I worked with RBI for 6 year joined as Grade B (DR) Officer (Manager level) and was Assistant General Manager when I quit RBI for a private job (with YES BANK). So, yes there are chances, but the chances are very rare. I got good opportunity of doing MBA from ISB Hyderabad and then job in YES BANK because of my experience and work exposure in RBI. Still, my suggestion is, if your ultimate goal is a private job, RBI is not the best place to start with, because:RBI is a central bank and has unique functions -The work that you do at RBI is not done by any other bank.Working with RBI you will be doing currency management, banking operation for other banks, inspection of banks/NBFCs, monitoring banks, foreign exchange management, public debt management, etc. None of these activities are done by other banks or private institutions. RBI’s experience can be useful for compliance job in a private bank; but many do not want to do that because it also involve some liasioning with RBI and other govt department and the career growth is limited in that.Private companies (including banks) work for profit -Working for profit is a great, and this is most important for existence and growth of the human society.But, unfortunately, many of those who work in government sector do not realize this. So there is a issue of culture. If you want to work for a profit making company the culture will be different.The discussions in private sector will be dominated around meeting targets and deadlines, growing sales, improving efficiency, reducing cost, etc. While working with RBI, you have monopoly of the services you provide and you have authority to direct banks. This cultural shift from the being a regulator to someone chasing targets and deadlines is not easy; even if you are ready for it those who do recruitment in private banks may not believe that you will be able to do it fast.Perks, benefit and comfort of RBI’s job - RBI jobs provides you excellent perks and benefits. During first 5 years of the career it will be matching with the salary package of private companies. In private jobs those who do well get promotion and salary hike fast and the pay packages of senior/top management are many time (goes to 20–100 times) to those at junior management level. Therefore, in initial 5–10 you enjoy the perks of RBI and then you become accustomed to it. After 20 years of service there is pension benefits too. Short service commission is for those who wants to have taste of Army, enjoy the combat scenarios and then they want to go back in corporate world or in their home town and grow in life. Short service commission’s aim is to provide a platform in one of the best institution in the world, groom the young lad and make him responsible to hold the leadership position. When your friends after graduation would be struggling to get handsome salary, attractive perks and privilege and sense of position and authority; short service commission will give you all of it. I will give you an example; Indian School of Business which is graded as top 20 business schools in the world ask for 5 years of managerial experience to get admission into it. Whereas in Army you straight away sit on the leadership position which is above managerial role. Therefore, if you serve 5 to 10 years in Army you will straight away get absorbed in ISB after clearing GMAT. 10 years of experience speaks allot and corporate world also crave to get Army officers on their leadership positions. So you would be having lot of avenues. Also, if you decide later that you are addictive to life of Army then you can continue if your appraisals were fine. After conversion You will rise up to Major General or Lieutenant general if you work hard throughout your career. It is said in Army that if you can command as a colonel in Army then you have lived your life, rest is just bonuses you will get.If you are clear right now that you want to serve Indian Army for minimum 20 years and enjoy pension in your 40s. Or — You want to grow up in Army or you just want to serve till 54 and retire and relax. Then Permanent commission is just for you. You need to do all the efforts what a short service commission would be doing but you won’t face seniority loss which a short service commission suffers when opt for permanent commission. You will be always one step ahead of a short service commission officer, if both of you are putting same efforts. (the scenario is when two officers one from permanent commission and other from short service commission is of parallel course). It is always a win win situation, as if you feel that you don’t want to grow or you may not grow beyond 20 years of service in Army then you can say good bye with a pension giving you a financial security with other privileges given to retirees such as medical facilities, club memberships etc and you can either relax in your 40s (which is dream of many) or just rule the world you want to excel into.Therefore, if you just say CAREER in Army then definelty permanent commission.
