Also practices vary from one University to another):Getting admitted to Graduate Program in your choice of field by virtue of having it (preferably) as an (or one of) undergraduate majors.Having a GPA of close to 4.0 (of 4.0).Proven scholastic excellence by virtue of assisting in research projects, presenting work in the Poster Sessions of Professional Society meetingsFor foreign students, having obtained high GRE scores.Being excellent enough to get tuition exemption and a Teaching or Research Assistantship or other financial support for 5–6 years.Completing at least 72 (I did 81) Credit Hours of Required and elected Graduate-level courses, with GPA close to 4.0.Successfully passing a grilling written PhD Qualifying Exam (ours was a full 3-days/8 hours ea).PASSING these Quals establishes one as a Doctoral Candidate and not admission to the Graduate School. This is what distinguishes a PhD Candidate from PhD WannabesClock starts ticking. From this date, you have 5 years or less to submit a completed, approved and defended Dissertation to the Dean.Choosing an area of research.Drafting a few research proposals.Finding a Professor, as a Guide/Advisor, who is interested in any of them, and is willing to take you on as a protégé.Thesis Guide to have funds or get Grants to support you and your research.Write a final Proposal for Guide’s approval.Get Guide’s recommendations for a multi-member Thesis Advisory Committee. They can be inside or outside the UniversityGet their acceptance and approval of your research Proposal. Incorporate their comments.Submit to the Dean your Proposal, signed by the Dissertation Committee.Now, you are ready to start your research.Periodically meet with your Advisor.After completion of research, write a dissertation, with various chapters submitted in sequence, and then complete Thesis to your Advisor for his/her preliminary acceptance.At various stages in between, write and submit papers for publication in reputed journals.Present your work at Professional Society meetings.Modify draft Dissertation, as necessary, and submit it to the Committee members plus your Advisor.Schedule a Defense for your Thesis.Successfully complete it. And, hope your Committee puts a Seal of Approval.Edit/modify Dissertation.Upon Advisor’s final blessings, submit multiple copies printed and/or Digital versions, to the Dean's Office.Congratulations!!! We should write a paper based on this result”.5:00 PM: paper first draft completed, sends to supervisor again.6:00 PM: cycling, walking.7:00 PM: Reads about all the new research work in Astronomy.9:00 PM: Guide calls, says “Anshu, the draft is brilliant, we should submit this tomorrow without any editing.”10:00 PM: Back to room, reads *science-fiction,history, biography* books.11:00 PM: *Anshu sleeps peacefully because she had such a productive day*In this Universe:8:30 AM: wakes up, shouts at the alarm for not buzzing at time. misses the breakfast.9:30 AM: logs on to Facebook, quora, reddit, YouTube, scoopwhoop, storypick (yeah, start judging), whats app, etc.10:30 AM: Calls my sister, video chat with niece (Manya) for 1 hour, till the time some senior says, “Anshu we will kick you out of the office room, if you keep talking that loud”.12:00 Noon: Call from supervisor, “Anshu, I had asked you the solar images/spectra and other plots on Monday, it is Thursday today, what the hell is wrong with you.”5:00 PM: mails plots to supervisor.6:00 PM: logs on to Facebook, quora, reddit, YouTube, scoopwhoop, storypick again.9:00 PM: Angry supervisor calls, says “plots are not up to mark, If you have to survive in PhD, you really really have to work harder.
