PDF Editor FAQ

Why haven't the media stations lost their FCC licenses for being biased towards one party?

The FCC has released a statement on this on their website,[1][1][1][1] which I quote below (emphasis mine). The tldr; version is that they will only intervene if they have documented proof that the newscasters knew the story was false when broadcast. This appears to be higher than the actual malice standard in a libel lawsuit, which also allows for a claim for reckless disregard for the truth. The FCC receives a wide variety of comments and complaints from consumers about whether networks give inaccurate or one-sided news presentations, fail to cover certain events or cover them adequately, overemphasize or dramatize certain aspects of news events. The FCC's authority to respond to these complaints is narrow in scope and the Commission is prohibited by law from engaging in censorship or infringing on First Amendment rights of the press. What can the FCC do?The FCC cannot interfere with a broadcaster's selection and presentation of material for the news and/or its commentary. However, the FCC does regulate content in some narrow areas. Federal law prohibits or limits the broadcast of obscene, indecent or profane language as defined by U.S. courts. Also, the FCC may issue penalties for knowingly broadcasting false information. What responsibilities do broadcasters have?As public trustees, broadcasters may not intentionally distort the news. The FCC has stated publicly that "rigging or slanting the news is a most heinous act against the public interest." The FCC may act to protect the public interest when it has received documented evidence, such as testimony from persons who have direct personal knowledge of an intentional falsification of the news. Without such documented evidence, the FCC generally cannot intervene.Footnotes[1] Complaints About Broadcast Journalism[1] Complaints About Broadcast Journalism[1] Complaints About Broadcast Journalism[1] Complaints About Broadcast Journalism

Can you give me specific examples of "fake news" by the mainstream media? Not generalized complaints about news coverage but stories that were later proven to be intentionally made up.

Has Medical Science been able to prove that there is a actual benefit to using Cannibis also called Medical marijuana?

Great question - I actually used your question this week in my column on Leafbuyer to help others understand why there’s not more talk about the research into cannabis as a medicinal herb. I can go into much more detail there than I can in a quick Quora answer and I can provide more links and references. :)There is a TON of research on the cannabis plant and a ton of positive research involving the Endocannabinoid System and the potential it has to mitigate disease. You’ll see in my article, there are thousands of published, documented, peer-reviewed studies on the medical efficacy of cannabis.I spoke with Dr. Jeffery Chen, the head of UCLA’s Cannabis Research Division a few months ago and he referenced a study where the results suggested that learning to manipulate the Endocannabinoid System through cannabinoid supplementation could mitigate ALL human disease. Not some, not just certain diseases, but ALL human disease. The potential is there - but the US needs to loosen the regulations around cannabis research to expand the research further. While we do have free speech - the government tries to protect the general public from hearing things which may violate innocence. Unfortunately, because cannabis is still a Schedule 1 substance, the FCC prevents mainstream media from discussing it in too much detail, in their ‘rulebook’ discussing cannabis use openly is no different than promoting heroin use.In fact, after the 2015 VMA’s on MTV - the FCC received a number of complaints about the network promoting marijuana use and the FCC answered by saying MTV can do what it wants because it is a subscription service. Only public media outlets are subjected to stringent FCC rules. The good news is - despite the limitations on research in the United States, other countries have been going gangbusters on cannabis research since the late 80’s. Israel is leading the way, but European countries and Canada are also way ahead of the US.So unless you’re doing own reading and research (and making a point to find international studies), you’re likely not going to hear anything about cannabis research in the news until our lawmakers reschedule the plant. But as a writer who’s studied cannabis full-time for nearly three years, I can tell beyond the shadow of a doubt, - there is a TON of research, you just have to be willing to do the legwork to find it because the US Government doesn’t want you to… ;)
