The largest number I’ve ever written for a single student was fourteen letters—six for graduate school applications, four for scholarship applications, and four for job interviews. (That was spaced out over two years, if I recall correctly.)Generally, though, if you know you are going to ask for multiple recommendations, let the teacher know that.That way, she or he can create a single template letter for all of them, save it to the computer, and then do minor changes to customize the letter for each job application or scholarship application. It doesn’t take much extra time to adapt a letter for a different audience once the teacher has the first one written.Finally, if teachers go to that much trouble for you, be nice to them. Send them a thank-you card, bribe them with their favorite chocolate, and send them an occasional email or letter to let them know how your career is going. Something that shows you have reflected deeply about your past achievements, your strengths and what you can offer to our society in the future.Based on my professional experiences, I estimate that around 1% of people go to this effort when applying for a scholarship. I also estimate that around 1% of scholarship applicants are successful.It may take many days to prepare one very strong scholarship application. Once you do this, you can tweak each application in a matter of (around) 30 minutes per application by changing the names, dates and scholarship references. You should avoid sending out a generic application, in my opinion.The best advice that I can give is that applying for a very small number of scholarships that are a very strong match to your CV will likely be more successful than copying and pasting a generic application to a very large number of scholarship providers. This might seem counter-intuitive. However, I am convinced that randomness doesn’t work in what is a hyper competitive market, that is anything but easy. If you do just some of the tips above, I do believe that will automatically put you in top 10% of scholarship applicants. Hand written is more realistic and even though with the best hand writing people may have difficulties to understand it better and is less formal. Use a good template and type the letter.TYPE for sure is easily understandable and formal
