This will be the case for all 3 special forces units that England, sorry, the UK possesses.Whether intending to join the SAS, SBS and SRR, those that attempt, all attempt the same course.Now the way the regiment looks at it is that you are privileged enough to be on the best special forces course in the world in the first place, with a chance to become a member of an exclusive club that no money can buy you membership of.You think you've had enough? go put your card in!The regiment is most certainly not going to get you going. If you lack the motivation you should never have turned up in Hereford in the first place.The course runs twice a year just down the road from myself at Ewas Harold and the Brecon Beacons.This is called the hills phase.The course is in fact is hard enough and the directing staff, called DS ain't there to beast the candidates at all.As the job title says, they're directing staff not drill instructors.Out of the 200 candidates the regiment takes, they will be happy to take 30 recruits who have completed just the first phase on to the second part: the jungle.In times past some years none have passed, its that tough! But you’re not shouted at all, quite the opposite, the emphasis is on you.Are you mentally strong enough? The physical bit is gruelling of course, but there's a lot more to it. If you don't want to be there you’re free to leave anytime; just tell the DS you've had it, he'll nod, won't encourage you any further. Just give him your number and he'll tell you to get on the truck and make a brew.It's all very informal and not yes sir, no sir and all that bollocks like the green army is. Rank is there, but respect must be earned regardless of rank. All of the grizzled SAS directing staff are old hands, veterans at 35+ and they really couldn't give two flying shits about any of the 200 applicants that they get twice a year, apart from their safety and even that's debatable.People do die on selection, it's no joke but the focus is on you and your ability to tough it out and you won't be hounded in the slightest. it's just not that sort of course; make no mistake, you will be assessed constantly, looking for weaknesses in your character.You may do something that isn't SOP or a mistake, a cock up and for that'll give you a gypsys kiss , a warning to buck your shit up - so do it again you'll more than likely be binned; but you won't get shouted at at all unless you've done something really stupid like punching your DS.One other thing, after you've asked your parent company (more than likely the parachute regiment or the Royal Marines), you are permitted two attempts at selection as injuries occur. To get an injury drastically reduces your chance of success, but that goes without saying. There's been cases where if another injury occurs on the second attempt exceptions have been allowed, but don't bank on it!Out of interest, my stepfather Robert “Bob” Consiglio was a RMC before being badged and sent to Iraq. He told me it took until the latter part of jungle phase of selection and he was with just three other candidates that then, and only then, the DS took an interest in him.Another consideration: You must get permission from your CO to attempt the hardest course in the world. Permission for the time off for the course at Hereford, and usually also time to train and work on fitness. Allow at least 6 months for this.Now Your parent regiment ain't going to be too impressed at you whilst you’re waiting at platform 4 having been RTU’d back to them following a screw up.Over here it's on you.You may be the fittest, the biggest and the toughest but that's not going to see you succeed, no. You need mental stamina, mental endurance, to keep pulling something out the bag, when the shit hits the fan to be able to think on your feet when hungry, maybe cold and sleep deprived. To never say die.Recruits aren't hassled or beasted, not in the sense of a Drill Instructor in their face, no.If you want to leave, leave, you asked us, we didn't ask you and it's on you to convince us and not the other way around. Stressing that it's mental toughness that will get you through the gruelling selection phases cannot be overemphasised.Around an 8% pass rate goes to show that only the elite of the British Army go on to have the time and money spent on them without being shouted at at all, to go on to be a Special Forces soldier and wear the coveted winged sword of Damocles sandy beret.
