PDF Editor FAQ
What is the 'height' of your Civil Services (UPSC IAS) preparation?
Preparing for Civil Services Exam is a very long journey (at least, it became long for me after some repeat failures). But when the objective of taking this exam is clear, you are willing to go to any extent in order to succeed. It’s important that when one fails, one has to rise like a phoenix. In all such events, we test our true limits. We never realise that we are scripting history through all such actions. Only when we look back in the hindsight, we realise that those were very special times. These are some of the things that define my journey (obviously, not exhaustive):My social life died a million deaths: I was labelled as unwelcoming and unsocial by my friends. Trip to Goa? Friend’s birthday? Chitchat over phone? No. Krishan will always veto. Each passing minute had an opportunity cost and there was no time to waste (especially, in the time after office hours). The 10,000 Rs. Pact: Around 45 days before the mains examination this time, I resolved to write a test every day. I made an arrangement with a friend (Ayush Maiti ) that if in case I default, I will pay him Rs. 10,000/- that day. In fact, I ended up paying him the amount, not once, but twice.Travelling an hour to sit in the library every day: My home is an hour away from Old Rajinder Nagar. Before mains exam, when I took a leave of a month and half from my office and came back to Delhi, I felt the need of maintaining consistency. I took metro every morning at 8 AM to reach library by 9 AM. After slogging till 9:30 PM, I generally used to reach home by 10:30 PM. Each day, the same routine used to re-start. All the more, I had developed a knack of studying in the metro as well, howsoever crowded it was.Deactivating social media: Now I am not a social media buff. But, it was Quora that was the most difficult to abandon. For the entire period between Prelims and Mains this time, I was off Quora. Believe me, it was like a part of me that died.Putting my career in RBI at stake: I knew that taking a long leave before mains this time won’t look fine in my service record. There was all possibility that climbing up the ladder won’t have been easy. But, dream is a dream! For you (CSE), a thousand times over.No TV, please!: I didn’t allow an active dish connection for the past five years at my home. Now I have reached a point where I am convinced that I will never buy a TV ever in my life. It’s useless.Started living my Detailed Application Form (DAF) for the interview: I went to bookfairs and attended talks by my favourite authors (my hobby was reading). Also, I visited Philatelic museums, exhibitions, and talked to postmasters of random Post offices (another hobby was Philately). I read extensively on Netaji Subhas (my college) and RBI (my present organisation), so much so that I even saw random movies on Netaji and read detailed provisions of the RBI Act.The 10 question nudge: I sent my Detailed Application Form (DAF) to around 40–50 friends before the interview. I asked all of them (who came from different backgrounds), to send me at least ten non-obvious questions that they may ask me based on my profile. Interestingly, this proved very helpful. 204/275, it is. :)The Sanyasi mode: Made all possible efforts to do a pre-emptive strike on all distractions (internet, long phone calls, “friendships”). Despite the omnipresent Jio thing, I didn’t use a monthly data pack. Hence, I had to pay to use internet (thus, used it wisely). Kept my phone battery deliberately low to avoid long calls. The fourth phase: Now this is the most weird part. After my interview (the third and final phase of this exam), as I was waiting for my results, I unknowingly started to “touch wood” each time the mention of CSE results used to come (now this may look silly and superstitious). A friend (Naveen Kumar Singh) jokingly called it as the fourth and most important phase of my exam cycle and used to put me into a tight spot by deliberately talking about my success in the upcoming results at places where wood was hardest to find. So, touch wood, I made it.I didn’t have a Netflix or Amazon Prime account. Missed on watching Cricket every time. Skipped the college farewell. Didn’t take placements. There was always so much to lose.Today, looking back, one may wonder, whether this exam was worth the sacrifice. And I would categorically say, Yes, it was.Indeed, desperate times require desperate measures! :)क्या हार में क्या जीत में,किंचित नहीं भयभीत मैं,संधर्ष पथ पर जो मिले यह भी सही वह भी सही(I don’t fear either victory or loss. In the path of struggle, I am content with whatever I get)
