PDF Editor FAQ

When you were a child, did your parents urge you to empty your plate at meal times, remembering that there were children in the world who were hungry?

No, because I had four siblings and Mom made just enough for each to have a fair portion. If you didn’t want it, that’s OK, that means there's more for your brothers and sisters to have second helpings. But no alternative meal was available. On the occasion that a dessert was provided, it was only available to those who finished their entree.Dad was in the military overseas and pay allotments came once a month (I think). Mom had to budget carefully so that groceries didn’t run out before the next allotment. She must have done a great job, since no one was fat, no one was skinny, and we all “liked” a wide variety of foods!

Will landlords look at you favorably if you pay your rent before it’s due?

Absolutely!! Tenants who set up direct deposit or pay allotment accounts are like GOLD. Do everything you can to keep them HAPPY! Having to make multiple trips to collect the rent, and listen to tired excuses as to why it is late again is a burden.

Did most husbands (as seen in movies and sitcoms in this era) in the 1950s and 60s hand over their paychecks to their wives every payday?

Yes. No. And maybe. As usual.Movies are always fantasy but they reflect reality. I was born in 1948 so was a kid in the 50’s and early 60s.“Paychecks “ in America were usually cash in an envelope in the 50s. And often weekly. Some men gave their wives a set amount every week. Some women never knew how much their husbands made. The movie trope of a woman begging her husband for money for milk for the baby was real. At times. (And still is. At times) Some men kept a set amount for themselves and gave the rest to their wives. Women were often in charge of paying the various bills and making sure there was enough for food.My Dad and Mom had a checking account quite early, and his Navy pay went into the account. Mom handled the finances, Dad was often out to sea. But they always communicated and both knew how much was coming in and going out.As pay systems got more sophisticated Dad had most of his pay allotted to the joint checking account and kept a small amount for pocket money. Very small amount. A friend of my mom’s once asked how she was sure Dad wasn’t partying all the time overseas. Mom pointed out that with the amount of money he had it would be unlikely for him to have a gal in one port, much less “every port”.Family finances were as complicated then as now. There was, and is, no normal. There are just a lot of ways people make things work.

Comments from Our Customers

US Legal was easy to use, did everything it promised to do, and really did supply me with a FREE legal form. I experienced no layers of processing that led to any hidden fees, and the forms are state-specific. I couldn't be happier.
