Why didn’t Sweden go into an official lockdown, unlike other countries?

Thanks for the A2A.First of all, the Swedish Government does not have the constitutional authority to do any such thing. They can be granted such authority by Parliament, of course. In a very urgent crisis, this can be done in a matter of hours, or even after the fact, should circumstances so require. When the pandemic first hit, the relevant authorities issued a number of guidelines and restrictions. They amount basically to a lockdown but without having the force of law. It was estimated that some 80–90% of the population followed at least the majority of restrictions almost all of the time. (It should be noted, for instance, that while no law forced restaurants to close, some 80% closed anyway due to a complete lack of customers.) The Government also issued a few restrictions which they could issue and that had the force of law, such as banning gatherings of more than 500 people, soon restricted further to 50.By the time Parliament had gotten around to discussing whether the Government should be granted temporary power to enact a lockdown (IIRC, late March or early April), the Public Health Authority informed them that the spread was already diminishing, and that the healthcare services would not be overwhelmed. It would be a couple of weeks until this became obvious from official statistics, but they were right. So the powers were never granted, as a complete lockdown was not considered necessary; the restrictions enacted were enough. The development to date show that they judged correctly. Contrary to other European countries, our infection rates are going down. We have about 3 deaths per day, rolling average, and yesterday 21 people in ICU care (the country has some 800 places, temporarily expanded to 1,200 during April and May). Last week, the regular random testing of 2,500 people found zero active cases—so while testing of people with active symptoms of upper respiratory infections still find a number of cases daily, the general level of infection in the population is now too low to measure. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

What are some of the funniest “got fired” stories?

I have two funny stories, 5 years apart from each other. On my first job, I escalated through a series of positions in no time, had gone to many plants all over the world and had worked on a bunch of successful projects. When I got to the position of Production Manager, something changed in the company. There was a product transfer that had gone terribly wrong on the material planning side, and we were impacting customers. We had to work the production lines 24/7 with only two crews, so by the fourth week everyone was really tired, and there was no end in sight. The CEO was calling and getting daily briefs. He sent a professional bully to get the product out, but we were in such bad shape that all product was running on team driven trucks to keep 3 major customers running. On top of that my 6 month old daughter had a respiratory disease. So everything was in pretty bad shape. One Saturday morning, 6 a.m., as I was driving my mother to the airport, to then drive myself to work, I mentioned to her that I was going to quit next week because I simply couldn’t keep up with that type of pressure. That same night, at around 9 p.m. I left the plant to head home. I had a discussion with the professional bully as he did not realize our problem resided on the fact that we were stopping so much because we didn’t have materials. One hour later I received a call from the HR manager asking me not to go to work om Sunday, and telling me we would meet on Monday. And so on Monday morning he asked me to pick up my stuff, hand over my laptop and gave me a nice fat check worth 6 months of salary, telling me I was fired. He also told me he believed it was a bad idea to fire me, gave me recommendation letters and wished me the best. I took 3 months of vacations before taking another job. The HR manager quit that company a couple of months later. The next job was at a smaller company. I got to a point where I was controlling all the information in the ERP system, I was implementing a new production planning tool and was well regarded by everyone in the company, except for the Production Manager. I really could never figure out why. So when the need arose to cut back costs, he convinced the General Manager to include my name with 20 others to remove. So I got another nice fat check worth 6 months salary. And decided to take some time off. Things back at the plant started going downhill in my absence, and two weeks later the General Manager called me offering my job back. Half a year later he was let go. I stayed, and the Production Manager was my boss. The former General Manager joined another company, called me up and asked me to join him. So I am currently working at the third job in my life, and I’m wondering when will I have another big fat check.
