My grandmother was a wealthy woman. She married two millionaires and outlived them both. My mother and brother assumed they would both be left a small fortune before their mother began her decline from dementia. In home care was overwhelmingly expensive but the best option for her to remain comfortable and in her Florida home (my mother and uncle both lived in Kentucky) My uncle, quickly realizing this wasn’t great for his inheritance, moved his family down to Florida.He moved to get his share while there was still a share to be had. He used her money to help purchase a home, three brand new vehicles and a new van for his tile business. He purchased many new antiques, new hearing aides and put in a pool, all with her money he convinced his mother to give him. Mind you, she had no mental capacity to be authorizing any of this.My mother was aware of the situation and tried to alert those in charge of my grandmothers finances. Angered, my uncle began harassing and threatening my mother. We were all concerned! He worked hard to confuse my grandmother by telling her horrible lies to make her hate my mom. He did everything he could to drive a wedge between them and sadly it worked. Once he had his mother all to himself, he plagiarized a new will for her, cutting my mother out. Thankfully, the new will was rejected due to my grandmothers mental state. When he started writing checks to cash for hundreds of dollars every week, my grandmothers power of attorney finally stepped in and froze her accounts.When the money stopped, my uncle would have nothing to do with his mother. He threatened my mother claiming this was all her fault and continued to smear her name to anyone who would listen.This all took place over several years. It took a massive toll on my mom to have to care for her mother, who basically hated her because of her brother. Heartbreaking.Interestingly, my uncle was diagnosed with cancer and despite everything, my mother came to his side and got him into a top cancer center that wound up saving his life. He wound up passing years later, relying on my mother who cared for him until his last breath.I don’t know what is more notable, the lengths he went to to feed his greed, or the incredible forgiveness she gave. Either way, witnessing this saga taught me a valuable lesson about human nature and greed.

It can be done very simply.The joint owner who is abroad can give the owner in Kentucky a Power of Attorney, solely for this purpose. The PoA nerds to be signed, witnesses and notarized.
