PDF Editor FAQ

If you were going to create a new model for a startup accelerator, what would you do, how would you do it, and why?

I have, in fact, created a new model for a startup accelerator and am looking for partners to join me on the grand adventure of launching it this year to the general public. Join me if you want or watch from the sidelines as the entire startup industry gets disrupted.Okay that sounds a bit grandiose, and perhaps it is, but it is based on an idea virus that once it starts to gain publicity and traction will change the world just as the franchise and chain store model has.In fact it is just the franchise model with a couple of slight twists and it is those twists that give this new startup accelerator model enormous power and leverage.Franchise The Systems Regardless Of The ContentConsider the fact that every business regardless of its size, age or industry has the same basic infrastructure needs: product development, marketing, sales, operations, human resources, legal, accounting, finance, technology, information, management, etc. There are proven best practices, systems, and processes in each of these areas that just work regardless of what company uses them or where they are in the world.Franchise and chain store operations have already figured this out, and simply apply their proven systems in a new location to get results within an expected range. The good ones can expand quickly and effectively because they have done enough of their due diligence homework to forecast with a high degree of accuracy how the various factors for their success will play out within the community of the new location. They come in with their needed systems, policies, and procedures already figured out, adapt them to local conditions if needed, and hit the ground running. The Systems Are The SameProven franchise operations have a high degree of success because the local entrepreneur doesn't have to waste time, energy, and resources trying to figure out workable systems on their own like Mom & Pop operations do.The interesting thing is that there are a handful of systems, policies, and procedures that work and work well in the areas mentioned above. And they work regardless of what industry one is in. The companies that employ these best practices do well, those that don't, don't.That is why McDonald's looks more like SuperCuts or JiffyLube than it does the Mom & Pop restaurant across the street. All 3 of these named companies have operations manuals that clearly spell out things like proper use of their professionally designed logos, signage, uniforms, opening procedures, closing procedures, hiring, firing, training, procurement practices, etc.If one were to set these manuals side by side and begin going through them, how much would be interchangeable? My guess is that a high percentage would be close enough that you could copy, paste, and edit only slightly and most people wouldn't be able to tell which company's manual they were actually reading. For instance, do you think the signage stipulations are really going to differ all that much? Okay, they might talk about different dimensions, or colors, or materials, but the core essence of what they will be defining will be the same. They will be talking about acceptable colors: red and yellow for McDonald's (and certain shades of red and yellow at that), blue and orange for SuperCuts. And while the colors specified are different, the fact that colors are specified is the same. So you could essentially take the page out of one manual, change the colors specified, and insert it into the other manual and probably only those who created, or really study the manual closely would even notice, and they might think it was just an updated version. What does this all have to do with a startup accelerator?Well, what if your accelerator organized a set of operational policies, procedures, and systems that had already been proven to work for any business of a certain type (online, retail, manufacturing, etc.) turned them into templates, and just filled in the blanks with the new company details for each new company you were accelerating?Instead of an entrepreneur having to figure out a whole new marketing system, they could simply implement your step by step plan that has already been proven to work for company after company, new product launch after new product launch.Instead of having to try to find customers based on their own recognizance, they could go through the proven systems of lead generation, appointment setting, presentation, closing, paperwork, account setup, and followup. Like with a franchise or chain store, the system would already be in place, the entrepreneur would just need to follow it.Same with accounting, finance, legal, and all the other infrastructure needs I mentioned above. The entrepreneurs would just have to have a good idea, and a target market to go after with it. You provide the operations manual and systems that they follow to start with, and they would truly be accelerated. No more time, money and other resources would be wasted trying to figure everything out from scratch. Instead their business would launch like a rocket with a very high chance of hitting the targets for which they are aiming.Rocket Powered AccelerationYou could take it a step further even, and increase their chances of success even more.If you look a little closer you will notice that with ALL of the infrastructure needs I listed (legal, marketing, sales, operations, product development, finance, management, accounting, technology, human resources, information) the real work being done is simply the processing of specialized information. The work product for everything except in a few special cases is a document of some sort. Whether that be a contract, a report, brochure, a blueprint, etc. the reality is that it is just information.True, each department has what amounts to its own language, and the information they are processing can be different or be used differently (ex. accounting uses sales data to generate revenue reports while operations uses sales data to schedule procurement and production, etc.), but it still boils down to information processing. This is great news for a startup accelerator because it means that a one-time investment in organizing these information processing systems can be leveraged across every startup that they accelerate.Provide the Team For Even Faster ResultsIt also means that they could partner with, or even start service companies which supply these specialized information processing services to all the various companies associated with the accelerator. A separate provider for each specialty. This would drastically reduce the cost of starting each company, and the time it would take before the company was profitable and sustainable. For instance, the same niche traffic generation firm could be employed to provide traffic generation services for all the companies. The traffic generation company could get quite good rather quickly at driving targeted traffic to the offers of its client companies through a specific method. This is so, because they would have an ever growing base of opportunities to test and refine their traffic generation systems and woud presumably learn from each test, then apply that learning in subsequent tests..Clients who used their services would benefit from the growing capabilities of the traffic generation firm, and the fact that the client wouldn't have to try to generate traffic on their own from scratch would free them up to concentrate on their own area of expertise.Imagine if the accelerator had all of these infrastructure supplying companies already lined up, and the systems in place so that when an entrepreneur walked in with an idea, they could walk out with the business already setup and operational, with themselves scheduled to attend training classes in how to run their already operational business.Walk in with an idea. Walk out with a business. My accelerator, and yours if you join me, will be a place where a person can come in with nothing but an idea and a desire to make it happen, and we will have the infrastructure and team in place to turn that idea into a reality on the spot if it qualifies. The would be entrepreneur would not even need money as a portions of the profits from one business would be able to fund the next. Since almost all of the costs involved in getting a business started would already be dealt with in our automated system and existing team, the threshold for profitability would be quite low and could possibly even be reached before the first session with the entrepreneur was completed. This is not so far fetched as one might think. Considering that with the right message to the right list using modern instant communications and a direct response mechanism like a landing page with a "Buy Now" button on a web site, one could begin generating sales within the hour. As our systems and teams become ever more proficient we could expect ever bigger paydays on initial launch, and even bigger ones as we moved along the milestones map. With enough of a track record in place, investors would be coming out of the wood work to invest in our businesses, and as more and more of the processes are systematized and automated, the path to liquidity events would get shorter and smoother. The Old Spiel:No more would the entrepreneur be told:"Go find your own team.Go find all the proper players that we already know you are going to need. Get them to buy into your idea, to work with you and each other, play nice, not charge you an arm and a leg up front, and be effective from the very beginning.Oh, and while you are spinning your wheels doing that, find the funding to pay for all that stuff we know that you need, simply because every business needs it.And while you are doing that, try to get your product developed, your market identified and targeted, a compelling offer created, a sales system put in place to convert prospects into customers, and the supplier network you need once you get customers.Develop the operational procedures you need to make sure your product gets produced properly and delivered on time to ensure customer satisfaction.Run everything by legal so we don't get in trouble with anyone. Structure your entity properly (What kind of entity do you think you need by the way?)Setup the proper accounting controls to keep your finger on the pulse of your business and your stakeholders happy. And learn how to manage all of this and more in your spare time.Even though all you really had was what you though would be a good idea for a business and no clue as to how to go about doing it all. We know you can figure it out as you go along even though you really have no experience. That's okay, you can spend your time and money reinventing processes that have already been proven to work time after time.We like you. We believe in you. Rah! Rah! Rah!Here at our incubator/accelerator we'll give you office space, pats on the back, mentoring, and maybe even a secretary!Wait how come you failed to get your business off the ground?Aww, and we thought it was such a good idea too. Too bad. Well better luck next time."Instead you can tell them:"Great idea, let's test it.We have Shirley here, say 'Hi' Shirley, who is a wiz at really honing in on what a target market really wants. And Bob here... Meet Bob. Who can help us develop just the right product to test with that market and get us going right away.Meanwhile, Scott here will help us get the entity structured and setup properly. He's done this lots of times before and knows just what we need. Yes, he's a lawyer, but don't tell him that, he thinks he's one of the good guys, an entrepreneur like yourself acting as an entrepreneur himself on behalf of all our entrepreneur clients. The difference is that he just happens to have a license to practice law, which he's actually quite good at, but shh, keep it quiet or he might start thinking of himself as a lawyer and then we'd all be in trouble..I'll introduce you to the rest of the team as we go along and we'll train you in what each does and how they do it, and everything else you are going to need to lead this business to where it should go.Don't worry this is still your business. All these team members are independent contractors and can be quickly replaced if for some reason you are uncomfortable with any of them. I believe though, that you will find that each is a top notch professional and really fun and easy to work with as they all have a stake in seeing this business succeed. So you just come along and enjoy the ride as we train you to drive this amazing vehicle to wealth."Why am I telling you all this? You may be wondering why I would give away such detailed and valuable intellectual property to an anonymous poster on a public forum, especially when that poster has told me up front that they may "use" my ideas.I'm telling you and the other readers all of this for 2 reasons:1) I'm looking for more good partners to help us implement this faster, better, and on a larger scale. So if what I'm saying resonates with you, then you might decide to join me and my team as a partner or associate. We're always looking for good partners and associates. The more the merrier and the more profitable this all becomes. Contact me and I'm sure we can work something out to our mutual benefit.2) I know of several ways I and my team can profit from the work someone else does in this area, including reselling your own products and services in this arena for less than you charge and still generating a profit from it. So go ahead and implement it and I and my team may become one of your biggest customers. We'll thank you for proving the model for us, while we move on to implement the more profitable aspects of the plan.If any of this makes sense to you and you want to discuss it further, just let me know. I can be reached at ExpandoVision, Inc. and while there you can download a free copy of my book "Profit the ExpandoVision Way."Blessings on you as you implement your accelerator regardless of whether you use my ideas or not. The world needs more good entrepreneurs!

Create a Tool for Sales GenerationA website can also be an active and passive tool for generating income because it is the termination or exit point in the sales funnel. It is very difficult to convert sales in social media. There are no available mechanisms to complete the transaction on- the- spot. An e-commerce website for example, has a checkout counter where goods and services can be paid for right away.It can also be a good source for passive income via PPC or Pay- Per- Click advertising. Advertisers will pay you every time a user clicks through their ad in your website.8. Showcase Your WorkengraveandframeHere’s a valuable tip for those who want a clear advantage in the job market:Open a personal website and include a page that showcases your body of work. That is one valuable tip that Hiring Managers all over the country wish job applicants knew. The same can be said for small business owners. A website will give you the venue to present samples of your work.If you’re offering interior design services, content writing, professional web design services and other types of work that can be made visual, a portfolio page will encourage more clients to try you out.If you want to increase the impact of your portfolio page, include 5 or more client testimonies. You can put the client testimonies in the Home page which is where users land after clicking unto your link or the Services page.9. Keep Track of Your Business in Real TimeOne of the most significant benefits of having a website for a small business is that you can keep track of its performance in real time through the use of analytics.Analytics will provide you valuable data on how your business has been moving within a period of time. Key indicators of business performance include the following metrics:Number of visitors going to your website.Number of “unique visitors” or those who visit your website only once.Page views or impressions tell how many times a page has been read or visited. This will give you an idea on which type of content visitors find interesting.Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who leave your website without exploring past the page they landed on.Average time on site will show how long visitors view your content. The longer the average time on site, the better for your website.10. Professionalize Your BrandMany small business owners make the mistake of not working on their brand until they gain traction. You have to start working on your brand before launching your business. The brand gives your business its identity and makes it easier for customers and clients to understand what it is all about. The website is the most effective and efficient way to build and professionalize your brand:It places your branded value proposition front and center in the Home page.Website optimization techniques can help Internet users find your brand. It can be distributed seamlessly through various online channels.A professionally made website shows you are serious about your business.11. Expand Market Reach And CoverageIf you have a school, having a website will expand your market reach and coverage. You can offer online courses in specialized subjects to people outside your jurisdiction. For example, you are planning to introduce a school for Business Leadership training. You can create modules that can be uploaded on your website. People who sign up for your courses, will be able to access the modules and undergo online learning. Now let’s take it a notch higher by introducing a Learning Management System (LMS).An LMS is a digital platform that allows you to replicate conditions for face-to-face instruction. There are LMS platforms that have features for virtual classrooms. In addition to modules-based learning, you can provide classroom-style instruction or one-on-one consultation. The courses can be accessed by anyone with Internet service. If you live in Los Angeles, someone from Europe or Asia who is interested in your program can sign up.12. Provide Contingencies for Your Brick-and-Mortar BusinessIf there’s anything that can be learned from the Covid-19 global pandemic is the importance of having a website for your brick and mortar business. The massive spread of Covid-19 necessitated governments worldwide to impose community lockdowns in their respective countries. Businesses came to a standstill – except those that have websites.Businesses with a website were able to run a telecommuting program whereby employees work from home. An employee can log into a built-in portal where they can sign-in, retrieve the day’s assignments, and upload completed work.Customers can also use the website to contact you via email or chat support. In case they have issues with your products, customers will have a platform to air their concerns.Definitely, this will do wonders for your brand reputation! With a coronavirus vaccine still under the early stages of development, there are fears intermittent lockdowns will be imposed.Protect yourself from Covid-19 by staying home but protect your business by having a website. With a website, it will always be “Business as Usual”.13. All-In-One Business HubThe website has evolved by leaps and bounds since its early beginnings when it was used primarily as an Internet-based marketing brochure.Today’s websites are more advanced and equipped with features that can turn it into an all-in-one business hub. What can you do with your business website?Provide a showroom for your productsFinalize sales transactions through various modes of paymentReceive resumes and pre-qualify them through an Applicant Tracking System or ATSProvide social proof via testimonials and customer reviewsOrganize customer information with a built-in CRMOffer subscriptionsSell membershipsEducate your audience with blogs, e-books, modules, and training manualsGive your audience an interactive experience with the use of 360-degree images and videos.Provide customer support channels via chat, email, or built-in forms.Give clear-cut information about your business including a location map, directions, phone numbers, and email addresses.Extreme WordPress care - what types of plans we offer14. Have a Professional Email AddressWhat is more [email protected] or [email protected]?Any person who’s named “Dan” can have a [email protected] email. But only Dan; the owner of your-domain-name can have a personalized email address.Having a professional email address has the following benefits for your business:Creates better brand awarenessRepresenting your company with a free email account may be seen as a red flag for some prospectsControl the number of emails for your business. If an employee leaves, you can terminate the email.Allows you to create specific email accounts to organize business operations. For example: [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]. Keep Your Business Open 24/7Unlike a commercial establishment, the Internet doesn’t have operating hours. Your customers can find you 24/7. There are no holidays and you can “work overtime” without incurring extra costs. Thus, a website can be an effective way to improve your customer service. If you have chat support available, all you need is to hire customer service agents who can manage incoming inquiries and concerns, and have them addressed immediately to the right person or department of your company. You may want to outsource customer service to another region where time zone differentials exist. For example, a North American company can hire customer service agents from the Philippines. With the 12-hour difference, the agents can provide customer service to your clients while you are sleeping.16. Gain Valuable Insights On Your CustomersFor those who ran businesses before broadband technology became widely available, you probably depended on traditional marketing strategies to promote your products and services.Traditional marketing strategies include the use of press releases, broadsheet advertising, the use of Point-of-Purchase materials such as flyers and counter-top ads, posters, and streamers. Not only were these marketing strategies expensive, inefficient, and unsustainable but they delivered poor ROI. It’s hard to track the performance of your marketing campaign with the traditional approach. In contrast, a website will collect data on your visitors:Where do they come from? What are the demographics? Are they using mobile or desktop?Which types of content are they interested in?What is the frequency of cart abandonment?A website has built-in analytics that you can use to assess the performance of your business as well as evaluate the effectiveness of your digital marketing program.17. Stay Ahead of the CompetitionOr at the very least – keep pace with the competition. It’s not going to look good on your brand if your competition has a website and you don’t.More than branding concerns, not having a website gives you one less stream of revenue to help your business stay profitable.Go back to #15, “Keep Your Business Open 24/7”.With a website, your business can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection. Prospective customers can view your products, testimonials, and read your content before they make a decision to buy.18. Find ClientsMore accurately, your clients will find you! Some well-intentioned people may advise you that you can run a business with only social media – no website needed. That’s not true.Other than the 16 other reasons discussed above, social media marketing is not that effective for converting sales.Only 12.5% of consumers are enticed to purchase by a “Buy Button” on a social media page. In contrast, 60% of consumers reported that they were encouraged to purchase by an email. Thus, email marketing is a better strategy than social media marketing for converting interest into sales. And this “leads” us into #19…19. Generate LeadsLead generation is an important component of email marketing and your website is the best tool for capturing email addresses. When someone gives you his email address, he is giving you permission to send content to his inbox. If you ask your friends, family, and network of contacts, they will gladly give you their email addresses. What about a complete stranger? A person who just visited your website? He will not surrender his email address to anyone without getting something of value in exchange. With a website, you can offer a free monthly subscription to a newsletter, an e-book, or limited access to premium content.By doing so, you add value to your business, enhance your reputation, and most importantly, gain the trust of a potential customer.20. Open New Streams Of RevenueHow else can you earn money from your website? Aside from having a virtual store to sell your products and an Internet-based address where prospective customers can find you, here are other ways to make money from your website:Paid Ads – If your website generates an impressive amount of traffic and ranks high in the search results page, the advertisers will come knocking on your inbox!Affiliate Marketing – Promote the products and services of other businesses and earn a commission from every sale that’s generated from your website.Get Hired By Other Businesses – If your blog page has a good following, reputable websites might ask you to write for them for a generous fee.21. Manage Your Business ReputationThe website is your platform on the Internet. This is the place where you will be heard and have 100% full control over your content.Let’s say you’re the meat refining business and there are concerns about tainted meat being sold in markets and popular restaurants. You can put a disclaimer on the home page of your website and inform site visitors that your raw materials are sourced from a region that has been declared safe for consumption. You can embed an explainer video on the home page or add images of certifications from recognized organizations attesting to the safety of your meat. From there, link the home page to your social media accounts.ConclusionIf you want an effective website or one that can help you take your business to another level, you have to be prepared to invest in one. In a survey of small business owners, 19% identified cost as another reason for foregoing a website.A website is not an expense. It is an investment because you should expect a return on your money within a period of time. For your investment to pay out, you have to make sure your website is professionally designed, fully functioning with fast download speed and packed with great content.Do not penny- pinch and try to do a website on your own despite the availability of free templates. Your best option would always be to hire a professional web designer who has the experience and training to build a functional yet aesthetically beautiful website.
