I’ve been in the editorial, publishing and printing sectors for 35+ years and have worked as a book editor, magazine editor and a newspaper editor.I’ll start with the easiest to describe first:—(All images via Quora image search)NEWSPAPER EDITORThe newspaper editor is the easiest to describe, yet probably the hardest to do on a day-to-day (even night-to-night) level.News is constant; the job is constant.There are many types of newspaper editors — copyeditors, wire editors, news editors, sports editors, editorial-page editors, advertorial editors (who are not in the news department), production editors, etc. Each has its own responsibilities and working routines, let’s put it simply.My newspaper experience had been:—as a Wire Editor — to coordinate the various stories coming from the news agencies like Reuters, AP, etc, for selection by the News Editor, andas a Production Editor (the “stone sub”) — to coordinate and construct each newspaper page with the productionists (typesetters, page artists) according to the design layout of the senior management editors.In both jobs, the work happens at night (meaning overnight). The work is tremendously demanding in speed, discipline in work habits, and mental concentration:—A newspaper typically gets around 2,000 wire stories every night.It’s the Wire Editor’s job to select newsworthy stories, then coordinate and merge them together (because stories come in “takes”).The Wire Editor gets only 10–20 seconds to read (I mean read, not scan) each story.This is a job that cannot go wrong — any night, every night.It’s also a job that you cannot easily go off sick — you just have to turn up even if you’re ill and close to death, to be honest.But at the end of the day, it’s really the end of the day. You don’t worry or think about the “news” when finishing time comes and the newspaper is printed and gone out.Like most other newspaper jobs, it’s also paid badly — and even more badly in light of the amount of education and literacy that the job requires.MAGAZINE EDITORThis has its own unique difficulties.A large part of the job is planning and coordinating the work of others — in-house writers, special correspondents, freelance writers, freelance photographers and artists, and the advertisers (especially if the magazine company is a smallish one).The higher you are in the hierarchy, the more involvement in monitoring news trends and setting the issue-to-issue coverage themes. The lower you are, the more involvement in the general dogsbody work of copyediting and coordination with the writers and artists.But the magazine editor’s job is overall not terribly different from any regular office job. Work happens in the usual office hours, a lunchbreak, and you go home at the end of the day. The workhours get longer and longer as the publication date approaches, but that’s understood and accepted by everybody.By the way, you’re also paid badly.BOOK EDITORLike Robert Dixon's answer explains, book editing work is a different kind of editorial beast.I became a book editor at the super tender age of 17 (with no degree) at a major London publishing house in the late 1970s — solely on the strength of my secretarial training and English-language proficiency.Most book editors are not ‘staff’ — they are freelancers. They are contracted by the publisher to work on one book at a time — usually in the book editor’s specialism. Some book editors get a lot of contracts because they specialise in high-popularity subjects, and some get only one contract every few years if their specialism is rather too specialised.The book editor’s job is lonely and lonesome.There’s not a great deal of face-to-face interaction with anybody. The publisher (or the publisher’s secretary) is the ‘cut-out’ (intermediary) between you and the author. That’s a good arrangement too — most authors are tetchy and sensitive when seeing their work coming under the hands of the book editor.A great deal of the book editor’s work is in developmental editing (developing the storyline) and rewriting. The requirements for quality and attention to detail are very high, let’s put it that way, because mistakes can be ‘forever.’In my own case, I was lucky that mine was a salaried, in-house staff job. I was usually assigned to work on non-fiction books written by foreigners writing in English for the first time — so there was a lot of rewriting and fact-checking going on, and also because I could ‘talk’ to foreigners much better because I grew up in many different countries.The fact-checking inevitably leads to doing independent business correspondence for obtaining copyright permissions and various other legal clearances, and then coordinating those matters with the publishing house’s lawyers. This is where the secretarial training pays dividends.In contrast, my colleague sitting opposite me was in fiction. She had to deal more directly with authors in developmental editing — to get the storyline ‘right’ and sellable. I have to say I didn’t envy the kind of arguments and up-and-down relationships she had to go through with the authors.Overall, the book editor’s job means you’re constantly preoccupied with the book. Various things about the book are always on your mind when you eat, shower, sleep and even have sex. The end of the day really isn’t the end of the day.As a staff book editor, part of my job was to deal with lawyers in ‘lawyering’ the work — the lawyer inspecting the contents to ensure there are no potential legal issues arising from it. This can be extremely difficult and argumentative work, which is why it’s left to in-house people.And, yes, the job paid badly too.The upside was that I got to meet highflying and deep-swimming people like ambassadors, celebrities, etc, in various kinds of parties and social functions — opportunities that generally aren’t available to non-staff editorial people.
