PDF Editor FAQ

Who were the early Slavs? Do all Slavic people have the same ancestor? If not, who are the ancestors of different groups of Slavic people?

The results of genetic research can help us answer this question. While archealogical excavation and primary sources often leave us with theories, speculation and shifting narratives, scientific research on modern populations can give us some more concrete answers.A study was conducted that aimed to clarify Slavic origins and determine the relationship between modern Slavs and ancient indigenous populations. The results were posted in the Plos journal. The common textbook narrative of the Slavic ethnogenesis places the early Slavs in restricted areas either in eastern Europe or the steppes of Eurasia. Slavic migrants would fill the gap left by fleeing Germanic inhabitants of Central Europe, settling the lands of modern day Poles, Czechs etc.. This was the narrative that I also adhered to for a long time.Yet the genetic results of this study seem to go smack against this theory. Instead, they show that the Slavs are descended from firmly established indigenous European populations that inhabited widespread areas of North Central and Eastern Europe since the time of the Bronze age. This is especially true of matrilineal lineages.“Taken together, the time of origin and territorial range of mitochondrial subhaplogroups H5a2, H5e1a, H5u1, U4a2, U5a2a and U5a2b1 observed in central and eastern European populations indicate that some of the maternal ancestors of today's Slavs (Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Ukrainians and Russians) inhabited areas of Central and Eastern Europe much earlier than it was estimated on the basis of archaeological and historical data. Indeed, we show here the existence of genetic continuity of several maternal lineages in Central Europe from the times of Bronze and Iron Ages. Thus, the data from complete mitochondrial genomes collected so far seems to indicate that the ancestors of Slavs were autochthonous peoples of Central and Eastern Europe rather than early medieval invaders emerging in restricted areas of the Prut and Dniestr basin and expanding suddenly due to migration, as suggested by some archeologists [9]. In this respect, the complete genome data on several mitochondrial subhaplogroups of probable Central European origin presented in this and previous studies [51], [52] are in a perfect agreement with the recent findings of physical anthropology, suggesting continuity of human settlement in central Europe between the Roman period and the early Middle Ages [11] as well as with earlier anthropological data pointing to the central Europe as the “homeland” of Slavs [54].”The researchers go on to assert that,“Taken together, this data points to a genetic continuity of several maternal lineages in Central Europe from the times of Bronze and Iron Ages. Interestingly, this picture could be also confirmed by expansion time of Y-chromosome subcluster R1a1a1-M458 [51]. Thus, one may exclude the migrationist assumption that Central European territories were populated by the Slavs only at the very beginning of sixth century, following whole scale depopulation of the northern areas of Central Europe [1]. Indeed, the data presented herein indicates that visible changes of material culture of Central Europe in the fifth century did not result from extensive demographic changes, but were rather accompanied by continuity of some maternal and paternal lineages between Bronze and early Middle Ages.”This study had major implications as it turns assumptions about Slavic and Northern European demographic history on their heads. In our search for a Slavic homeland, it seems that we have been slightly narrow minded. The ancestry of modern Slavs can be clearly traced to ancient lineages existing in Central Europe since the earliest Indo European migrations. Proto Slavs were inhabiting the lands of Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Czechia hundreds of years before the alleged mass migrations. The Slavs did not emerge from mass migrations of tribes originating in any one place in eastern Europe, but rather represent an ancient Central-East European population that covered a wide expanse of territory.Of course, whether or not these people spoke a proto Balto Slavic language, had a unified culture, or group identity is not divulged in the genome. It is here that we need historians and archeologists.Another study, also published in Plos Journal, supported this conclusion and provided interesting insights regarding the interconnectedness of modern Baltic and Slavic populations. All Balto Slavic nations were included in this study. This study concluded that Poles, Belarusians, Ukrainians and Southern/Central Russians share high levels of genetic continuity and kinship. Czechs and Slovaks are also similar to other North Slavs, but are more removed due to Germanic admixture, and are therefore shifted to Western Europeans. Northern Russians are the most atypical North Slavs, and cluster closely with non Slavic Finns and Estonians.“Compared to the East Slavs, the West Slavs are more differentiated. In particular, Czechs (Fig 2A and 2B) and to a lesser extent also Slovaks (Fig 2A), are shifted towards Germans and other West Europeans, whereas Poles either overlap or lie close to East Slavs. Likewise, population pairwise genetic distances are as twice as high for West Slavs as for East Slavs (DNei= 0.241 for NRY; FST = 0.0014) (Tables A,B in S1 File). Notably, genetic distances remain low after adding Poles to the Belarusians, Ukrainians and Russians from the central-southern regions (DNei= 0.144 for NRY; FST = 0.0006 for autosomal data), indicating thereby an extended geographic area with low genetic differentiation among the majority of Slavic speakers across Central-East Europe.”“In contrast, Russians from the northern region of the European part of Russia are differentiated from the rest of the East Slavs, and on genetic plots lie in the vicinity of their Finnic-speaking geographic neighbors. Accordingly, the average genetic distances between North Russians and the rest of East Slavic populations are high.”And the study also gives us interesting revelations concerning the South Slavic peoples.“Most South Slavs are separated from the rest of the Balto-Slavic populations and form a sparse group of populations with internal differentiation into western (Slovenians, Croatians and Bosnians) and eastern (Macedonians and Bulgarians) regions of the Balkan Peninsula with Serbians placed in-between (Fig 2A and 2B). The mean population pairwise genetic distances for South Slavs (DNei = 0.239 for NRY; FST= 0.0009 for autosomal data) (Tables A,B in S1 File) are comparable or higher to the ones for East Slavs despite the smaller region within the Balkan Peninsula that they occupy. Furthermore, Slovenians lie close to the non-Slavic-speaking Hungarians, whereas eastern South Slavs group is located together with non-Slavic-speaking but geographically neighboring Romanians and, to some extent, with Greeks.”So according to this study, there is a significant genetic boundary separating South Slavs from West and East Slavs. There is also high levels of genetic diversity amongst South Slavs themselves, standing in contrast to the relative harmony existing between West and East Slavic groups (despite the genetic divide between Poland and Czechia and Northern Russians with the rest of North Slavs). Also interesting is a short reference to the Baltic Lithuanians and Latvians.“Both extant Baltic-speaking populations, Latvians and Lithuanians, lie in the vicinity of Finno-Ugric-speaking Estonians according to their Y-chromosome diversity (Fig 2B), whilst in their autosomal variation they are slightly shifted towards the group of East Slavic speakers (Fig 2A). Also, one finds Volga-Finnic Mordvins close to the two Baltic-speaking populations (Fig 2A), potentially reflecting historic evidence that the Baltic-speaking tribes’ spread zone formerly reached more eastward parts of the East European Plain [49,50].”So Baltic speakers are influenced by Finno Ugric Estonians, but also cluster closely with the eastern Slavs (in particular, Belarusians). Interestingly, there are similarities between current Balts and Finnic speaking populations of the Volga, demonstrating the once expansive range covered by Baltic speakers. I will get back to the Balts later. The researchers conclude their article by asserting that there exists two general ancestral substratums in modern Slavic populations.“The results of our study have shown the close genetic proximity of the majority of West and East Slavic populations inhabiting the geographic area from Poland in the west, to the Volga River in the East (Fig 2A and 2B, Tables A,B in S1 File). Some mtDNA haplotypes of hgs H5, H6, U4a were more frequent in the genomes of West and East Slavic speakers, providing thereby further evidence for the matrilineal unity of West and East Slavs [28,36] as well as continuity of mtDNA diversity in the territory of modern Poland for at least two millennia [38].In contrast to this apparent genetic homogeneity of the majority of West and East Slavs, the gene pool of South Slavs, who are confined to the geographically smaller Balkan Peninsula, differs substantially and shows internal differentiation, as testified by their NRY and autosomal variation (Fig 2A and 2B; Fig 3, Tables A,B in S1 File). Consequently, we suggest that there is a “central-east European” genetic substratum in West and East Slavs, exemplified by NRY hgs R1a and the k3 ancestry component, and a “south-east European” one, featuring NRY hgs I2a and E plus the k2 ancestry component for South Slavs (Fig 2A and 2B, Fig 3, Table K in S1 File; Tables A,B in S1 File). Notably, the “south-east European” component does not extend to the whole Balkan Peninsula, as South Slavs are differentiated from Greek sub-populations except Macedonian Greeks (Fig 2A, Fig 4B) [55].”So, what do we make of these results? We will attempt to reconstruct what may be supported by the genetic evidence. The Slavs could have emerged from Indo European populations that lived in Central Europe since before the Bronze age, whose ancestors entered the region during the Kurgan invasions from the Pontic steppes between 2,500 and 1,000 BC, contributing to the distribution of the y haplogroup R1A1.The Lusatian culture (1,300 to 500 BC), that covered the Bronze age and parts of the early Iron age, could have represented these early Central Europeans. At this time, we cannot pretend to know what language they spoke or what cultural identity they had.In later centuries, these peoples would have faced mixture and domination from various people groups, most notably Germanic tribes in Poland and Indo Iranians in the Ukrainian steppes. In Poland, Scandinavian migrants would have formed tribal coalitions like the Goths and Vandals, bringing Germanic material culture to the region without replacing the indigenous inhabitants. Some of these tribes, like the Vandals, could have intermixed with local populations, explaining their genetic similarities to modern day Poles.Within this region of ethnic mixture and cultural diffusion, the proto Slavs begin to make a linguistic split from proto Baltic. Most probably this is happening in West Ukraine and parts of eastern Poland just north of the Carpathians. Possible candidates for this group of people could be the Venedi, mentioned by Tacitus. Now we will fast forward to 400 AD. Germanic tribes begin leaving Eastern and Central Europe for the west and south in the wake of Hun invasions. Meanwhile, proto Slavic groups are gaining social cohesion and strength. Small scale migrations along the Carpathians are bolstered by indigenous non-Germanic Central European kindred who stood behind and were receptive to cultural change, thus explaining the rapid ascension of Slavic culture and language in Poland, Czechia and Eastern Germany over such a short period.Modern genetic harmony between Poles and East Slavs (Belarusians, Ukrainians, South/Central Russians) suggests that these populations descend from the Balto-Slavic, Central North Eastern European core, which implies that this vast region is the proto Slavic homeland.Genetic divergences within the Slavic family demonstrate areas where Slavs intermixed with non proto Slavic populations during their expansion across Europe. Czechia and to a lesser extent Slovakia are good examples of a place where Slavs would have intermixed with strong Germanic and Celtic elements, thus positioning them towards Western Europeans (though they also show great similarity with other North Slavs). The Baltic and Finno Ugric elements in east Slavs also demonstrate Slavic expansion into non Slavic populated areas, as Slavs conquered and assimilated Balts and Finns (Balts in Belarus and parts of Russia, Finns in Northern Russia). The genetic distance displayed by Northern Russians in relations to other East Slavs is explained by a Slavicization of a majority Finno Ugric population in the region.Balts (non Slavs, though distant relatives) would also go through some major demographic shifts during the migration period. Eastern Balts, pressured by Slavic expansion, would migrate from Belarus and Russia as far as the Volga to the modern Baltic region, forming the basis for the Lithuanians and Latvians. Genetic similarities between Volga Finns (Mordvians) and modern Balts demonstrates ancient ties between the two groups, and former Baltic presence far to the east. The gap between the North and South Slavs is the greatest example of differietation between the North Central European Slavic homeland and the lands that Slavs conquered and Slavicized. In the 6th and 7th centuries, Slavic speakers began to spread from modern Poland and Ukraine in small groups into the Balkans, gradually forming large tribal units that would pose a severe nuisance to the eastern Romans. These migrants would not comprise the majority of these tribes. The social and political openness and freedom that was displayed by early Slavs (according to Roman writers), could have made it attractive for Balkan Dacians, Illyrians and Thracians to accept Slavic culture and language. Dacians and Thracians did not die, but are instead now speaking in a Slavic language and contain a moderate North East European component. This also explains why many South Slavs get higher Balkan results (50-70%) than East European “Slavic” results (10%-30%) in some DNA testing services. So in conclusion, the homeland of the original proto Slavic people lies in North Central and Eastern Europe, including the lands of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus, possibly all the way to modern day Central and Southern Russia. While we cannot posit that the ancient peoples in those lands identified as Slavs, had one culture, and spoke a uniform language, we can assert that they are the ancestors of modern North Slavs through shared lineages with modern populations. Indeed, modern Slavs are probably descendents of many diverse people groups who happened to share similar genetic origins from the ancient past.Likewise, we can see a clear divide between proto Slavic areas of influence, and areas where the proto Slavic genetic continium was less prevalent, such as North Russia and the Balkans. Here are the articles if you want to do further reading for yourself. The History of Slavs Inferred from Complete Mitochondrial Genome SequencesGenetic Heritage of the Balto-Slavic Speaking Populations: A Synthesis of Autosomal, Mitochondrial and Y-Chromosomal DataAnd since I'm in a good mood, some cool Slavic stuff;)

What are some instances of hypocrisy you've faced or witnessed?

I am sure I am going to get lots of bashing for this.If you are a blind feminist and do not see the world practically and logically, please do not read this answer.Ok, if you are here, you can go on reading further.Back in 2014, I met a girl on Shaadi, com. I saw her profile and I was interested to know more about her. I sent my interest and she accepted after 3–4 days. We started chatting and eventually exchanged the numbers and chatted some more for a week and then we met.2 meetings down and our parents decided to meet for a small gathering, nothing official. At this point of time, her father disclosed that even though the shaadi.com profile says she is single, she is actually married and now divorce procedure is going on. Therefore, they were legally separated. He said he wished her daughter should have another chance in life and therefore he is searching for a good guy for her.One of her eldest uncles, aged 83 at that time, raised a concern if I, unmarried, should a marry a divorced person. To this, me and my parents along with few close relatives, thought that this sad event can happen to anyone and that person should not be discriminated. Its not end of the world for them. Its not a law that a divorced person can only marry someone who is divorced, immaterial of their gender. This could happen to anyone, you, me, her, him, anyone. This day I knew how not only my parents, which they always were, but even my relatives were very modern minded. We proceeded further and decided that we should date each other first before being engaged. We then went on 4 dates in a period of 10 days. That’s it. We called it off later. What happened? Why did we called to off?During the 4th date, we were discussing if we had any relationships in the past. I was the first one to answer. I said what the truth was. I said, I had 2 relationships in the past but things didn’t work out. The first girl married some NRI and ditched me and I broke up with the the other girl back in 2011 after 1 year of relationship as it was not working out for both of us.A week after 4th date, her parents called my parents to meet. In this meeting, her father said that not only he but even his daughter herself do not approve of this relationship. My parents agreed to it as it is of no use to have a forced relationship. Out of curiosity, my parents the reason for this to which her father replied, “Your son had 2 relationships in the past. we do not want our daughter to marry someone who was in a relationship in the past. Person is not of a good character if he is in a love relationship.”Next day morning, me and my parents were having breakfast happily. Now your question, the biggest hypocrisy, anyone in the world witnesses is when people show how big and open their mind is from outside, but from inside its filled full of sh*t. We, as humans, have an habit to support, agree and enforce views and thoughts only when they are our own.P.S: Did you actually think I was going to showcase that that the biggest hypocrisy I witnessed was when a separated said girl refused to marry me because I was just in a relationship in the past? Sorry to disappoint you people.
