Congratulations!You haven't mentioned what offer you’ve received; I'm presuming you’ve made it through GATE, and this is, probably, your first job offer. You also haven't revealed much about your own background. My answer, therefore, will necessarily lack focus.ONGC has Basins, Assets, Field Services and Support Services.In Basins, the geo-scientists (geophysicists in particular) and E&T Engineers do get to work in field parties. Civil and Logistics guys may also get seconded. Work in field parties is tough and one has to rough it out. One ‘lives’ at the site-camps, often in the middle of no-where. One remains cut-off (for the duration one is at the site), and the only link with the outside world may well be just a tenacious sat-com link.The work involves sailing onboard seismic survey vessels (if offshore); or long arduous treks through thorn & bush and all kinds of difficult terrain (if onland).But, this doesn't imply that it's all work and no play. As dusk falls, bon fires can be lit and one may strum a guitar: City life was gettin’ us down, / So we spent a weekend out of town; / Pitched a tent on a patch of ground - / Down by the river. / Lit a fire and drank some wine / Put your jeans on top of mine; / Said ‘come in, the water’s fine’. / Down by the river.How often, so many people venture forth into the wilderness, looking to ‘get away from it all’. They pay good money to ‘trek’ in the hills; and often shell out a small fortune in buying all that fancy camping gear (from Decathlon or elsewhere) . So, you can see, offshore work - life is perfectly balanced (exactly 50 - 50). Onland, it could be rather skewed. While production may not be too strenuous, drilling isn't quite a walk in the park. Well Services too can be quite demanding - these assignments require hard physical labour (there’ll be times, when you'll wonder whether you are an officer or just another foot soldier). But, the experience (and the expertise) that you'll garner, will be priceless.Not all Mech/Elect Engineers posted offshore (or in onland field parties) are engaged on the core drilling, well services, or production assignments - some may be working on maintenance and upkeep of equipment and machinery. Civil Engineers are usually engaged in drill-site and approach road construction work. E&T guys in seismic field parties play the crucial role of making sure the geo-phones are in prime working order, while others of their ilk ‘man’ and ‘maintain’ the communication networks. Logistics blokes keep the wheels turning.Many engineers are assigned to Engineering Services. These guys are the ones who get all the expensive offshore platforms, sub-sea and cross-country pipelines, tank-farms, effluent treatment plants, terminals etc built. But, they don't do basic design work - they only get the construction contracts executed. More often than not, even the tender documents are prepared by EIL (Engineers India Ltd). The engineering and construction activities are undertaken by the likes of Larsen & Toubro; Punj Lloyd; Pestonji amongst Indian companies, and by the large Japanese and Korean conglomerates like Sumitomo; Samsung; Hyundai etc MacDormett are also very active in this field. Over the years, most ONGC engineers also acquire useful insights w/o actually doing much design work — their skills in drafting complex contact clauses, probably, trumps their engineering skills.Guys can also get posted in any of the various institutes like IRS, IDT, GEOPIC, KDMIPE etc; or in one of the two central workshops (at Baroda or Shibsagar); or at the process plants (at Uran or at Hazira) etc.Yet, many guys (including graduate engineers) end up in support services like HR (aka P&A); MM (aka S&P); F&A und so weiter. Needless to add, these are desk bound jobs, and often the commute to & from the office, could be more draining than the actual work one does.Regarding work-life balance, what can one say - a lot depends on the boss one gets. Some are easy - going (and they are the ones who are generally more effective); others can be royal ar**holes. If you have the misfortune of getting stuck with one of the latter kinds, then either grin & bare it; or seek and find another assignment (within or outside the Corporation). Yet, you need to understand that the conservative old-foggies (of my and earlier generations) have (mercifully) all retired - the new lot of bosses know and understand that the millennials won't put up with the bull crap, they themselves endured. Hence, hopefully, the new set of bosses will behave more reasonably.Regarding, IOCL and Power Grid Corp., both are excellent organisations, and I am sure you'll find fulfillment working for them. Just remember: ‘a bird in hand is worth two in the bush’. Make sure, while you are seeking better prospects, you don't miss the bus, altogether.All the very best.
Why do mechanical engineers have a low salary?
This answer has multiple layers to it therefore i will go point by point.Firstly, the studies at college is not sufficient to perform in real world environment at beginner's stage. You need to learn.Mechanical engg related fields make money by selling tangible goods like vehicles, steel slabs etc. which have a cost associated with themselves. To elaborate. let us compare a software which may cost 2 lac rupees & Tata's cheapest car Nano. The cost for both of them is near about same but to make that car you need 1 lac+ worth of material in form of its spare parts n all. But what do you need to make a software?Human capital and computer hardware. The office space and hardware doesn't cost too much when compared to a car factory. In software field the actual asset is the developer or s/w architect but in a mech field thousand crores of factory needs to be set up first and it takes a while to reach the break-even point after which, it becomes profitable.Also in mech field your experience (acquired by sincere work of course) is your asset. Your skill to maximize output from your subordinates without exploiting them will fetch you reward after 5-6 years in the mech field.In s/w engineering you have to keep evolving in order to excel and to be honest, it is bit tough than the mech field.Students often ignore those subjects during college that can fetch them real high paying jobs. On such subject is FEA (Finite Element Analysis). In Madhya Pradesh, India from where i belong, this subject is treated just like we used to treat moral science during school.Students ignore coding and CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Drawing / Computer-aided manufacturing) related subjects which are quintessential.Nobody takes MS Excel seriously. Infact it is the best tool you should know in order to shine within your team.Ignorance towards the minor and major training: They should be done at an institution of repute but students treat them as outings.Minor and major projects they should be aligned to field where you wish to land.Non reliance over college TPO will take you places and will get you far better job than your colleagues.After all this you might be thinking why Computer Science, Electronics & Communication and Information Technology guys paid more instantly...the reason is:For CS: They have to learn coding and that is applied directly into product. Which means they start contributing to actual product during the first year of job itself.For EC: If they are working in S/w companies they are not doing what they were supposed to do. A mechie can easily pull off any IT company's interview too.If EC people go to Semiconductor companies they will earn much more.IT too; if they work in their related field, they will make more money.To summarize, i would say if you are being paid less you have not developed your resume as per the need of your field. And if you want to work in mech field but IT companies salary confuses you... believe me there comes a time after 7-8 years when every switch after (2-3 years) nearly doubles your package. But in the meantime you will have to perform.P.S. A true mechie always misses his subjects while working in a diff field.
What was the story of your journey to IITB?
Here is how it was for me:UKG to class 5th: studied in an okayish English medium school in Kanpur. Used to rank among top 10 in class. Screwed up a couple of times, but was doing well. Elder sister used to teach me. I was not at all a studious guy. I rather spent most of my day playing cricket and other games/sports with my friends.Class 6th - class 7th: school was changed to one of the best schools in Kanpur. Rank fell down from single digit to double digits. Percentage went down from 90+ to ~70. Didn’t care at all. Wasn’t a studious guy. The teachers in school and the residents of my society were so fed-up of me that my parents wanted to send me to hostel. I used to fight with my sister when she taught me. Enjoyed life like crazy. Played a lot of games. Broke some people’s heads. Messed up with teachers. Fought with classmates. I arguably had the best childhood.Class 8th - class 10th: sister got married when I was in class 8th. Responsibility of studying suddenly fell on me. Class teacher was fed-up with complaints against me. I used to spend most of my time either outside my class (due to a punishment) or on the floor of the class (again, due to a punishment) :P. She made me sit with the most sincere guy (call him A) in the class. We became good friends and the “peer group” effect started to impact me. I started becoming serious about my studies. By class 9th, I was among the toppers. It was 2010 and A’s brother had secured AIR 125 in IIT-JEE 2010 (now JEE Advanced). In 10th standard, the school took us on a visit to IIT Kanpur. Mesmerized by the beauty of campus, I made my mind that some day I will also come here. I became extremely serious in class 10th and I studied a lot. Ended up topping the school with 97.4% marks.Class 11th: started JEE preparation with the big dream of cracking IIT Kanpur. Got to know about IIT Bombay CSE from my class 11th Physics teacher. Learnt that only top 100 rankers are able to crack it (that was back in 2011 when the cutoff was around AIR 75). Changed the goal to a top 100 rank + IITB CSE. Performed well during class 11th, but still, I was not even close to a top 100 ranker’s performance.Class 12th (May 2012 - September 2012): got in touch with Manoj Sir - the teacher who changed the way I saw Physics. He taught me how to hit Physics problems with the most fundamental concepts rather than applying end-results/formulae. I applied his ideas not just in Physics, but also in Chemistry and Maths. This started producing good results and eventually I became extremely serious about JEE preparation.Class 12th (October 2012 - April 2013): FIITJEE AITS (test series) started. I performed well at the national level (1 and 2 digit ranks), but the scores were low because AITS is extremely tough. My ego got hit and I studied like crazy during these months. Maintained a top 50 rank in AITS consistently.April 2013 (the JEE Main time): Did well in the exam. 300+ was sure. 323/360 was icing on the cake. Cracked INPhO and INChO also.April 2013 - May 2013: Worked like crazy during this period. It was clear by this time that if I don’t screw up JEE and perform as I have been doing in AITS, a top 50 rank is sure.2nd June 2013: screwed up JEE due to a sudden change in pattern.3rd June 2013: got to know that it isn’t just me who screwed up. Relative performance was great and as per FIITJEE’s calculations I was getting a top 50 rank.21st June 2013: JEE results were announced, AIR 33 in JEE Advanced 2013.Counseling time: I filled 9 choices in the following order: IITB CS, IITD CS, IITK CS, IITB Elec, IITD Elec, IITK Elec, IITB Mech, IITD Mech, IITK Mech.
