Which requires more training EMT or paramedic?

Let me try and explain each level of the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) career field, for those that are unaware. This pertains to the US and its states and territories. Although some states use different terminology and have additional certifications — these are nationally recognized terms.Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)The Emergency Medical Responder’s scope of practice includes simple skills focused on lifesaving interventions for critical patients. Typically, the EMR renders basic on-scene emergency care, comfort, and scene control while awaiting additional EMS response and may serve as part of the transporting crew, but not as the primary caregiver. The major difference between the layperson and the EMR is the “duty to act” as part of an organized EMS response. The Emergency Medical Responder course is normally 56-hours. LE, FF, Students 16 years of age and older can attend this course.Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)The Emergency Medical Technicians’ scope of practice includes basic life support and traumatic emergencies. Emergency care is based on assessment findings. Additionally, EMTs provide care to minimize secondary injury and provide comfort to the patient and family while transporting the patient to an acute care facility (ER or Trauma Center). The EMT serves as part of the EMS response system, assuring a progressive increase in the level of assessment and care. Many Firefighters (FF), Police (LE), and all Ambulance Services personnel have EMT certification. In addition to emergency response, Ambulance Service EMTs often perform medical transport services of patients requiring care within their scope of practice (home to hospital, hospital to hospital transfers, and care facilities to a hospital). The EMT is required to attend no less than 120–150 hours of training.Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)In many communities, AEMTs provide an option to provide beneficial, lower risk advanced skills for systems that cannot support or justify Paramedic level care. This is frequently the case in rural and volunteer systems. In some jurisdictions, AEMTs are the highest level of pre-hospital emergency and other care. In communities that utilize emergency medical dispatch systems, AEMTs may function as part of a tiered response system. In all cases, AEMTs work alongside other EMS and allied health care professionals as an integral part of the emergency care team. The AEMT’s knowledge, skills, and abilities are acquired through formal education and training. The AEMT possesses the knowledge associated with and is expected to be competent in all of the skills of the EMR and EMT. The major difference between the AEMT and the EMT is the ability to perform limited advanced skills and provide pharmacological interventions to emergency patients. The AEMT course consists of no less than 168 hours of classroom time that includes hands-on skills training sessions. The students are scheduled to complete a clinical internship rotation consisting of two, 12-hour shifts in the emergency room where they will observe and assist with the assessment and management of patients within the scope of practice for the AEMT. The student is also required to complete three, 12-hour shifts in the prehospital setting with an EMS agency. Students are required to demonstrate the ability to assess and manage a minimum of 10 patients and document the care.Paramedic (EMT-P)The Paramedic’s scope of practice includes basic and advanced skills specifically focused on the acute management and transportation of a broad range of patients. The Paramedic possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities developed through formal education and training in both the clinical and field settings. The Paramedic has the knowledge associated with and is expected to be competent in all of the skills of the EMR, EMT, and AEMT. The major difference between the Paramedic and the AEMT is the ability to perform a broader range of advanced skills. These skills carry greater risk for the patient if improperly or inappropriately performed, are more difficult to attain and maintain competency in, and require significant background knowledge in basic and applied sciences. The course length is typically 1200–1800 hours and consists of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).Each of the above levels of EMS Personnel requires additional CME (continuing education) credits to stay current and recertify their licensures and/or certifications. Here is a chart showing the simple breadth and depth of each level of EMT during the initial assessment of a patient for some clarity in education and scope of practice.

What is the difference between an EMT and an EMR?

EMR is Emergency Medical Responder and EMT is Emergency Medical Technician. What is involved may vary greatly between jurisdictions. The difference is in the amount of training and skill sets. Where I live EMR is generally about 120 to 140 hours of training. We do not have EMT, our next level is Primary Care Paramedic and that is 2 full years in college. It’s going up to 3 years around 2022.

I like that basically all you need to do is read over the contract and sign it. It couldn't be easier, and then you have a record of what you have signed for legal purposes.
