You say your MIL took your child out of state without YOUR permission, but she DID have (or she claims to have) her son’s permission to have the child with her. But now, you say your MIL is refusing to give your child back. That’s a problem. That could be seen as kidnapping. Where exactly did she tell your husband she was taking the child and when did she say she would be bringing her back? Its quite simple. If you are the mother and you have custody of the child, all you have to do is go to the police in your town, with your driver’s license and your daughter’s legal birth certificate and tell them “This lady took my baby and while she had my husband’s permission at the time, she is now refusing to give my baby back to me. Make her give me back my child” and have the police escort you to wherever this psycho woman is and get your daughter back. I would then tell your husband that his mother is NOT to be left alone with your daughter again and indeed, she is not to be with your daughter AT ALL without you there to supervise.

Disagree about how to deal with the child. Your wife lays down a punishment you find too strict? Your husband gives permission for something you wouldn't allow? Keep quiet, bite your tongue. Discuss it privately and change the message to the child later if needed, but don't ever ever disagree about how to handle a child, in front of the child. Always, always present a united front. If a child is given any indication that they can play one against the other or divide and conquer, they will. It doesn't mean they're a bad child, or you're a bad parent, it's just human nature, and we'll all try it on if we can. Doesn't matter whether the child is 2, 12, 16... Do not ever disagree about how to deal with a child, in front of the child. I know, this is a terrible piece of writing, I've repeated the same thing again and again.
