PDF Editor FAQ

How was it possible for NASA to live broadcast the moon landings worldwide in 1969 when we struggle with live broadcasts today?

Q: How was it possible for NASA to live broadcast the moon landings worldwide in 1969 when we struggle with live broadcasts today?Simple. All they had to do was:Pay Westinghouse and RCA a large sum of money to develop TV cameras small enough to fly aboard the spacecraft in an era when the typical studio camera weighed almost as much as a man and to operate within laughably tight power and bandwidth limitations. Westinghouse did this by using brand new technology, settling for a non-standard low frame rate and resolution, and taking certain technical shortcuts, some of which make the image quality less than what it might have been, but which contributed to the development of the home camcorder a few years later.Pay RCA a similarly large sum of money to develop transfer equipment capable of reading the non-standard signal (broadcast back to Earth as part of the spacecraft’s S-band data transmission, not on the TV band) and convert it to NTSC format for transmission to the networks. The conversion of one analog signal format to another using the technology of the time required the invention of a primitive forerunner of the DVR (which would lead to commercial instant replay a few years later) and the expedient of “filming” off a specially made high brightness TV screen using a standard studio camera.Pay a similarly large sum of money to set up or acquire transmission links back to Houston. Where today you’d just use the Internet and twenty years ago you’d lease a T1 line, NASA had to build the network from scratch.Pay many millions more to build or lease and equip the facilities of what is now called the Manned Spaceflight Network, using large parabolic dish antennas spaced around the world to provide continual coverage as the Earth turned and redundant coverage (which came in handy), with supplemental ARIA aircraft and ships to fill in gaps in coverage.Plan the entire mission months in advance so that, by launching from Florida within a certain window, they would arrive at key mission objectives with the sun in a suitable position to see landmarks and targets clearly and without having the sun in their eyes, and then preplanning TV shots to avoid shooting into the sun and destroying the camera (though that happened once anyway) or shooting under lighting conditions beyond the range of the primitive camera.Invent large, collapsible parabolic S-band antennas that could be carried by the Service module and LM, and that could be deployed on the lunar surface for improved signal strength.Plan time into the flight plan in which to test the TV equipment ahead of the landing. For example, during Apollo 11, about ten and a half hours after launch, right before the astronauts went to sleep, Houston asked them to shoot about ten minutes of basically anything just to exercise all the moving parts needed to get the signal back home and out to the networks.Design and test a camera mount that would allow a camera mounted outside in a storage locker to be easily and reliably deployed by the first astronaut to step outside and then televise his progress down the ladder.Design and test a pan/tilt head that would allow a camera mounted on a tripod (or later, a lunar rover) to be controlled remotely from Houston.Plan, test, practice, execute. In short, by planning every detail and paying a lot of money. Transmitting a signal from the moon to the Earth is not hard, there’s nothing to get in the way except Earth’s atmosphere. S-Band was used because it could penetrate the atmosphere, but getting the signal broadcast around the world was much harder than getting it back from the moon—of course, there was already some infrastructure in place for that.If you like space, you might like my free award-winning SciFi sampler.

Why don't we hear much about Blue Origin anymore, is SpaceX really that much more popular?

History shows that you should never call Jeff Bezos a fool or a liar.Jeff Bezos got a lot of derision when he wanted to make a online shopping network. He himself thought he had only a small chance of success. He’s now one of the richest men in the world. And using his own wallet and virtually no outside funding, he and his team at Blue Origin have developed a ready-to-fly suborbital tourism rocket, have built a massive rocket factory in Florida, and have secured a very significant engine contract that puts two launch interests at risk.Blue Origin has also shown that SpaceX is not the only company that knows how to build reusable and refurbishable rockets. Now, yes, the New Shepard spacecraft (and it is one, as it easily reaches the Karman Line) is only suborbital. It doesn’t come close to matching the capabilities of what SpaceX orbital rockets can do.But that’s not what it’s built for. It’s going to give joyrides to space. And profitably, I’m sure. This vehicle is fully tested and ready. All it awaits now is Blue Origin to open sales and launch times. Contrast that to other failed space launch initiatives such as XCOR and long-struggling suborbital competitor Virgin Galactic and their SpaceShipTwo.The problem with questions about Blue Origin and SpaceX is that people make false comparisons and contrasts without taking into account the business models or stated goals of the two companies.SpaceX’s mandate is to create a travel infrastructure to Mars. That’s it. Any work they do for NASA or commercially is to support their customer and finance themselves to get Starship/Super Heavy into production and operation.Blue Origin isn’t looking for popularity or commercial contracts just yet. Bezos is far more shrewd in not discussing what isn’t yet ready.Bezo’s goal is wholly different than SpaceX. He wants to open up Earth suborbital, orbital and lunar habitation and other commercial interests by providing cheaper travel means to space.Have you seen this building? It’s now sitting on the Florida coast near the Cape Canaveral launch facilities. This is a huge rocket factory, intended to build the New Glenn launch vehicle.New Glenn will be a staggeringly-huge rocket, nearly the size of the Apollo Saturn V rocket. It may be capable of launching more than anything currently available—and yes, that includes Falcon Heavy.Blue Origin also has leased Space Launch Complex 36 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, not far from the ULA and SpaceX launch complexes, for New Glenn flights.New Glenn’s booster will also be recoverable in the same way as the Falcon 9 boosters and Blue Origin’s suborbital booster.I speculate that New Glenn will push the SLS into cancellation if it flies as claimed. And if you think New Glenn isn’t coming, then you’re also thinking that ULA’s Vulcan will never fly.Because Blue Origin is completing development of the BE-4 methane/LOX booster engine, which will be used not only on the New Glenn but ULA’s Atlas V successor, the Vulcan. ULA is counting on Blue Origin’s engine technology. And as ULA is a central competitor to SpaceX, it would be stupid to rely on Blue Origin if they weren’t serious or capable of building that BE-4 engine.New Glenn itself may not be ready to fly until 2021. But history shows that Bezos makes good use of his money.Blue Origin is not out (yet) to impress or wow most of us as SpaceX tends to do. Blue Origin sees their rockets as the means, not the end. In that, they share a commonality with SpaceX.

What are my rights as a residential tenant in a commercial building?

If I am readying your question correctly, you have less rights.I understand your question to be something like this. If I rent an office or warehouse and live in it, what are my rights?Should this be the case you have a few problem that can get you at any time.zoning: should the municipality zoning department find out (could be a neighbor complaining) you can get a violation and would have to move.landlord: should the landlord find out by visiting the property, neighbor complaining, violation or other, you have a problem. You are in violation of your lease and the landlord can evict you with proper notification. Please note, there are some properties that are zoned “live/work” which would allow you to live and work in the same space but then you would not be in a “commercial” buildingEviction proceedings: While laws may vary, Florida residential and commercial properties have different eviction procedures. The last step in residential evictions is a 24 hour notice being posted and then the police transfer possession. In this manner the renter can remove their contents in the 24 hours if not already done. With a commercial eviction there is no notice. Once the case goes through the court the police set the date and time and transfer possession immediately. The landlord can work with the renter to collect their items a later date but are also withing their rights to simply have all contents removed and disposed of.Now, every case is different and if you have any legal questions you should speak with an attorney but if you plan on living in a place that it is not permitted, be careful as you have already started out in violation of your lease and a good basis for an eviction.
