That was the caliber of the man.[1][1][1][1]When the others set out to enjoy the dawn of Freedom, Sardar Patel set out to a daunting task of unifying India.565 Princely states, 565 aspirations to be the ‘Ruler’ and all these sided their aspirations in front of this man. That was the respect he commanded.Those who didn’t, Sardar Patel made them bow to him.Sardar Patel handled 565 states and a man (not to be named) handled one state: Kashmir.The rest of India is united and Kashmir is still bleeding with a part of it in hands of Pakistan.Sardar Patel didn’t believe in half measures. He believed in settling the matter for once and all.As he had said to Sir Thomas Elmhirst, Commander-in-Chief, Indian Air Force: “If all the decisions rested on me, I would be in favor of a full-scale war with Pakistan. Let us get it over once and for all.”I will not even go in his contribution to India’s Freedom Struggle.Will share an incident:When the plague broke out in Ahmedabad in 1917, hundreds were dead but one man was out in streets with a broom in his hands working round the clock with his volunteers to clean the city at a great risk to his own health. He worked almost round the clock at a great risk to help the victims and their families. This strain broke Patel’s robust health but sealed his reputation as a mass leader.Patel was a true mass leader. He commanded such respect and love, and confidence of people in him was such that after the general elections of 1947, 12 out of 15 Congress regional committees voted him to be the Prime Minister of India. Though he withdrew his candidature at the insistence of Gandhi Ji.Patel sealed 565 potential bleeding points in less than a year or India would have been busy in sewing itself in initial decades of independence.Patel is not overrated but he is highly underrated.
