PDF Editor FAQ

What was the most unexpected knock you got on your door?

Knock on the door. Man standing there informs me that he used to live at my address. I recognized his name because the police had knocked on my door several times looking for him.Stammering he explains that he needs me to tell the police he still resides there because he is a sex offender and did not report his change of address, therefore a warrant had been issued for his arrest. My reply was to get the F*** off my porch and he'll no I am not lying to the police. Not long after I was summoned to court but I ended up just signing an affidavit stating I did not know him and he did not live at this address. He had been picked up on some other charge.

How would a white man be more privileged than a black woman living in the same trailer park?

Last April I went to the BMV (DMV in states that aren't Ohio) on the west side of Columbus to renew my registration. I had just moved to my apartment, didn't have any bills or a copy of the lease yet, as I had just moved, but I needed to renew and those documents are required if a license does not reflect the change of address. The couple in front of me, a lovely black couple that was obviously from Africa originally, walked up to the counter. They had just moved to Columbus from Dayton a week prior, and didn't have any authorized documentation to substantiate the relocation, but it was the wife's birthday and they needed to renew their registration."I'm sorry ma'am, but there's nothing we can do for you. Unless you bring a utility bill or a copy of your lease, I can't verify your change of address."There's nothing racist or incorrect about that. The regulations are in place for very good reasons, and so I knew I would walk to the counter, greet the clerk, and upon describing my plight, be asked to leave…"Oh, sweetie, I understand! Sometimes the timing just doesn't work out for ya'! I'll go ahead and check the box that you showed me an electric bill. Just sign here…"No, this isn't a hypothetical. This was last April at the Westpoint BMV in Columbus, OH. The same clerk, the same problem with myself and that lovely couple. The rule was broken. They were not discriminated against, but I was certainly discriminated for. That's privilege. It's realizing that, had they not been directly in front of me and had I not talked to them for the half hour in line, I would have been treated to this surprise figuring it was what everyone experienced.I don't have to think about my applications getting turned away from employers because of my name.I can go into a car dealership and tell the sales staff exactly what I intend to pay, and that's the end of it. The black woman may be ignored at the first three dealerships, and at the fourth have no bargaining power. But that day, I was treated unfairly. I was gifted a favor I didn't deserve, and I saw it through such an odd light. She didn't do it out of inherent racism. She did it as a kind gesture. It was just the kind of gesture I wouldn't have gotten had I been anything but white.

What did someone do or say at the bank that made you say, “You gotta be kidding me!”?

Back in the early 80s I banked with Barclay’s Bank in the UK. I don’t really know why them - I think when I decided to open a bank account it was a case of picking one at random. Barclays advertised with the slogan “You’re better off talking to Barclay’s”.A few years later I moved from one side of the country to the other. It was an exciting time and I moved out of my parents’ home and into my first very own. There was a lot to do, but one of the small chores was to write to the bank to let them know my change of address. This was in the days before internet or email, so things were done by telephone, fax and letter. For a change of address it needed to be in writing.Well, nothing happened. My parents continued to receive my statements, chequebooks and payment slips. This was inconvenient, so I wrote to them again, same request. No change. This went on for perhaps a year. You’ve got to be kidding me! It wasn’t a big deal in some ways — I could check my balance at an ATM and also pay stuff in that way, using cheques if I had to. But eventually I got a bit pissed off with this - a simple change of address, how hard can it be?At the time I had recently been introduced to the first Mac computer, and the revolutionary new thing, “desktop publishing”. So I decided to press it into use to send them a letter which was a bit more likely to get their attention.I reproduced their logo using MacPaint as accurately as I could (given that MacPaint could only produce 72dpi black and white images it was far from a perfect match, but in those days still very impressive). Instead of “Barclays” I changed the name of the bank to “Brickwalls”, and with the slogan “You’re better off talking to Brickwalls*”.The letter itself was a bit of a rant to be honest, and owed something to Monty Python’s satire of mindless bureaucracy (“if you want something done in this country you have to complain until you’re blue in the mouth!”).However, it had the desired effect. Suddenly my statements started arriving at my new address, and I received a personal apology for not having done it sooner. Attached to the official letter was a hand-written note saying that my letter had received a huge laugh in the office and was now pinned up on the company noticeboard. They were particularly impressed with the logo graphics and subversion of their slogan. “Unofficially, what a cracking letter!” was the summary judgement. Here’s an ad using that slogan from slightly later in the 80s. Actually, for a bank ad it’s not bad at all, now I come to see it again after all these years!*Edit: just in case the phrase isn’t familiar, in Britain we often say “I might as well be talking to a brick wall!” when somebody isn’t listening or doesn’t take your advice.
