sector is increasing rapidly. By 2022, we aim to be the biggest aviation market in the world, so the demand for ATF would significantly increase.L1: But how much is that? Isn't that only a small part of the current production?G: Yes ma'am, it's about 2.25MMTPA as compared to 15MMTPA that KR is now producing. However, there has also been investment in the PDPP products, a process that would give propylene derivatives and petrochemicals that are used in several businesses such as paints, plastics, sanitary pads, etc. This would open up new avenues.L1: So you need all this infrastructure to make derivatives?G: Yes ma'am. The current lighter products are further processed to get petrochemicals.In addition to this, the government also promised to lend ISRO's Li Ion battery technology to the companies in the energy sector to make them competitive even in the case of ban on fossil fuels.M1: Thank you Ganesh, that will be all.G: Thank you sir.
