Having lived in Amsterdam for 20 years i’ll give you some typical Amsterdam themed problems…Having to explain again and again to various visiting friends, colleagues from other countries and occasionally various ill informed tourists that….No, not everyone smokes weed or visits hookers on a regular basis, most of us have no idea which are the ‘best places to go’ or know when you are or are not being ‘ripped off’That there is a difference between something being legal, and something been decriminalised or not aggressively policed.No, you can't just smoke weed anywhere you feel like.No, most of the ‘girls’ that work in the Red Light District windows don't do it because they’re extremely sexually liberated and really enjoy their work… They have the same sad stories of exploitation as hookers do all over the World.Bikes really are used as a fast form of transport around the city, we’re not all on some kind of mass casual laid back recreational bike ride. *Do Not* cycle right in the middle of the cycle path at a snails pace and expect it is not going to piss people off…The sound of a ringing bicycle bell is not a cheery Amsterdam ‘Hello’ it's a get ‘Get out of the fucking way!!’There is no ‘good time’ to visit The Anne Frank House…. regardless of time of year or time of day the queue is always a minimum of a 100m.If you try and cycle across a tram track at a shallow angle your bicycle wheels *will* get caught in the tram rails. It's at the least very humiliating, and in the worst case extremely dangerous…. Have your front wheel at an angle of at least 45 degrees to the tram rails..I could go on…. But, i’ll limit myself to one more, especially for any potential American visitors to A’dam, who in my experience are the main transgressors when it comes to this particular ‘Amsterdam problem’.Yes, we’ve all seen Pulp Fiction, And yes, we know the bit where they discuss what a Quarter Pounder is called in Europe. Just because you’ve had a couple of beers and found your way to a late night hamburger joint it is really, really, not necessary* to act out the entire scene from the film, speaking every line verbatim…. Please No!! The film is over 20 years old already, we’ve all heard it so many, many times before. You being drunk doesn't make your sudden recollection of this film any more funny than the dozen other times we’ve heard it…...

For recreational biking and kids will ride bikes to school but cars and trucks are the main mode of transportation. In Saskatchewan kids are driving grain trucks at 12 years old.

Another alternative to cleated shoes and “clip-in” pedals (also confusing called “clipless”) is Power Grips: Power Grips Power Grips - Original . I use clip-in pedals on my recreational bikes, but on my commuter bike I use power grips so that I can wear normal “business” shoes. I find them both easier to use and more effective than toe clips. They aren’t quite as efficient as clip-in pedals, but pretty close.
