We received a call to a local bar for a disturbance during the NCAA national championship football game. The place was packed. A customer apparently was rude to a waitress and management wanted him removed. Upon arrival a co-worker (I'll refer to as Dave) arrived as my backup. After talking to everyone, management decided to allow the customer to stay. I turned around to leave to find Dave arguing with another customer. Suddenly Dave starts chucking this guy across the room and across a table. The entire time, the customer had his hands raised yelling “I'm not resisting!” Dave puts this guy in handcuffs and starts dragging him out of the bar to his cruiser.At the cruiser, I attempt to determine what offense the guy committed only to find there was none. I tell Dave to release the guy and he does.At shift change, I report what happened to management and an internal investigation was opened. The entire incident was caught on the bar's security video. In the end, Dave was cleared of any wrong doing. Dave was later caught altering prescriptions and resigned. He was never charged and became Chief of a small town department. A few years later, he is fired for again altering prescriptions as well as stealing from the departments K9 fund. He was sentenced to a drug treatment program.**** UPDATE ****While on probation, and after being released from the drug program, Dave tested positive for several drugs and was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

You should try to keep up with at least the security updates. For general program updates it's up to you, though I'd recommend it. If you omit those two you might find that at best you miss out on some nifty new features, at worst (though still very unlikely) you could find yourself the victim of some virus / spyware / etc.Upgrading the entire system should not be a big worry at all. Your LTS version will get security updates for the next 4 years. By that time you'll most probably have upgraded your entire computer anyway. It's only if you really want to or need to have the latest and greatest new developments that I'd suggest going for 14.10 - which has a 6 month upgrade cycle.
