It might seem like a waste of time to some employers, but forming good relationships with your colleagues can help you get work done more smoothly, because you know who to talk to to solve a problem, you have some shared language to talk about the project, and your colleagues are more inclined to spend time to help you if they feel friendship with you.

What is it like to be discreetly wealthy?

My SO and I have no debt, our children’s educations are paid for and our retirement is securely financed. We both still work and plan to retire in 8–10 years with several million in the bank. My parents will also leave me a substantial amount, if they don’t spend it all on travel, which they seem bound and determined to do! (Good for them!)I will acknowledge that I was born on third base and didn’t hit a home run. My family provided all that I needed and I left college unencumbered by loans. My parents were frugal while I was growing up and largely still are, although they have built wealth through saving and investing and are now enjoying the fruits of their labor. I’m grateful for the lessons they taught me.My SO, on the other hand, grew up without much luxury. His father left school after the 3rd grade and worked at a factory as an adult. His mother did the same after the 7th and worked in a school cafeteria. He was accepted to college but his folks couldn’t afford it, so he put himself through community college and earned an associate’s degree in business administration. He has worked hard for everything he’s accomplished in life and work. I have tremendous respect for him.Although we come from radically different backgrounds, our values are very similar and we both think it is important to instill a strong work ethic in our respective kids and to help temper their attachment to material goods. Therefore, we minimize our financial resources to them, and try to teach them to balance enjoying life with financial responsibility by example. To continue building wealth, we pay ourselves first. Each month, we set aside agreed upon amounts for retirement and savings. The rest is then applied toward bills and what is left over is for fun and other household conveniences. Our lifestyle is comfortable but not lavish. We live in a nice home, but the cost of living in our area is very reasonable and our house cost around $350k. We own our cars outright, but will drive them for ten years before buying new ones. One big splurge we recently made was restoring my SOs first car, a ‘72 Chevy Nova. He paid for it himself when he was 16 and was so proud that he washed and waxed it so much he rubbed the paint off of it! The car means a lot to him. He estimated that it would cost roughly $35k, but the project went over budget.Mostly, though, we are thrifty and find more satisfaction in saving money than we do in spending it without restraint. Money isn’t a renewable resource and we don’t treat it as such. Date night, for example, is at a local chain and we try to go on Tuesday night for $3.00 pints, 1/2 off wine and $5.00 burgers. (Last night, we won $250 playing music bingo!) We don’t use dry cleaning and maintain our lawn ourselves. This spring we have a pretty major landscaping project planned, which we will DIY.This usually leaves us with extra spending money and we enjoy travel a lot. Often, we fly first class because we are upgraded, but we will seldom pay/use points for it, unless it is a lengthy flight. We have plenty of hotel points, too, so don’t have that expense. As a result, we don’t hold back when it comes to fun and food when we travel. Even so, if we are traveling by car, we will bring sandwiches and snacks bought at the grocery store rather than eating unhealthy and expensive junk food.Bargain hunting aside, it is a huge benefit not to have to worry about finances. Earlier this month, our hot water tank needed to be replaced and we simply replaced it without discussion of where the money would come from. Having money doesn’t create happiness - strong relationships does that - but it reduces stress immeasurably. The nicest part about being well off is being able to be generous. We give to charities focused on supporting single parents, children, animals, and the disabled and it always feels good to do that. Moreover, we can treat our friends and family well. I love shopping for a wedding or new baby or being able to take a friend to dinner and if a friend needs help, we have offered that as well.I’m grateful for the resources we have and that we have planned for our future. That being said, the most enormously successful investment we’ve made has been in our relationships with each other and the people surrounding us. There is a sacredness in the home we have created, happy and healthy children whirling at our feet as we share the burden of work and the sweetness of companionship.
